Title: Linux Lite 2.2 Beta Released
Post by: Jerry on November 13, 2014, 12:18:40 PM
Release Announcement

Linux Lite 2.2 Beta 1 is now available for testing.

This release is the culmination of ideas and suggestions from the community that improve upon Linux Lite 2.0. We've added Backups a very simple to use backup utility, Date & Time, File Search and our newest members to the Linux Lite software family, Lite Cleaner - an easy to use point and click system cleaner and Lite Welcome - greets you on first boot, gives useful information about Linux Lite including Updates, Support and Development. There are also improvements to Install Additional Software, allowing you to choose multiple programs at once to install. There is also 'Check Install Media' that has been added to the Live boot menu and finally, we've added some community created Linux Lite themed wallpapers.

As usual, you still get the latest LibreOffice, VLC, Wine and Gimp.

New Program locations:

Backups - Menu > Accessories > Backups
File Search - Menu > Accessories > File Search
Date & Time - Menu > Settings > Date & Time
Lite Cleaner - Menu > System > Lite Cleaner

inxi (https://code.google.com/p/inxi/) has been added by request.
New adjustable size mouse theme added.
Mumble has been dropped.
Added md5sum check to right click menu.
Added libreoffice-gnome to open files on a NAS.
Launchers now use exo-open instead of xdg-open.
Fixed power settings/screensaver conflict.

Both of these iso's come in at 740mb, this means that we are no longer able to fit onto CD. After careful discussion with the community, the overall feeling was that what we offered people in terms of software and function was of greater importance than fitting on a certain media size.

Live USB/DVD/VirtualBox/Vmware: Login is automatic, no credentials required.
The image can be written to a 2gb or larger USB stick, or a writable DVD.
Alternatively, you can use the dd command: sudo dd if=linux-lite-2.2-beta1-xxbit.iso of=/dev/sdx bs=4M where 'x' is the letter of your usb stick.
In linux to find out the letter of your usb stick, open a terminal and type: df -h It is usually listed as 'media' or similar.
Please see the built in Help Manual if you require a more detailed explanation of this procedure.

There is no upgrade process from one Linux Lite version to the next because of all the in-between modifications. All Ubuntu 32bit kernels these days ship with PAE.

Recommended Hardware/Minimal System requirements:

700 MHz processor+
512 MB RAM+
5 GB of hard-drive space+
VGA capable of 1024x768 screen resolution
Either a DVD drive or a USB port for the iso

Login to the live desktop is automatic.
The first thing you MUST do after a fresh install of Linux Lite is run Menu, Favorites, Install Updates.

As this is a beta release, there are bound to be bugs etc. Please help make the final stable for other people by participating in this Beta.

Thank you.
Jerry

One way to test on legacy gear via usb and unetbootin is to make a PLOP CD and boot your usb that way.

http://www.plop.at/en/ploplinux/livecd.html

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4q3zsYCE5gA

Though I have not done this yet with Linux Lite 2.2. I will be be trying this method out later on a p4 HP A350N with 2 gig of ram with no USB boot capability in bios. it has a DVDRW it can boot from. But that would defeat the purpose of the test then. Wouldn't it?

Edit: Did the test. PLOP cd works in conjunction with a Linux Lite 2.2 USB made on a Kingston 2 gig Data traveler using Unetbootin.

Hi Jerry,

Congrats to you and the team.
I will give it a try "Live Boot"
Having spent quite some time configuring & setting up 2 PC and a Laptop to all be the same on LL2.0
Not sure I'm ready to do them all again so soon.

"New Tool for 2.3"
Linux Lite Migration Tool :)

Dave

ps
SourceForge shows 6635 downloads this week,
I assume this is all variants

Anything on 2.2 that is different from 2.0 you can easily install if you haven’t already. The bulk of the changes are in the form of software. re. Sourceforge, yes all variants. Existing 2.0 users are fine, remember, LL is aimed at new users to linux, they will benefit from installing 2.2

I've noticed that  Date & Time is not in the settings.
Here is how to add Date & Time to the settings
Code: [Select]
gksudo leafpad /usr/share/applications/system-config-date.desktopChange Categories=... to
Code: [Select]
Categories=XFCE;GTK;Settings;DesktopSettings;X-XFCE-SettingsDialog;X-XFCE-SystemSettings;or if you want it in the Hardware section
Code: [Select]
Categories=XFCE;GTK;Settings;DesktopSettings;X-XFCE-SettingsDialog;X-XFCE-HardwareSettings;Now it will show in the settings. Open it with
Code: [Select]
xfce4-settings-manager

Wonderful beta release. One suggestion -- for the Install Additional Software dialog box, could we have a "Select All/None" toggle check mark or button (perhaps left-aligned at the bottom on the same vertical plane as the Quit and Install command buttons.)
Thanks again,
Glen

5 mb/s via torrent.  Nice and fast.  Since I just installed 2.0 on my SSD, I might as well install 2.2 instead.  Since I'm probably the dumbest Linux guy here, I probably won't be much help but maybe my simple questions/suggestions will spawn better and more articulate questions/thoughts/suggestions.

Hi,

I have an HP-Laptop also.. with integrated SD Card, Never really used, but noticed your comment.
I found an SD Card and tried it from a
Normal Boot, Shows straight away on desktop mounted,

Thanks for testing and posting your results. My situation was different and I as usual did my description in shorthand without going into much detail. My SD came out of my camera taking pictures of my desktop. I guess I could use this Linux Lite 2.0 laptop to edit my post later to upload the pics offsite and post them in that post.

My HP is a Desktop Computer in the motorcycle shop. The SD adapter was a external usb card adapter. I plugged it in after a live boot and was running live to see if I would get lucky and it would automount in the Thunar file manager on the left panel.

fdisk -l showed me it made it that far where the computer could see it. blkid would not even complete a readout after I typed that in.
I am skilled enough to run as root in a live session inside of lxterminal. There were no directories in /media other than cdrom.
If you look at my inxi readout. You will see NTFS, and other partitions on the 1 drive in it. They did not mount on boot of live session
and some are ext3 partitions and others are xfs partitions.

Since I do a bit of testing for Anti, Bitjam, Dave, and others  at AntiX. I do not panic or worry at all because I realize the kernel on a distro interacts on different hardware and hardware scenarios differently. All I can do is gather info and post my findings with no judgment/attiude interjected. Just like I try to do here. But my scooter tramp style can be a little hard to stomach for some.

For grins I tried
Code: [Select]
eject to eject the plop cd as demo/user. Nope. No joy there. So I tried as root user in lxterminal
Code: [Select]
eject /dev/sr0But received the loctl error. Like I said. I was just screwing around to see what I could do while in a live session.
My 2.0 installs are running just fine. So I won't be installing 2.2 anyways. My post was more for a proof of concept that
Linux Lite 2.2 will boot on usb 1.1 with help from a PLOP cd. That was the main goal.

In My case. The camera formats the card so we see another variable in a testing post. Way to go.  ;D

I really appreciate your post/test results though. It shows that on a different HP. That results will vary a tad different.
You internal card reader picked up different than my external usb card reader. That is what testing is all about.
Sharing info. Showing what works and what does not work. On certain hardware and varied scenarios.

I am sure the developers here appreciate all you users inputs. And at MonkeyMan. Don't compare your your short stint
using linux to my years of experience. It is like learning a new language. Like from English to Mandarin or Spanish or whatever.
It just takes practice like anything in life. You will get it. My education only goes up to GED. So I can be pretty dumb also.

So any testing  input from you will also probably be very much appreciated. At least by me. It is how I learn new things.

Happy Trails, Rok

Hi Rok,

All noted, I will try pass on whatever I can, with all my "goofs" along the way I have probably installed LL about 14+ times.(across 3 Machines)
I just installed it in a VM(Virtualbox) this morning to use as test instance, all appears to be working... BUT
I have an error in the dmesg.log file which is rather alarming that I need to investigate, a 2nd re-install is the same..??
Code: [Select]
[5.881492] vboxguest: module verification failed: signature and/or required key missing - tainting kernelI have not installed GuestAdditions yet... Not sure though if that is the issue.??

Try a

Code: [Select]
sudo -s
to get you to a root prompt in vbox live run

and do a

Code: [Select]
dmesg | tail
If it does not show in that. I would not sweat the error message myself.
Just a poke an hope from me though.

This release could be released as is. Don't let the "beta" nametag fool you from this release! Great job Valtam!

One thing I would like to mention is that the 32-bit torrent I had trouble downloading from. KTorrent (KDE's torrent client on my other *unnamed distro* Linux laptop) reported that it received some "invalid" information from the Bittorrent tracker URL. The 64-bit version did download perfectly fine. Could have been just my connection though (it's 3G as it's the only thing available in my area, other than "slower than Molasses" Dial-Up).

So after testing and looking over everything why is LL 2.2 sticking with the 3.13 kernel instead of going with a later tested LL kernel? like 3.15 or 3.17?
I mean if it is going to be the updated version of LL why not push the kernel up to a later one?

The kernel released with the 14.04 LTS, in this case 3.13.0-24, is more reliable with the proprietary video drivers.

This has been mentioned in the past, the best clients to use are Transmission and Deluge. Cheers Teddy :)

i have a hp elite book can i update in terminal or must this be downloaded and reinstalled over current 2.0? curious if i should wait, this is a spare machine not my desktop so if you want it to be tested on 64bit laptops and to see how it goes, or should i wait for an official release and will it be similar, should people who are smarter to overcome bugs be left to figure this out or would you like everyone to try it? i will try it on 64bit laptop not my 32bit desktop which loosing information would be damaging... do you have a set date that 2.2 will be officially released or ran into known issues i do not run ssd..

i'm excited to see what you guys came up with first i'm hearing of 2.2 is now :)
backup sounds like a great idea, i'm guilty of messing with a script and needing to format..
also on my desktop i have screen savers disabled from startup and settings but my screen still blacks out here and there minutes idle not when going to sleep.

issues i might benefit possibly or just test? thanks for making my favorite distro btw, very logical and practical way to take on linux. 2.2 sounds cool, hope to try it soon. have you ever considered having openvpn pre-installed so you don't have to update the machine to install it? tiny issue it installs fine after update more curious about the other two features i mentioned, one being my screen blacking out for no reason while idle for a min or two and backup!

also on my desktop i have screen savers disabled from startup and settings but my screen still blacks out here and there minutes idle not when going to sleep.

Go to Menu -> Settings -> Power Manager.  Click on "On AC" and/or "On Battery" and check the settings under the "Monitor" tab(s).  Move the slider all the way to the left to make sure it never turns off the screen.  By default, I think it is set to turn the screen off after 10 minutes of inactivity whether or not you have screensavers activated.

UPDATE: We've been working everyday to make this release stable and ready for the public. There are a number of changes still to come, we still have to update the Help Manual with new images and tutorials, an updated Lite Welcome has to be added, I've added the new login screen, and as usual there are some new surprises that won't be announced until final release day. I think you will like what we've done. 2.2 contains the most significant changes to the OS ever, without compromising on performance or stability. On the contrary, thanks to your feedback on what you want to see in regard to software and features, LL continues to evolve into a simple to use introduction to a linux based operating system.

The work never ends, there is still much to be done in the long run for example, better Install Updates implementation, less user interaction on the command line, simpler network sharing configuration as well as a few other little niggles that I know we can do better on. For me personally this is the most exciting LL development phase I have ever been a part of :)

Thank you and keep on testing!

Hi colinkx250, no it doesn't. It's a tricky implementation, one that we have yet to conquer. This video shows you how to do it, so it's certainly doable even without the UEFI support on the disc.

Thanks for the link. A friend of mine hated his new windows 8 machine and even threatened to throw it out the window. He wanted to try Linux Lite after I told him how great and easy it would be to use having come from an XP machine. We were going to run a dual boot system but it had UEFI.I have since bought a second hard drive and booted in legacy mode and installed LinuxLite to that. Windows 8 drive has been removed and can be replaced if he isn't sure. Its a shame PC manufacturers are making it so hard for free open source OS with their UEFI support. Hopefully you guys will crack it as I think LinuxLite is not just for old hardware its one of the best systems I have come across.
Good Job!

Hi Jerry. The testing is going well. I'm limited to vbox but haven't come across any issues. It seems the same as 2.0 but at the same time just a notch quicker and a bit more refined. I'm eager to see what surprises you have in store with the final release.

Been with 2.2 Beta for some days now , great distro ( looks , performances , etc ) but sometimes it either unlog or reboot by itself  ! Haven t did it today yet , hopefully it s ok now , wonder why it had these issues .

I know it s Beta , so I don t really mind , not much differences as stated above . Had Linux Lite 2.0 before , never had issues with it .

Keep up the great work in there .

Have been running LL 2.2 Beta on old system (shown below) for about a week.  Runs impressively well on this P4 with only 512MB of RAM.  Firefox definitely hogs memory and occationally causes some lagging, but that's to be expected in this case.  Installed Midori browser and that is noticeably less resource hungry.  (My first experience with Midori.  Not bad, but I still prefer Firefox.)

100% [Waiting for headers]

Anyone else experiencing this?  Or have any idea why it's happening?

P.s.  Just tried out on main computer running LL 2.0 and same thing happens.  Have a feeling that it's just a temporary problem with the download servers.

Hi Bill,

Install Updates just ran fine for me. I'd bet that it's a server issue. The only thing I can think of is the update server selection.

How it all going folks? For those that are testing, have you found any quirks, anomalies, bugs?

Have been running LL 2.2 Beta on old system (shown below) for about a week.  Runs impressively well on this P4 with only 512MB of RAM....

However, today I tried to run the "Install Updates" and it seems to stall out and not get past a certain point --  it gets stuck at "100% [waiting for headers]" line....

Turned out to just be server problem.  Everything back to normal and working now.

Sorry if this has been mentioned elsewhere, but will the final point releases be available the update tool or do we need to do fresh installs?

Edit: Nevermind, I missed it in the OP.

So I guess my next question is, depending on the frequency of the releases, are users expected to do fresh installs multiple times per year to get the latest and greatest? It seems like a lot of work to customize the OS to your liking just to have to reinstall a couple of months later. Hopefully I'm misunderstanding this.

LL s a Rolling Release mate , you don t need to reinstall , just do the updates . Unless you want a clean install every times . More work .

Not based on what Jerry's original post says:

"There is no upgrade process from one Linux Lite version to the next because of all the in-between modifications"

Per LL's web site: Linux Lite is based on the Ubuntu LTS series of releases. However, it doesn't feel very LTS considering the need to do fresh installs. This is why I was hoping to get clarification.

Point understood , we ll have to wait on that . Well , I don t feel like doing a reinstall on my side , with all the stuff I either installed/removed .

Right, that's my concern too. Even on LL's web site it says it only needs to be installed once every 5 years. However, that's possibly misleading considering the user may be missing out on important LL specific patches to fix bugs with their own software. Again, hopefully I'm missing something.

Yep , I think there might be some way around these issues , maybe with LL Uddater or Upgrader , or LL installer , maybe someone will gives us a hand on that .

LL 2.0 is LTS until 2019.

I am not good with jargon.
Google tells me -
'Rolling release' is where an OS version is changed without a fresh install.
'Standard release' is where an OS version is changed by a fresh install.
Based on this LL is a 'Standard Install' OS.
Installing OS being changing the "whole".

Aspects of LL are updated including new things , examples being Add/Remove Software GUI improvements were available via install updates.
New tools such as 'Lite Cleaner' which were not part of LL2.0 are also available via install Updates.
Installing updates to the OS being the "parts".

I am sure one of the staff will clarify things more exact and concisely, using the correct terminology.

That's my take on it as well. I'm thinking that if a user wants new stuff and doesn't want to reinstall, they will need to wait 5 years for the next LTS. lol.

Also you are right about rolling release. Arch Linux is an example. You install it once and continually get updates whenever they are available.

Edit: Or two years, rather. Ubuntu LTS is every 2 years but supported for 3 on desktop and 5 on server. I'm thinking the devs may want to update the language on the LL web site.

On LL Help page it s written this :

Operating System:

Current Release Name: Linux Lite 2.0
Architecture: 32bit and 64bit
Software Base: Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

The Software Base is LTS as stated above , I guess I ll need a turnaround on fixes & bugs or whatever will be needed .

Gee , now I m confused ! lol
Title: Re: Linux Lite 2.2 Beta Released
Post by: Mike on November 28, 2014, 07:53:06 PM
From what I can tell, Ubuntu LTS is the software base and is supported for 3 years even though LL's web site says 5. The additional LL specific software may require re-installation but I'm confused because the 2.0 release notes say they have their own repo now: "This also marks the beginning of our own repositories for our custom software so that changes and improvements to the operating system can be offered regularly."

Oh well...I'll wait for one of the devs to chime in.
Title: Re: Linux Lite 2.2 Beta Released

You bet , we ll wait on devs on that .

Guess we ll have to make some backups & reinstall newer installs & put in our stuff in there afterward .

Jerry: You may want to remove catfish from the software installer since it looks like it's part of 2.2 now.

Edit: Nevermind. I just remembered if users are on an older version they still might want it installed. Duh.

As some other folks have indicated, I will probably not be at a point very soon where a I will want to do a full release/install to upgrade to 2.2, however there have been some great discussions about some of the changes and additions in 2.2, such as the archiver (I believe file roller is "in" and xarchiver is "out"?), back-up programs, etc.  I suspect that when the final release is out software changes and additions will be listed out?

While I am not looking to upgrade to a new release soon, I have been looking at back-up programs, etc. and if the LL Software installer had the option to install some of these new choices that would be awesome.  The ability to easily add (for example) a back-up program that is known to work well with LL would be very useful.

Hello!

This 'UEFI on 2.0/2.2' procedure in the YouTube video didn't work for me, either. Here's why:

All was well until the stuff he mounted in the terminal on the Ubuntu LiveDVD didn't mount for me. Things went downhill from there - dependency issues (some could be fixed, others could not), and the like.

In dude's video, he types: 'for i in /dev/ /dev/pts/ s /proc/ /sys;'. To get the command to work, I had to change this to 'for i in /dev /dev/pts/ s /proc/ /sys;'. He also fails to mention that you need to be online before executing 'apt-get update', but that's a no-brainer.

Later, when 'apt-get purge -y --force-yes grub* shim-signed linux-signed*' is executed, it needs linux-image to install linux-image-extra, but linux-image isn't called. This creates a dependency issue that requires 'apt-get -f install' to fix. After that, I reissued the purge command, and the rest of the procedure seemed to function properly.

It now boots in UEFI, but it still has the same issue with it that legacy mode does - it takes F-O-R-E-V-E-R for the logoff menu to come up - so long it makes you think it's locked up. I'll try booting the LiveCD with some ACPI parameters, and see what happens...

N4RPS,

Don't know what long shutdown problem might be -- sorry -- but have a feeling that the video is just running the same commands that Boot-Repair would do for you in converting to UEFI from a Legacy install:  Converting Ubuntu into EFI or Legacy mode (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI#Converting_Ubuntu_into_EFI_or_Legacy_mode).  Probably would have been much easier that way.

Hello!

I'm sure you're correct about that. At least I caught the fatal error in the video, though!

It DOES boot faster with UEFI, but still having the L-O-N-G delay (more than a minute) before the 'Log Out' screen appears. Someone suggested pressing CTRL-ALT-F2 and then CTRL-ALT-F7, which brings up the logout box post haste.

This bug does not seem to occur on other Ubuntu LiveCDs such as Ubuntu (Unity) or MATE Remix. In all fairness, I haven't tried this with Lubuntu or Xubuntu proper yet, so I won't have a full picture until I do. However, it would seem that fixing LL to boot in UEFI mode will NOT fix the failure to shut down or reboot properly on UEFI systems. Funny.  If I click on 'Switch Users', the logon screen appears, from which one can reboot or shut down with no issues.

If this proves to be XFCE-related, it may be something you folks can't solve. From what I have seen online, this issue seems to have been going on with Xubuntu for over a year now, with no fix in sight. The fix that comments out 'Xubuntu' from /etc/upstart-xsessions' does nothing to fix this. So far, it's either click 'Switch User' and log off THAT WAY or press CTRL-ALT-F2/CTRL-ALT-F7 to get to the logout screen...

Out of curiosity, did some looking into the "slow shutdown" issue because I've seen multiple posts about that (mainly in Mint forums).  Seems like there is no "one" fix for everyone and you may have already tried most/all of below, but here are some things to look at:

1.  Can't remember where I read it nor find the post, but from memory I seem to think someone said that if they used shutdown from the main Menu they had the problem.  But if they added "Action Buttons" to the panel and used that instead, they didn't have the problem.  No idea why that worked, but something to look into if you haven't already.

2.  Someone claiming success by adding boot option "splash=verbose nomodeset" (http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=181712#p942494).

3.  Saw a number of posts from people with Broadcom wireless cards who claimed uninstalling all broadcom, then reinstalling only the necessary driver  worked for them.  Suggest if this applies to you to use this page (http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/b43#Comparison_of_recent_drivers) to find out exact driver that applies for you first.

4.  Two posts describing ways that might help diagnose what's going on during shutdown that may give clue as to what's wrong:

It may have something to do with the filesystem used. I'm using btrfs and only have a 3 second shutdown. There could possibly be some options to add to your fstab to improve performance as well.
