Should Series 5.x include VirtualBox support ootb? - Valtam - 01-01-2020 Your thoughts please. Thank you. Re: Should Series 5.x include VirtualBox support ootb? - DeepThought - 01-01-2020 The way some people are fixated with boot up speed, might be a good idea to leave it out. If people want to use virtualisation then they should be experienced enough to install it with all the dependencies needed. Personally, when you consider you can push the power button on a windows pc, go cook and eat a 3 course meal and return just in time to log in, I don't think Linux boot up is too slow ![]() Re: Should Series 5.x include VirtualBox support ootb? - TheDead - 01-01-2020 Multiple suggestions, maybe some are impossible : 1. ask interactively to install it (in the installer when installing permanently) 2. Detect if running in virtual machine and ask to install it or 3. execute it automatically when running from live USB in a VM 4. add it in Lite Softwares as an option. Re: Should Series 5.x include VirtualBox support ootb? - TMG1961 - 01-01-2020 I dont use virtualbox. [member=7644]DeepThought[/member] I run a dual boot with windows 10 on my laptop and windows beats LL when it comes to booting. Not by much but it does boot faster. I use windows 10 only for my genealogical research. Re: Should Series 5.x include VirtualBox support ootb? - Artim - 01-01-2020 It has frustrated quite a few people, judging by a look back at the number of threads pointing to the uninstall VBox and uncheck it in the Startup menu solution. While I understand that it makes it easier for reviewers, it's definitely not easier on typical users. Re: Should Series 5.x include VirtualBox support ootb? - minesheep - 01-01-2020 I have many virtual machines all running LL inside LL. Works like Qubes OS but more user friendly and better harware support. By the way never got Qubes working always random errors (not supported). This also enables possibility for deniable encryption by putting vdi files inside veracrypt encrypted drive. (encryption is legal in Finland) Re: Should Series 5.x include VirtualBox support ootb? - torreydale - 01-01-2020 [member=2]Jerry[/member] , I concur with [member=6925]Artim[/member] and [member=6733]TheDead[/member] Re: Should Series 5.x include VirtualBox support ootb? - firenice03 - 01-01-2020 ootb -- Maybe not.. I use VB on LL for somethings but I can install as needed.. Thus far Lite Software works fine for this... Do I use LL in a VB - not often, on occasion.. Perhaps on the Install Splash screen an option for virtualized support?? Thinking of options to keep it included... If not additional work. But it does seem to be a common theme to post the removal... Re: Should Series 5.x include VirtualBox support ootb? - Valtam - 01-02-2020 Thanks folks, the way forward seems clear. Community in actionI concur as well. While it has never caused me any trouble, anything to remove unnecessary used disk space is always a plus. Since most LL installs are done on real hardware, it makes perfect sense. However, if you still want to include it out of the box, just have the Vbox service and related services disabled by default and have a command or two (or a tiny one-click bash script) that users can input into a terminal after the VirtualBox install is complete. <-- Might be a good compromise but it would be just as easy to include in the Lite Software app and have users install it on their own terms. |
