LibreOffice Upgrade - Steven Katilius - 08-23-2019

Hello,
I have recently installed Linux Lite 3.4 on a very old Dell Inspiron 6000 Laptop (Celeron M Processor/2 GiB RAM/ 32 GiG Hard Drive)
I have used a couple of other Linux distros in the past (Ubuntu and Mint) which I like very much but for this particular laptop I decided to use something much lighter and chose Linux Lite.  So far i am very happy with it, since it is a 32 bit system and based on the Ubuntu 16.4 OS I am fully aware that support will end (April 2021) and that I cannot upgrade to the 4.0 series.

Lite 3.4 came with LibreOffice 5.1.6.2 and my question is:  "Can I upgrade the Office Suite to a newer release or should I stick with what came bundled in with the install?"  I am always a little concerned using software that is not up to date, especially when the updates fix bugs and possible security issues (I don't know this to be true with LibreOffice but it is in the back of my mind).   

I did upgrade the OS to 3.8 and that is how far I could go with this hardware, please let me know if there is a newer version of office that will work with Lite 3.8.  Thank you.

In case you wonder which version to download:

Fresh early adopter (6.2.5) as of now
Standard Previous branch (6.2.4)
Still Enterprise / Corporate use (6.1.6)

I use the fresh version FWIW. I think this way you'll find out whether a new version will wok or not. BTW, make sure to read the instructions on how to run the app, scroll down till you see Running the AppImage from the GUI follow those instructions and you should be fine.

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my question.  The information you gave me was great and I did follow the link you provided. 

Unfortunately, the only AppImage(s) version(s) available to download are the 64 Bit version(s).  I dug a bit deeper into their website and found a message saying that if you want to download the 32 Bit version you could email: antonio.faccioli@ libreoffice.org

I am going to do that, what do I have to lose.  Thanks again for the info, your response was helpful.

No problem. Happy to help. Smile Oh right, yours is a 32bit system, sorry, I missed that. However, I did find this https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2018/02/install-libreoffice-6-0-on-ubuntu and this https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2019/06/libreoffice-6-3-32bit-linux-support the first link points to an article in which the author explains how to install/upgrade LO up to vesion 6 in Ubuntu 16.04, the second one an article stating that it will drop support for 32bit systems from version 6.0.3.

That worked out perfectly.  I was able to update to version 6.2.6.2 so I am completely satisfied.
I read that 32 Bit systems are about 1% of the user base for Linux distributions out there so it is no surprise that support is slowly being dropped.  I'm just trying to keep some old equipment alive without having to invest in anything new since this is more of a hobby than a "work" situation, if that were the case I'd be more up to date with my hardware.

Good to know you solved it. BTW, to mark the thread as solved, go to your first post, the one you started with and click on Modify, when in editing mode, where reads Select Prefix, click to access the drop down menu and select Solved, save your changes and that's it.
