lap top won't shut down normally have to use start button. - Bart Leetch - 05-21-2019

/var/log/lite-software.log

Thx for help, Bart

Code:
/var/log/lite-software.log

That's a file name, not a message from the system.  And normal shutdown is using the "Start" button:

Menu Logout Shutdown

The start button I referred to is the mechanical push button on the outside of the computer case. to shut down i have to push & hold this button down until the computer shuts down. When I do this now it stops at desk top & doesn't shut down.

Please define what you mean by normal shutdown.

My mother has a laptop that gets stuck on every reboot and shutdown.  I have to manually shut it down using the power button.  I don't recall this happening in earlier Ubuntu based Linux distros.  But with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS based distros, it does.  I only tried Linux Lite 4.x and Linux Mint 19.x Cinnamon and MATE versions.  It wouldn't take a LM Cinnamon installation, and it gets stuck on reboots/shutdowns when using LL 4.x or LM Mate 19.x.  Not sure what the problem is.  I didn't try the following, but maybe this might help:

I plan on giving these options a try.  I may start with the first one that discusses "acpi=off".

Check out a previous thread I started.

Code:
https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/suggestions-and-feedback/possible-kernel-problems-with-ubuntu-18-04-and-latest-kernel/msg41538/#msg41538

specifically my reply #25

This sounds like the problem you both have. There are 2 ways of power management, APM and ACPI..... APM is an old way and has been deprecated, APM works via the bios while ACPI is OS based. Modern kernels no longer have the APM modules built and this causes problems with shutdown in old machines.

The easiest solution is to search the bios for power management settings and disable them. This allows the software based ACPI to work.

Hope this helps Smile

I now have this popping up.

Received error while trying to log out

Session manager must be in idle state when requesting a shutdown

Is there a simple fix?
