Touchpad not working on HP chromebook - JanetBiggar - 08-25-2017
Hello again,
A new touchpad question on a different computer!

As the first link indicated the touchpad is not working, but the USB mouse does work. I tried the solutions that were mentioned, however the link to download the kernel was no longer working. I then tried some other solutions mentioned when I googled (the mod probe -r psmouse and mod probe psmouse proto=imps AND also sudo modprobe -r psmouse and sudo modprobe psmouse) and neither worked (rebooted each time).
I then tried what was suggested in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaBVOJWQTOc
However, despite renaming the file "cros-haswell-modules.sh" and turning on source code (and updating) when I put in the "bash cros-haswell-modules.sh" it says no file or directory exists...( I also did the uname -r and determined I have 4.4.0-93-generic so substituted the 4.4.0 as per the video).
I then tried what was suggested in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAPSrbZvsjk and still no change.
So at this point I am thinking I may resign myself to this computer simply needing a USB mouse...unless someone can suggest a solution that I might be able to handle and execute properly

Saw this and your other post...
As you mention it's possible its kernel related.. When it comes to installing kernels, know how to back out...
But before you go down roads of importing and installing various kernels... LL lite has built in tools that will easily allow you to install "try" and remove kernels. I believe as far back as 3.13..

A few things..
- I would make a Systemback back up you can revert back if need be..
- Don't remove an working kernel until you know a the new is working as you need...
- If a kernel doesn't work at all and cannot boot - from grub choose the 2nd option for advanced booting to choose a different installed kernel - don't recall the exact line name.

Thanks for your link and suggestions. I will have a look and digest the info then decide if I should jump in or not. I did make a restore point prior to doing all the digging - will that be sufficient, rather than a back-up? This computer doesn't have anything on it other than the LL 3.4 so not any data to be lost.

Yes that will suffice...
Nice thing is that the kernel installer will simply install and remove versus any command line commands..

So I did some reading about kernels and have a bit more understanding, however still very basic!
I'm a little confused in that per the article from reddit (2014) it says to fix the touchpad issue to get 3.10 RC1. So although when I do the uname -r it says I have 4.4.0-93-generic am I still to "try" the 3.10 RC1 to see if it solves the touchpad issue?
I'm also confused as to whether this will change the whole system (computer) or just the touchpad issue.
I took a look at the Lite tweaks and saw the Kernel installer and Kernel Remover, however haven't checked those yet.
So unless it's best to simply work with a USB mouse I was thinking that since I really have nothing to lose other than maybe having at worst to reload Linux Lite on to this machine:
1) I should give it a go as it would be better to have the touchpad working (so that the youth who gets this computer won't have to be stranded if he loses the mouse).
2) I will probably learn stuff doing this...
So if someone can guide me/advise me as to which kernel I install OR if it's best that I simply not do anything your comments would be appreciated

Personally..I would advise to use the LL kernel installer... As these are easily installed and removed via the tool.

This way you can at least test other LL kernels without much trouble and revert back. If none work you haven't lost much.. Then I would try other avenues...
Not sure your Chromebook model.. But some info around an additional conf file or grub entries for reference...

I did try the 3.13 kernel, but it didn't change anything so I have decided to live with the need for the external mouse. Mainly I felt being so new to Linux Lite that I simply don't have enough knowledge and experience to delve further without perhaps getting myself into trouble

I have Dell inspire laptop and i installed synaptic touchpad but after installing it my touchpad and keyboard are behaving normally, nothing happend new. I wen to a post https://windowsclassroom.com/touchpad-not-working-windows-10/ , it says that installed synaptic is not compatible. Could somebody suggest me a good touchpad driver?

Could somebody suggest me a good touchpad driver?for me what worked was to install any driver and then revert back to the open drivers using the dont use this driver option and it reinstalled (you need WiFi or it wont work) it and boom working great , but i never faced this problem with LinuxLite tbh
