Hi,

I'm not at home at the moment so can't check the disk. Not too sure what you mean, though.

Can you expand on the NTFS comment - i.e what is the significance and I'll check it in the morning.

Windows 7 should be formatted NTFS by default... there are other FAT and FAT32 for example, as well as EXT variations and others (exFAT).
I was curious as you said it hung after the update screen ; the next screen is where the disk formatting occurs (see my previous post)... Thought maybe the disk was formatted other than NTFS - - hence hanging on that portion of the install...

My drive was NTFS (Windows), after installing LL (and Mint) I have 2 other EXT4 partitions along with swap..

I did check and can confirm that my hard disk is NTFS. I'm still not sure whether or not that is relevant but it's probably a moot point now.

I did eventually get my system to recognise and boot from a usb (some fiddling around in the BIOS with the Boot System Priority function).

Long story short, though, when booting from the usb the process failed at exactly the same point as when I was attempting a DVD boot (see the saga above).

I'm all out of ideas but thanks anyway for your help.

The drive format was a long shot... Not sure why the installs all fail at the "drive" (partitioning) portion of install..

My only thought would be to partition the drive manually then install LL to that newly created partition..

Research this option and back up your files across all OS's you're partitioning the disk there are risks...

Sometimes the installer's slideshow causes install freeze-ups. Try removing the slideshow before running the installer and see if that solves the problem.

-- Open a terminal and enter this command to remove the slideshow package

-- Close terminal and start the installer
-- Hopefully that solves problem.

That's strange. It should be present. Maybe you typed in command slightly wrong. Try again but use mouse to copy/paste command into the terminal to make sure it's exactly as I typed it.

If for some reason it still shows not present, run this command to see if slideshow program shows up under a different name.

dpkg -l | grep 'slideshow'

It should be "ubiquity-slideshow-xxxx" (xxxx's being either "ubuntu" or something else) and the line it's on should start with an "ii" (which means it is installed on the live environment). If you don't see that, post back with the output of the command for us to see.

Not sure if that makes any sense but there you have it. At that point I closed terminal and tried to run the install. Same result - hanging at the install screen.

I rebooted and went through the above procedures again but - on running your second suggested command - here's what appeared:-

Strange, eh? Well, just to complicate matters further, I tried to launch Firefox and also to go to the forums via the menu (had to reboot between each attempt) but each action caused the screen to go a pinkish grey with diagonal stripes and just freeze for the duration.

At which point I just gave up.

Strange problem you've got there. Don't really know what to think.

It's been a few months, but I vaguely remember having problem trying to install LL 2.6 on one of my old test computers (older than yours) that had never posed a problem with prior LL versions. At the time I didn't bother trying to figure out what was wrong and just ended up loading something else on it for testing. With that said, maybe there is something different about LL 2.6 that is causing the problem for you. Try downloading and installing LL version 2.4 instead and see if that one works. If so, you can just upgrade to LL 2.6 afterwards.
