The Notification area contains a very basic battery and Network item and an invisible volume control. This problem is solved by deleting it from the panel and adding the "Indicator Plugin". This provides a volume control with access to Sound settings and a network applet which includes wireless connections.

I have just gone back to the live ISO to see why it differed from from the full install. The Indicator Plugin is activated by default in the Live ISO and maybe it should be retained for the final release.
