Title: Linux Lite 2.0 Beta Released
Post by: Jerry on May 15, 2014, 06:59:45 PM
Release Announcement

Linux Lite 2.0 Codename 'Beryl' Beta is now available for download and testing.

This build is the work of 4 months of constant development and the implementation of the best ideas from the team and the wider community. This also marks the beginning of our own repositories for our custom software so that changes and improvements to the operating system can be offered regularly. Now Lite User Manager, Lite Manual, Lite Software ( Install Additional Software and Remove Additional Software) and Lite Fix can evolve more easily to meet the needs of the user.

In this release we wanted to combine the newest versions of well established and supported software like LibreOffice, Wine and Gimp so that people have access to the latest features in those programs. In Linux Lite 2.0 you get the carefully crafted combination of current software in certain programs on top of a stable operating system. We think this is the happy medium people are looking for between long term support whilst also having 'the newest stuff'.

Changelog:

Firefox 29
Kernel 3.13.0-24
Linux Lite Repositories
Lite User Manager, Lite Manual, Lite Software and Lite Fix
Easier Volume control
Terminal windows have custom title bars
New 'lighter' theme
New system font - Droid Sans
New Software - Lite Fix: a tool for new users to easily fix common issues without needing to go to the command line (see end of post)
New boot screen design
The latest software from - LibreOffice, Gimp and some of the software from Install Additional Software (see below)
Install Additional Software now offers the latest: Wine, Chrome, Chromium, Netflix, Skype, Teamviewer and XBMC.

Lite Software - https://github.com/linuxlite/litesoftware
Lite Manual - https://github.com/linuxlite/litemanual

Both of these iso's come in at 699mb, that's cutting it close to mark when it comes to fitting a modern operating system onto a cd.
As a result we've had to search the entire filesystem for where we can make savings. One of those areas was the icon cache files. To regenerate these cache files which should give you a performance boost, enter the following command after a fresh install of Linux Lite 2.0 Beta:

Code: [Select]
sudo su

gtk-update-icon-cache /usr/share/icons/Faenza/ && gtk-update-icon-cache /usr/share/icons/gnome/ && gtk-update-icon-cache /usr/share/icons/Humanity && gtk-update-icon-cache /usr/share/icons/Humanity-Dark/

Live USB/DVD/VirtualBox/Vmware: Login is automatic, no credentials required.
The image can be written to a 2gb or larger USB stick, or a writable CD or DVD.
Alternatively, you can use the dd command: sudo dd if=linux-lite-2.0-beta-32bit.iso of=/dev/sdx bs=4M where 'x' is the letter of your usb stick.
In linux to find out the letter of your usb stick, open a terminal and type: df -h It is usually listed as 'media' or similar.
Please see the built in Help & Support manual if you require a more detailed explanation of this procedure.

There is no upgrade process from one Linux Lite version to the next because of all the in-between modifications. If 1.0.6 or 1.0.8 is working well for you stick to that, otherwise you will have to clean install 2.0. The Help Manual is a work in progress and will update over the course of the beta. The dark theme is still available from the Settings Manager for those who prefer it, but you will notice that volume icon in the tray appears white, this is a theming issue. All Ubuntu 32bit kernels these days ship with PAE, we will not be creating any more PAE builds, it's time to move on.

Recommended Hardware/Minimal System requirements:

700 MHz processor+
512 MiB RAM+
5 GB of hard-drive space+
VGA capable of 1024x768 screen resolution
Either a CD drive or a USB port for the iso

Login to the live desktop is automatic.

The first thing you MUST do after a fresh install of Linux Lite is run Menu, Install Updates.

Lite Fix: This is a tool for new users to easily fix common issues without needing to go to the command line. As common issues come to the fore, a fix for these will be added as a new menu entry into Lite Fix. (Lite fix is not installed by default because there are no fixes available in the program yet)

Hello, Valtam!

I have download both ISOs, and they passed the MD5 hash checks. I'll try 'em out on the 'kids', and get back to you folks on the forum about them...

I've installed on 2 different laptops, an HP netbook style with AMD E-350 and 3GB RAM, and an HP Elitebook Core I-5 with 4GB RAM.  Install went smoothly on both.  System is running well on both and I've added/removed software to turn them into my "standard" configuration.  My next test is to run relinux on the Core I-5 machine and create an ISO I can use to move this standard config to other machines...

Hope it's O.K to ask this here.?

1. I would like to try 2.0 Beta on one of my PC's, if I install it, will it need a new install when "Final" is released.?

2. Is there a fix in 2.0 for the "Locale Change" issue...
Changing the locale to "English UK" causes the main menu items names for "Install Updates" & "Help Manual" to change.?

Many Thanks
Dave

On #1, generally not as the base system is installed and it will update to final.  Not always but generally.  Can't help on the locale issue...

Hello!

Congrats, Valtam! Hope the free publicity brings a lot of new folks your way. The only issue I've noticed so far it that it doesn't want to come back on after I close the laptop lid and reopen it. All I get is a cursor and a black screen. (IOW, the screen isn't unlocking, or even prompting me for a password to unlock it.)

As for Wirezfree, can't he just go into Menu > Settings > Main Menu (Alacarte) and rename the affected menu entries as necessary? Does 'Restore System Configuration' still amount to 'the kiss of death'? If so, there's SURELY got be some kind of way to change the default menu structure to match yours - even if it involves altering the Alacarte source code...

Yes, any attempt to restore will screw up the Menu. I've removed all the other locales in the .desktop files for "Install Updates" & "Help Manual" so it should be fine from now on, but we need someone to confirm this (on the 32bit version, I have just fixed the 64bit version).

Hi Wirezfree.  I'm in UK too so would you like me to change mine to see what happens.  You'll have to tell me what to change as I'm still playing around with it. ie where is" locale change".

Am using the 32 bit version.

In relation to the "English UK" language, I had this problem when I installed version 1.0.8 - see https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/index.php?topic=127.0 (https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/index.php?topic=127.0)

I tried fresh installs 4 or 5 times and each time I selected "English UK" the menu layout changed and clicking on a couple of menu links caused problems.

I stuck with plain "English" and everything was fine - there is obviously still something wrong, but at that time nobody could recreate my problem or find a solution.

Mumble must be hard wired into the menu as you just can't remove it.  I uninstalled it and it's still there.  Doesn't show in alacarte though...

On the programs that run in terminal like install additional and remove additional - why not just keep all actions in the terminal?  Kind of odd when you type in a number and then it jumps to a GUI interface for the actions and then back to terminal.  It works well, the interface is just odd...

On the login screen there is no way to select the desktop environment to use if you have more than Xfce installed.  I tend to jump between LXDE and Xfce so I installed the LXDE meta-package - I just can't select it at login...

Good job on the release of the beta for LinuxLite 2.0 - It looks nice so far.

I'm quite new to LinuxLite (have a low spec laptop running Puppy elsewhere) but I have a couple of questions on the install.
Not sure if this is the best place to ask, but I can't see a specific beta forum?

1. When I select "Erase whole disk" and "Use LVM" during install, I get a crash saying I need to check virtual console 4 and then syslog for the reason that the disk partitioner was unable to create the disk layout. I can't see any details there. Fdisk shows me that /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda5 have been created. This is on vbox with an 8GB disk. Works fine if I do not select LVM (I was going to use LVM so I could resize the virtual disk and change partition sizes later).

2. I see reference to a 2GB USB disk requirement, but the installer asks for 5.3GB minimum. Is the requirement 2GB or 5.3GB? I suspect it might be 2GB for booting the install from and 5.3GB for a full install, or do you offer the ability to write back to the USB stick al-a Puppy? I'd like to know so I can purchase some USB drives for some diskless laptops that I want to use LinuxLite 2.0 on. Puppy is a little too quirky, and I like how LinuxLite looks more standard.

Congratulations again on what looks like a great release.

This is a distro for newbies to Linux, we don't anticipate them installing and configuring other DE's nor do we offer support for that. That would put us in a position of supporting and troubleshooting beyond what we have the man power for at the moment, we're better to spend what little free time we do have outside of RL on support for the software we provide ootb.  Cheers.

Check in /var/log for the error. It could be that it just won't work in a vb but may on hardware.

Fair enough as you will probably attract the users you seek and lose others.  Good luck to you...

Hello!

To change languages, it's under Menu > Settings > Language Support.

To remove Mumble, it can be done in Install/Remove Software (Synaptic Package Manager) or, in a terminal window [CTRL-ALT-T], type the following...

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove mumble
Sometimes, a logout/logon or reboot may be required for menu entries to disappear. If they're still around after THAT, the .desktop files that comprise the menus are located in two places:

/usr/share/applications
/home/<USERNAME>/.local/share/applications

To see files or folders beginning with '.', 'Show Hidden Files' must be checked (enabled) in the file manager. To delete anything outside your home directory, you have to logged in as root...

No, we dropped it. It was really just the lubuntu software center rebranded. You can install it if you like through Synaptic (lubuntu software center ).

Oh no, that was probably my favorite addition to this distro! It allowed multiple adds to app basket to install a lot at once and not one at a time. Does the Lubuntu Software Center do the same thing with app basket for more installs at once?

Hello!

Yes, you can batch-install apps with the Lubuntu Software Center, also. I've used it in the past, but I like to see what happens as they're being installed, so I do most of my software installing through a terminal window or Install/Remove Software (Synaptic Package Manager).

Towards that end,

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install lubuntu-software-center "gits 'er done"...

One minor issue to report, the zip format doesn't appear in the drop down list when you create an archive via thunar context menu (or via xarchiver directly). The manual suggests it should be available, here's the relevant section:
https://www.linuxliteos.com/manual/software.html#archive (https://www.linuxliteos.com/manual/software.html#archive)

Doing this fixes it:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install zip
I've only tested the 32bit version.

It's nice and fast so far, hibernate works, and I'm enjoying the updated evince and catfish.

ps. What was the rational for making Gnome Document Viewer the default app to open pdfs? Not a complaint, I'm just curious.

We'd had reports from some people saying on the pdf files they opened, epdfviewer was displaying strange colours. Since we've been using evince there have been no such reports.

My son has been using Linux Lite 1.08 for many months on a desktop with an Intel core 2 duo processor and we love it.
Today I'm trying out Linux Lite 2.0 Beta on our main computer. Even with the 3.13 kernel (which it seems doesn't like the MSI motherboard/AMD processor) the Live CD works beautifully, unlike many other Ubunbtu 14.04-based distros I've tried out lately. My HP printer/scanner works great, graphics work well, very low RAM usage.
My only concern is, it didn't find any proprietary drivers for my Nvidia graphics. When trying out Voyager 14.04 Live CD and some other XFCE distros, I had the option to install the propriety drivers. I wouldn't even care because the open source driver seemed to work fine using the Live CD. But then when I tried launching Firefox, the display went to hell with the crazy colors and lines and everything froze. If I were to install LL 2.0, would the open source driver work OK, or would I have an option to install the Nvidia driver?

Yes, there is. After install I tried it first. With compositing enabled it is maybe a little bit better.

Hi wyldekey. Please try the (menu>settings>install drivers) one more time. My nvidia drivers were automatically updated today, just a few minutes ago. I'm wondering if backend stuff was syncing last time you checked and it caused you to get no options.

Just downloaded the iso onto my desktop and used netbootin to create a usb stick. I have it stuck in my Acer Aspire 3000 laptop and it is very smooth even for running from the stick. I am still evaluating its capability to run on the stick as I know lots of people will try it that way first before trying to install it. It is looking real nice and real good though, good job Valtam. Will keep you informed of my progress. (LL 2.0 v32bit)

I was running the Live CD(DVD) again just a while ago, but I still get "no proprietary drivers available" or something like that. I may go ahead and install Linux Lite 2 anyway. If I actually install it to my hd tomorrow, I have a feeling the driver thing may be resolved. Thanks.

I was running the Live CD(DVD) again just a while ago, but I still get "no proprietary drivers available" or something like that. I may go ahead and install Linux Lite 2 anyway. If I actually install it to my hd tomorrow, I have a feeling the driver thing may be resolved. Thanks.

Did you run Install Updates before checking for drivers?

Can I install updates in a Live DVD? I never thought to do that if it wasn't installed to the HD!
I'll try it out. Thanks for the reply.

Installing them won't work but checking for them does. After you have done that you can check Install Drivers.

Just to put my finds in too re video drivers.  After over a week of updating LL2.0 I myself still have no additional drivers listed for my Radeon HD 4200. So for myself running updates doesn't appear to help with wyldekey's problem.  Other than that this new OS is amazing.

There is no driver for the Radeon HD 4200, it's a legacy chipset. The open source driver that is already installed will work fine for you.

Yeah forgot to put that.  The OS driver works amazingly well and the display is so crisp and bright.  Better than windoze looks on same laptop!!  Great work Valtam.

2. Is there a fix in 2.0 for the "Locale Change" issue...
Changing the locale to "English UK" causes the main menu items names for "Install Updates" & "Help Manual" to change.?

Many Thanks
Dave

We can't test all locales, try a test run install in a virtualbox first to find out.

Hi Valtam,

Will try this weekend if I get a chance.

Dave

Hi Valtam,

Sorry for long delay... A distraction called "Work" gave me no time for anything recently.

I have done an install of LL 2.0 Beta.
The issue with changing the Locale(Language Support) to English UK and it affecting the the Menu items for Install Updates & Help does not occur.

To confirm I followed exactly the steps I used in 1.0.8
Menu > Settings > Language Support
then on:
Language Tab: Dragged "English UK" to top, apply system wide
Regional Formats: selected "English UK", apply system wide

restarted and checked Menu, Install Updates and Help are not re-named.

Thanks for LL 2.0

Dave

No problem...
If there are other items for LL 2.0 Beta to report,
should they go here, or under install in the Software forum.. noting it's for LL 2.0 Beta??
Currently have only 1 minor thing.

Hi Valtam,

Minor issue...
I have enabled the Desktop icons for File System, Home and Rubbish Bin.
I position them on the Desktop where I want them,
on re-starting they default back to top left of screen.

On 1.0.8 they remain in the in the position I place them.

Thanks... Dave

Position your icons where you want them and try ticking 'Save session for future logins' on the shutdown dialog.

Ongoing Live CD tests
Fujitsu Siemens Amilo V3405 and Si1520  Similarly spec 2 GB RAM + Intel Dual core 1600.
Have complicated all functioning keyboards. Not identical layouts.   Both currently running on Mint 13 - with no particular set up problems.  UK English
wifi  internet works etc no problems connecting.
Have not needed to test blue tooth or the other  keys so can't comment on whether all the options function

Live cd LL..2.0 - can not find a way to get keyboards to function properly under live CD   (  by mess = see below)- Hence unable to log onto wifi  etc.

Therefore took the plunge and installed LL2.0 over Mint - clean install on the Amilo Si1520.  Installation smooth although finding the English UK  keyboard option (and layout routine typing in various keys and answering yes/no questions during installation) was not intuitive IMHO.  Might put off a less determined newbie.

After installation keyboard output was still a mess  .  Hence went into menu>settings>keyboard>layout - unclicked  default and then keyboard model - Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo laptop option and then English(UK) layout closed and went to keyboard icon  on lower right of screen and still showed English US

Typing still gibberish. in that alt key function seems the be the default.?
Therefore rebooted.
Keyboard now seems to have overcome the locked alt on position but still showing/behaving as  English US

Any ideas please. Ta

Went inrio menu>settings>keyboard

If saving the session doesn't work (Valtam's suggestion), you could try this:

Full install LL2.0  32bit on Amilo Si1520  - 2GB RAM Vid= 1280 x 800 intel G945GM Express Integrated VGA
Xorg 1.15.1

Tried running latest google earth without success. Not suitable graphics card.  However GE works on this setup using linux mint 13  or puppy linux 5.7.1

Did not work with LL. 1.08 install on other Tosh Sat Pro A10 although again OK on Puppy Linux using Xorg 1.17 I think.

any ideas ?  Tks/

Hi Valtam,

That works, I also tried the method from "nlube" which also works.
I actually have stuck with the nlube method, no offence Valtam ,
It seems more logical to do it with the desktop config file, given it's the desktop config

Thanks... Dave
Title: Re: Linux Lite 2.0 Beta released - Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Series Update
Post by: newtusmaximus on May 26, 2014, 06:35:13 AM
Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pro laptop Si1520 + V3405
Summary Amilo pro Si1520 & V3405  Similar spec but different multi function keyboards to keep space/size down.
Live CD  LL 2.0 32bit Default keyboard layout English US.
On both of the keyboards numbers letters and symbols are intermixed making testing of wifi  ( password login) nigh impossible without detailed  testing of what key does what  via libre write.
Doing the menu-settings> keyboard >layout> Unclick defaults and set  model ( Fujitsu siemens amilo)>Layout (English UK).  Does not solve problems
Menu>settings>Language Support ( English UK, English  makes no difference as package can't connect to the internet

Is there a way that this can be got round simply- as Live CD are the first “proving Ground” for a first  tentative look at LL.

For the the Full install on the Amilo Si1520, following the above procedures did improve things but left with English US keyboard and its key differences..
HOWEVER if then menu>settings>keyboard input methods >advanced and tick  Keyboard Layout to ”use system keyboard layout “  and then restart. Keyboard appears to adopt UK English layout although icon  ( bottom RHS screen) still states English US.

Have not tried this full install on the Amilo Pro 3405 as need it for backup and its keyboard layout is slightly different from the Si1520

Keyboard test. Lower case then upper case

Hello, Just installed 2.0 beta and think its fantastic! Almost have everything working. ( this is on a Dell Inspiron 1525 Laptop.

Im trying to find a windows replacement for my sisters laptop, so far i have tried Zorin os and Linux Lite 1.0.8
So far i have everything working except: System sounds (ex - Start up and shut down sounds, minimize and maximize windows, log on, log off, error ect... )
i have enabled: Event sounds under appearance Settings, tried to install some Canberra Stuff? Still no system or event sounds?
So far i am loving this OS and think i can get some people to switch to it, just need to get it working as close to windows as possible, so if anyone could point me in the direction i would appreciate it.

I have done numerous google searches spent a few hours trying things and still no system sounds working
(all the other sounds work, youtube, music, video, etc...
Keep up the great work this Os is going to be awesome!
Thanks,
Tommy

Hello, i have another question,
Using 2.0 beta, I installed google chrome, (and chromium to test as well) and i am trying to get the shows on http://abc.go.com/shows     to play, but i get a error saying: Shockwave flash has crashed? i checked and chrome (and chromium) has the latest pepperflash installed, can anyone try this and confirm, is there a way to get the shows to play on abc.com and chrome? it works in winows and mac.

Also quicktime movies (not apple movie trailers) wont play in chrome or chromium either as in here:
http://www.apple.com/logic-pro/in-action/         Scroll down to:Nine inch nails take to the stage video, i get a message saying: Get quicktime?
Other than that everything is working great in beta 2.0, i am loving this OS, Thanks!
Tommy

Hi

Thanks for the 2.0 beta. I have installed in virtualbox and everything seems OK. The most exciting thing is the weather plugin works for this 2.0 beta now. It was not before 2.0 beta. One question is: where to find the directory of wallpapers now? It just shows 'xfce' folder on the desktop setup. It used to at the folder of ' /usr/share/xfce4/backdrops/'. I like linux lite very much because it fits my needs. Thanks and congratulation to the development team. I know the final release of 2.0 is out when writing this message.
