Other / Re: Screensaver interrupts fullscreen Firefox videos
« Last post by Şerban S. on March 06, 2024, 06:00:20 PM »
I'm just asking...
Is the screensaver such a critical program?
I never use screensavers. They suck a lot of resources (computing power) to do... What? Nothing?
I could never understand the use of this.
Save what? Do what? Show images while I'm away from the computer? Again: while I'm away from the computer?
Why would I bother?
But, as always: The client is always right!

Anyway...
If you think this is such a critical piece of software, try tweaking the parameters of the screensaver itself. If it is a serious software, it has at least some such parameters like "Never show when watching video."
As for the internal parameters setting , they work exactly as you described: from time to time. I assume that interrupting video, is kinda "bonus feature", although, unsolicited...
This story goes backwards as far as when I started to use Linux: 1997. I presume that some people find it very funny, since no one bothered to fix this in over 25 years...

Best regards

Hello from Romānia!

Also, welcome into this community!

Greets from sunless and drab British Isles..........

Hi!
Ive been using Linux based OS's for about ten years. I currently use several machines with Linux Mint Cinnamon and Ubuntu 22.04 Jammy Jellyfish (silly name or what?).

Im a masochist, I dual boot with Windows 11 and I also run Virtualbox's for test driving stuff.

Recently I found LinuxLite and I really like it. Im running LL 6.6 in my VB now. It has run faultlessly so I am pretty certain that this OS will be a breath of fresh air for a couple of my lower spec laptops. I may even adopt it on a couple of my better models.

I see this system has been well thought out and incorporates some damn useful stuff. It saved me hunting trough synaptic and software manager.

Any rate.............

Thanks, and Ill be keeping an eye on the forum here for sure.
 :beamup

I've been using Mint for 5 years on a daily basis, starting from 2012. I then moved to Linux Lite and this is the OS as if today.
Obviously, I'm pleased with it "from top to toe".
As for VirtualBox, I stopped distro hopping some years ago, but I used it for the same purpose, maybe about three years (or more?).
Since Linux Lite offers me all I need, and is fast and stable, I lack even the slightest reason to test anything else, even if that takes less than a day worth of work for an in-depth testing.

Dual booting with Windows.

I can relate to that.
In Romania, the government favors Microsoft. All the administration uses Windows so if you have some official papers to solve (finances mostly), you're trapped in the Win world.
Lately, some web apps emerged but for whatever reason, officials move slower than a lazy turtle...

My best regards, Șerban.

Introductions / Re: How to get the proper Support you are seeking
« Last post by Şerban S. on March 06, 2024, 03:30:48 AM »
I would just like to know how to post a question [...]

My approach is the following:

I use the "Search" box (the upper right corner). Enter keyword/key-phrase than hit "Enter" (or CR, Return). Very much like in Google search. If there is anything in the database resembling the keyword(s), you'll get a result.
If the list is too long, you can narrow the search, inspired by one title or another found in the results page.
If nothing comes out, then go to the main page and pick the nearest category that fits to whatever you want to post. You need some time to get used to the structure, but this is what happens with any forum over time. Articles and replys are added every day so there's a lot of stuff here to look for.

Generally speaking:
1. Go to Forum Index.
2. Look for a Category that has the closest match to your needs. Read the description as it might help you decide.
3. After picking the category, look for the list of posts (articles). If you find anything resembling what you are interested in, than go to the upper right corner and hit the "New Topic" button.
You'll be presented with a page containing the article (post) editor.

, seems ignorant I'm sure but I'm new to all this.
It's too harsh to say that. I have some over 20 years on Linux (various distros) and some 6 years on Linux Lite and I still consider myself "ignorant". Everybody is ignorant at some point.

I have many questions and problems that need solving so how do I navigate to get answers to my problems?
The only way I could help here, is what I just described before that I do. Takes some patience, though...

I come back to find that no one responds, I ask again, how do I post on this forum?

Well, everybody has problems. Life nowadays, becomes more and more challenging. Some people, struggle with lots of problems, some others, struggle to meet ends.
In that landscape, some see Linux Lite, as some kind of Heaven, where things are like in "The Garden of Eden".
For me at least, sometimes this is the case. Sometimes, we lack the energy to answer questions. Just be patient. Search the net, maybe you'll find an answer. I found many Linux related answers in the Arch Wiki. It's a very extensive support Encyclopedia, I might say. Try that, if nothing comes in handy here and, again, be patient.

[...] I need answers from those of you who are knowledgeable with Linux Lite not crickets or smart ass responses, [...]

I have been on this Forum for three years. I never had the chance to see "smart ass responses". Even if someone tries this approach, it's highly likely that the post will be deleted or at best, the member warned to change his attitude.
We are here to help each other and playing "the smart ass" has nothing to do with the term "help".

About posting questions

Honestly speaking, my first year here, seemed to me like a nightmare! So many categories, so many posts! Where was I supposed to look for what I needed?!
In time I got used with the structure.
And even if this looks like taking too much time, here is an approach that will work:

"Hi, guys!
I'm very confused about where to place my post so here it is. Please, help me and place (move) this post where you find it appropriate, if you find that here is off-topic.
"

With this approach, I'm sure one of the Moderators will move and explain you where he placed the post and why. Maybe even give you some hints on where to search for the appropriate section in the future.

I will end this post with a quote from one of Jerry's posts:

Hi Daryl. In your Welcome email, you would have some information about the Forums, and a number of guides including a Posting Guidelines link. Once you've posted the images correctly, we'll be able to assist you. Cheers. Regarding your Printer make and model, this link https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=254412 offers a solution.

This is the article Jerry refers to:

https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/introductions/forum-posting-guidelines/msg78/#msg78

With those being said, I wish you a pleasant journey into the realm of Linux Lite!

Hi!

Welcome from Romānia, too!

Hi there from France   :wave ,

I'm new to Linux Lite, I installed it 2-3 days ago without issues [...]
If I don't manage to fix it myself I'll probably spam dev help section
[...]

I'm on LL since LL 4.2 and I never needed to "spam" anyone, let alone "the devs".
Besides, Jerry is a great guy himself (regardless the "head developer" title)!
I guess the best approach is to use the "Search" function of the Forum. I often use it on my own Forum (It's the same SMF engine) and it does a great job, assuming what you search is beyond the "exotic" category.
Far more than that, there are some very nice guys here, that are specialised (some, I guess, even experts!) and will surely give you enough help, provided that you come with specific questions and enough information about the issue(s) you encounter.

I don't have any USB storage attached. My initial guess was the Brother printer (that I have just disconnected).
It has been an hour since the disconnection and it appears to be the culprit. However I will keep monitoring the log in case anything else pops up.

Surprisingly I have not had any change of hardware for a long time and this phenomenon recently started. However worth to mention that printer has been configured to go into sleep mode after 60 minutes (that never bothered the PC), the firmware is latest and printer works flawlessly. It is however connected with TWO USB cords (to extend the reach to the PC as the printer is in the other corner of room).

Thanks!
From the USB devices list, my best guess is still some USB disk you are using and it somehow breaks the system.
For diagnosing disks, I use GSmartControl and HDSentinel.
It might be another problem though: The SATA controller might be unappropriate for the disk model. I have this issue from time to time.
If the disk works fine on other systems, than most likely, the device is unsupported or at least, has some incompatibilities on this machine.

Best regards!

Addition coming soon to Lite System Report - SystemD Report.

Great! Thanks a lot!
Sometimes, it's the only way you can pinpoint some nasty behavior!

Any news on LL 6.8?

Hi!

Try this:

https://deb.pkgs.org/packages/brave-amd64/brave-browser_1.57.47_amd64.deb.html

After downloading the .deb package, use the gdebi-gtk to install.

Good luck!

Hi!

I've been looking at the lines listed. I also had trouble (different causes, similar behaviour) related to some devices.
In my experience, the problem comes from your USB Controller. Namely, a certain device that is attached through the USB Hub you are using.
Watch closely the following lines.

Here's the latest log. I don't see anything. Let me know if you get any clue:

You can notice the number of errors on the attempts to access a device. I assume it is a storage media.
The polling USB routine attempts to reconfigure the bus but fails everytime.
Unfortunately, it is extremely difficult to figure out what really happens.
To make the long story short:
1. Remove any USB device attached to the system.
2. Plug in the USB devices one by one, in this exact order: USB Keyboard.
3. Start the computer.
4. Plug in the next USB devices, one by one: USB Hub; USB Mouse; USB Audio interface (if any); USB Printer. The last ones: USB Storage media.
5. At each step, write down on a paper IF something unexpected happens.

Please also do the following from the CLI:

Code: [Select]
sudo inxi -c 0 -ACdGMNSz

Post here the contents of the report.

Do also

Code: [Select]
sudo lsusb
Add the result to the post.

A little bit of digging, proves I got the trouble figured out correctly:
