Title: OneTouch 8100 scanner not recognized...
Post by: glin22 on September 12, 2015, 05:06:53 PM
Hi,

I am trying to get a OneTouch 8100 scanner working with LL but when I try using the Scanner app it just says "scanner not recognized". I also tried GIMP to see if that would be able to use the scanner but nothing comes up in the "create menu".

Not sure what else to do, is there someone here who knows of some things I can try ?

Yes, I know, the scanner is old but the thing has never been used, seems a shame to throw it away.

If you have any ideas or feedback, please let me know.

Thanks,

Glin22

After a bit of searching I found that the OneTouch 8100 usb model was supported in earlier versions of Ubuntu, "Hardy".

http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/hardy/man4/uscanner.4.html

When checking in newer versions I don't find any support. I checked the SANE project and it seems it is not supported by them either.

http://www.sane-project.org/cgi-bin/driver.pl?manu=&model=OneTouch+8100&bus=any&v=&p=

Hope that gives you a place to start, someone with more linux experience may have an idea of how to find and use the older driver.

AVJ,

I didn't know about those resources so thanks for sharing them. I was just curious that if the OneTouch 8100 does work with Hardy, it is the build dependencies in Hardy or is it a different scanner app that's making it work ? I guess it's too simplistic to think I could take the scanner app from Hardy and use it in LL ?

Anyway, thanks for the reply.

From what I found it appeared to have been ported from freebsd to hardy. I would assume that dependencies would be a major issue in getting it to work,  and there may be unpredictable issues with the configuration present in Linux Lite, as it has been pointed out that LL is highly modified from the standard Ubuntu 14.04 that it is based on. I have little to no useful experience with this type of thing so these are my best guesses.

Might help or not.

http://www.openprinting.org/printers (http://www.openprinting.org/printers)

You might find your scanner in there listed with the printers, maybe.

Edit: did a quick scan for OneTouch. No joy. Sorry bout that.

Hello!

I noticed that the 8100 comes in both parallel and USB versions. If youres is parallel, it's ancient, and you might consider upgrading.

Scanners are a hot item in thrift stores. You might be able to get one for under $5, but make sure the power supply comes with it. Unless it's a CanoScan LIDE series scanner (which is powered by the USB port) it won't work without one.

I have a couple of those scanners, and they work GREAT with LL...

Try adding this PPA :

https://launchpad.net/~gnome3-team/+archive/ubuntu/gnome3

for some reason it did work for me with another scanner, it had the dependencies needed
