Linux Lite 2.2 - Software suggestions - Valtam - 11-06-2014 If there is a piece of software that you would like to see in Linux Lite 2.2? Please suggest it here. Before doing this, consider the following criteria: - Is it widely considered essential? eg. a date and time app is a good example - Is it something I like to use, or does it have wide appeal? eg. VLC has much wider appeal than Totem. Personal favorites are not good suggestions unless they have wide appeal and are simple to use whilst looking great. - Just because we are going to DVD size doesn't mean we will include 30 new programs, we must remain 'lite'. What is so far being added. - A new simple mouse theme with changeable cursor size. - Gnome Date and Time - Lite Welcome - Added media check to Live boot menu - Added graphical md5sum check to right click menu - Added libreoffice-gnome to open office files on a NAS - Dropped Mumble - Added inxi - Added 'File Search' (catfish) - Added new wallpapers from https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/index.php?topic=872.msg5415#msg5415 and https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/index.php?topic=989.0 - URL Menu entries now use exo-open instead of xdg-open - Adjusted Screensaver and Power Settings to negate settings conflict Thank you for participating ![]() Re: Linux Lite 2.2 - Software suggestions - anon222 - 11-06-2014 For now I can suggest package gnome-font-viewer for viewing and easy font installing. It's installing fonts in ~/.local/share/fonts Re: Linux Lite 2.2 - Software suggestions - Coastie - 11-06-2014 I would recommend a standard simple backup program, like Deja Dup. 1. This would be simpler than developing one just for Linux Lite. 2. For someone coming from another distro, LL would have a program that would recognize their backups from the other distro. 3. For someone coming from another distro, they would not have to know what individual file to backup from the other distro if LL had a backup program they could install on their distro before installing LL if they weren't already using it. (I think distro hopping is common but they may decide to stay with Linux Lite.) Re: Linux Lite 2.2 - Software suggestions - Wirezfree - 11-06-2014 Hi Valtam, From my perspective, and what I have done in the past few months: Out Of The Box, Standard: Catfish, I think most people will want to find files at some point, and it's lite & simple DejaDup, Backup program, I myself am using DejaDup, but currently testing a bunch of other inc Lucky backup, BackInTime & Timeshift, last 2 are almost like Restore Points in Windows. Something to consider.? inxi, very helpful from the get go if people need help/assistance, people on the forum can just say.. press ctrl-alt-t and then type "inxi ??" and copy the results back For consideration to add in to "Install Additional Software" List: APTIK ~ Allows you to easily save all you main configurations & settings Gigolo ~ Easy to use tool for automatically connecting to PC/NAS Shares, avoid having to edit/change system files. FreeFileSync, Allows you to keep files synchronised across dirs, I have used this for a long time on Windows, now on Linux ![]() Dave Re: Linux Lite 2.2 - Software suggestions - rokytnji - 11-06-2014 mlocate, locate,or slocate. moc, conky-all,mc,link-browser, mplayer2/or mpv. All my suggestions are teeny tiny applications. It won't add much size to the iso. Believe or not. I have used the above to browse the web, find why I cannot boot into a desktop, edit the file needed to get me into a desktop, all through a init 3 cli boot sequence. Most users here won't even use or know how to use the small apps. But some of us long time users find them handy to have. They do not even need to be included in the menu. If these already come in LL2.2. Then that is a good thing. Re: Linux Lite 2.2 - Software suggestions - gold_finger - 11-06-2014 Definitely second vote for inxi program! Extremely useful for informational and support purposes. Personally, I would like to see xfce-terminal replace lxterminal. (Think it's better and more flexible with settings.) Do you mean Font Manager? I can't see a way to install fonts in gnome-font-viewer. Re: Linux Lite 2.2 - Software suggestions - Valtam - 11-06-2014 Coastie, Wirezfree, I agree with having a file searcher ootb. We definitely need a back up program, so I will research this more. 'Locate' is already included. With regards to a system info tool like inxi, we already include System Information (export to html) and Create System Report (exports to txt file). Whats the selling point here on inxi? What do we do with the existing tools? Cheers ![]() Re: Linux Lite 2.2 - Software suggestions - Valtam - 11-06-2014 Note-to-self, still flirting with the idea of including a standalone music player like Tomahawk. Re: Linux Lite 2.2 - Software suggestions - rokytnji - 11-06-2014 inxi -r shows repos being used. inxi --recommends shows what you are missing. Little things like that. inxi -W <areacode or location> xx, shows current weather. $ inxi -W 79772 xx Weather: Conditions: 61 F (16 C) - Overcast Time: November 6, 3:03 PM CST $ locate inxi /usr/bin/inxi /usr/lib/calibre/calibre/gui2/store/stores/xinxii_plugin.py /usr/share/doc/inxi /usr/share/doc/inxi/changelog.Debian.gz /usr/share/doc/inxi/copyright /usr/share/man/man1/inxi.1.gz /var/lib/dpkg/info/inxi.list /var/lib/dpkg/info/inxi.md5sums /var/lib/dpkg/info/inxi.postinst /var/lib/dpkg/info/inxi.preinst as you can see. There is not much to it. |
