Installing Software / My HP laptop wont charge the battery
« on: July 19, 2015, 12:11:40 AM »
I have checked all connections and have booted both in Win7 and In LL but the problem remains. The laptop does not see the power connection and thinks it's not connected. I have switched power cords but no use.
I went online and in trying the many suggestions ( none worked) the battery went flat and now the laptop does not switch on at all. I plugged the power cord in and the orange light flashe a couple of times but does not stay on. I left it overnight but it did not charge ( it was a desperate hope )
Any ideas?
Thanks

Installing Software / Slowing down...
« on: July 04, 2015, 10:11:23 PM »
The machine I am using has had LL installed the longest. I have noticed that it has slowed down significantly. What sort(s) of things can I look for to speed it up again to its original performance. I update, clean using lite twiks and run the virus scanner regularly.
Benchmarks
Any of this make any sense?
Thanks

Installing Software / My Linux Lite went CRAZY!
« on: July 04, 2015, 02:25:52 AM »
I have Linux Lite 2.4 installed on three machines and it has worked just fine until two days ago. On the oldest machine it booted up until the sign-in page then it started flashing on and off and did not proceed any further. I tried rebooting many times including in 'safe' mode but it did not fix the problem.
On one of the boots up i did notice a brief message at the top of the screen, it was very brief so i am not sure what it actually said but what it looked like is "Pg" endlessly repeated. Also duirng boot up in safe mode the word Casper seemed to occur a lot - I have no idea what it meant (no Ghost Jokes, Please!
)
Anyway the only thing I could do is re-install off a USB, making sure that the old installation was completely replaced. I did not lose anything important as this machine was mainly used by my grandsons for playing games.
But I would hate it to happen to one of the other two machines, so if anyone can explain what happened I will be grateful.
Thanks
Alex

Installing Linux Lite / [SOLVED] Some questions with dual booting
« on: February 11, 2015, 05:42:46 PM »
I recently bought a second hand HP laptop, which has Win 7 installed and running OK. I would like to retain Win 7 as I need it for a few non-Linux programs, on the other hand I love using LL for most tasks. So, I am considering having a dual boot machine, hence some questions:
1. Is it recommended that the dual boot be done using easy BCD? As shown in this video:
2. Is it a good idea to retain all banking/payments/ transfers in LL - because it is more secure?
3. How much HD space should I allow for the LL portion?
4. If a virus/malaware happens to infect the Win 7 partition is it likely to contaminate the LL partition?
5. Are there any other problems that a newbie like me should watch out for?
Thanks for your help

Installing Software / [SOLVED] Google Earth Removal
« on: January 25, 2015, 06:59:17 AM »
I installed Google earth and tried to run it but it must have changed from when I was running it a few years ago on Win XP as I received a notice that my graphics card was not sufficiently accelerated and that the program would not work.
Since it's useless to have it there...how do I get rid of it completely from my system?
Thanks

Installing Linux Lite / Speed Issues
« on: January 16, 2015, 11:10:51 PM »
When I first installed LL a few months ago I was impressed by its speed both on and off line. Since then there seems to have been an apparent slow down in speed, even in the time it takes to log in. In the old days with Win Xp this effect usually meant that the system needed a spyware/adware clean-up and a defrag session.
As I understand Linux systems both of these operations are not necessary - so, what might be slowing down my operations?
I did a system report, but it is double-speak to me and for some reason it was published as a html document in my browser ? I copied it onto a LO document (20 pages!)
Any ideas?

Installing Software / [SOLVED] Nokia PC Suite but for Ubuntu
« on: January 09, 2015, 10:22:15 PM »
I have a Nokia mobile and have not been able to download the pics in it since changing to LL. So to day i searched for a Linux alternative to the Win PC suite and came up with this link:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/nokuntu/?source=typ_redirect
After downloading i get this error message:

from the comments i thought that I might need nautilus, so I downloaded it from the synaptic, even restarted my computer (just in case).
But the error message was the same.Looking at the reviews it seems that mst people are using it with some success...any ideas what i am doing wrong?
Thanks

Installing Software / [SOLVED] Trouble with new USB
« on: December 04, 2014, 10:55:22 AM »
I recently bought a new USB stick and in an effort to password protect it (unsuccessfully) I did something nasty to it which results in the following message when i try to mount it (metaphorically):

No idea what it means, except for the fact that the new USB appears to be unusable now.
Anyone help?

Thanks

Installing Software / Time lapse
« on: November 27, 2014, 11:40:30 PM »
Wondering if any of you know of a time-lapse program suitable to use with a webcam to program it to take time lapse shots? Preferably Linux compatible as my virtual box/wine skills are thin.
Thanks

Installing Software / Encrypting USB drives
« on: October 17, 2014, 05:37:36 AM »
I was trying to encrypt or password protect a USB drive and I found a video explaining how to do this:
As described I went to the Synaptic Package Manager to download the "cryptsetup" and it showed that it was already installed...but I cannot find it anywhere, do I need a command to activate it somehow?
Thanks
