Missing Left Bracket - pauloz - 01-26-2016

Hello.

I'm noticing when I want to type a left bracket i.e. SHIFT 9 on my keyboard, it does not display, no matter what program I'm using. I use this quite often so it's rather annoying. It was working previously when I had Linux Mint Cinnamon installed on my Asus Zenbook UX-21 for a few weeks. I had other issues with Cinnamon so decided to ditch and install LL. Everything is fine except for this little problem. Given it was working previously using Cinnamon, I don't think it's a hardware problem. Can anybody help please?

Thanks
Paul

While I can't help with this little problem of yours Paul, I just wanted to say that I'm finding a few little things not quite working as they once did either. I just work around them and not bother to use them if I can get away with it.

I do hope you can find a solution for your problem without too much time passing.

Did you check the Start page in the Manual? It addresses keyboard.

There's nothing there that addresses my issue. Every other letter, number and symbol display OK. I had this same problem when I had LL installed on this machine previously. I thought I'd try Linux Mint Cinnamon to see if it would solve this problem - it did but it was pretty buggy with other issues - e.g blank screen when starting up which started peeving me off. I reinstalled LL - everything seamless but for this. I can't believe how often I use it although I do a lot of writing - will have to work around it, maybe paste from Special Characters in LibreOffice.

Assuming what you're missing is the "(" open parenthesis (Shift+9)...
Check your keyboard that its set as a layout that matches... Try standards??

Some items from the help manual:

Quote:Keyboard Function

On some laptops you may have to enable Numlock as it is disabled by default. You could also try FN + Numlock to use your keys, or FN + one of the F keys across the top of your keyboard. This varies from computer to computer.

You can find information for adding or modifying hotkeys (or shortcuts) on the XFCE wiki.
http://docs.xfce.org/xfce/xfce4-settings/keyboard
You can adjust layout from the link above..

Re: Missing Left Bracket - avj - 01-26-2016

I would suggest you test the keyboard in a LL live environment either live usb or dvd.  If it works properly there, you may have some type of corrupted install.

Just wondering are you by chance using a separate home partition?  If so you may have some type of configuration mismatch.  That can be caused by using the same home folder across distros.

Re: Missing Left Bracket - pauloz - 01-27-2016

Thanks for the replies. This was a clean install of LL. I booted from a live USB and had the same problem. I'll just have to work around this - it's not a major issue but I thought I'd check the forum out first to see if anybody had an answer.

Re: Missing Left Bracket - Wirezfree - 01-27-2016

A Google for that Asus, shows quite a lot results for random keys not working because of loose keyboard cable.
Maybe worth checking it out, just to rule it out..??

Thanks Wirezfree - I've tried this before from that actual video. I'll give it a go again. It's just frustrating that the Shift 9 key was working fine when I had Mint installed - the only issue is with LL but I will not budge from LL just for that - it's still the best distro IMHO.

@pauloz, I guess it's worth a shot... Just to be sure.
I noted on one poster saying, "I have to this every couple of weeks"..!!!
