nVidia binary driver 361.42 not installing in LL3.0 - m654321 - 08-28-2016 Following installation of LL3.0 in set-up (1) in signature below, I clicked on Install Drivers to update the video card from the existing 'Nouveau display driver' to 'Nvidia driver version 361.42 from nvidia-361 (proprietary, tested)'. However the progress bar under Install Drivers hung indefinitely at four-fifths completion. I restarted the PC, and then went to open Synaptic Package Manager. However this would not open properly and I got the screen message that I should run the following command: Code: sudo dpkg --configure -a I ran this & got the following output from terminal: Code: mike@mike-G750JS:~$ sudo dpkg --configure -a The process appears to have hung indefinitely on the last line, i.e. Building initial module for 4.4.0-34-generic (i.e. left to run overnight, still the same in the morning). One consequence of this appears to be that I'm blocked from accessing Synaptic Package Manager, Lite Software, can't fetch package information lists, and the PC hangs at shutdown... How do I fix this? Mike Re: nVidia binary driver 361.42 not installing in LL3.0 - m654321 - 08-28-2016 I've just done a fresh reinstall of LL3.0 on another SSD, though still have the LL3.0 SSD with the above described Nvidia problem. I want to update to the Nvidia Driver from the Nouveau Display Driver. Rather than risk the same problem reoccurring, with version 361.42 using Install Drivers application, would it be better to use Synaptic package manager to install 361? Or should I avoid 361 entirely, and go for an earlier version e.g. 352 or 340? Or would it be better to use the terminal? Thanks for any help Mike Re: nVidia binary driver 361.42 not installing in LL3.0 - Valtam - 09-20-2016 What is your video card? Your signature in (1) does not show it. Your signature in (1) does not show it.Thanks for your reply Jerry - you actually partially solved my problem elsewhere on the forum, where you indicated that I needed Nvidia Optimus (via command line), as opposed to using the 'Install Drivers' GUI, as I had a Geforce 870M video card, and so I used the command line under Optimus in the graphics drivers section of the LL Help Manual. All working now so I'll mark this post as solved. However the Help Manual needs to clarify the following when installing or deciding to install NVidia Optimus: (1) How do I know if I need Nvidia Optimus on my computer? (If you hadn't told me, I wouldn't have known the answer - where does one go to find out?) (2) Make clear that immediately following a fresh install of LL, update the kernel, then do the Nvidia Optimus install, but do this BEFORE installing anything else (e.g. run 'Install Updates' after Nvidia Optimus) Many thanks for your help & interest - much appreciated Mike Re: nVidia binary driver 361.42 not installing in LL3.0 - Valtam - 09-22-2016 The Help Manual does state how to check what graphics card you have, see the lshw command under nVidia. Glad you got it sorted. Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk |
