Sound volume is either 100% or muted - JaysAudioLite - 06-07-2017 Hi all, Just installed 3.4 on a HP Pavilion dv5000. I found when I launched Youtube one day through Firefox the volume was loud at 100% but turning it down from panel volume control has no effect until I reach close to 0% where it turns off completely. I have no gradual volume control. The same thing with VLC player. If I enter Sound Settings and find the Firefox / VLC stream then I can gradually control the volume however the global control does not do this and clearly that's a lot more convenient. Re: Sound volume is either 100% or muted - bitsnpcs - 06-07-2017 Hello JaysAudioLIte, have you installed restricted extras from Lite Software ? Here are some sound troubleshooting https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio Re: Sound volume is either 100% or muted - JaysAudioLite - 06-09-2017 Hi Bitsnpcs, Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately that package is not available through "apt". Do I need to add another repository? Code: linuxuser@linuxuser-UUF:~$ sudo apt-get install linux-restricted-modules-$(uname -r) Secondly I want to point another thing out - it turns out there is volume control but it all happens within the first 2 to 3% of controlling the volume slider. See this YouTube video that I made: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hi6P9HQ7_cc So in other words at 0% the volume is muted as expected, at 1% movement on the volume slider the volume increases to about 30%, at 2% the volume increases to 70% and at 3% it's at full 100%. All the volume range is controllable in the lower 3% of movement of the volume slider. Very strange. Re: Sound volume is either 100% or muted - bitsnpcs - 06-09-2017 Hello JaysAudioLite, at 0:59 on your video the gui upper right, padlock, and tick icon are highlighted, does this mean the volume control to the left of the padlock has been preset and locked to that preset ? Eg; unlock padlock, untick, (vice versa maybe), is the speaker icon to the left of padlock now clickable ? Adjust it then try without ticking. If the setting doesn't hold as a chosen default, tick it and try . Update, these do balance. On the playback tab is the volume set to 100% ? Altering this I see changes the ratio of the volume when adjust in vlc. What option are available and which is chosen in the Configuration tab. Example - Mine is at Analogue Stereo Duplex, and the output as Line Out, as I have speakers plugged in. Edit - You install restricted extras by doing - Menu>System>Lite Software and selecting restricted extras and clicking install. If this does not solve it, the step 6 on Ubuntu link mentions to install pavucontrol as another option, which gives more settings for control over audio. Screenshot link of that https://freedesktop.org/software/pulseaudio/pavucontrol//screenshot.png Re: Sound volume is either 100% or muted - JaysAudioLite - 06-12-2017 Hi again, Good news is I fixed the issue with this tutorial: https://chrisjean.com/fix-for-usb-audio-is-too-loud-and-mutes-at-low-volume-in-ubuntu/. And although this link addresses a USB audio adapter, it worked just fine for my hardware installed audio adapter.
