Ran the Driver install tool from Brother but it didn't give the Device URI as USB. I selected no when asked. Changed it to "usb://Brother/HLL2390DW but still wont see the printer. Checking on the CUPS:631 and it shows as USB now. Checked and the driver is installed. On the CUPS 631 it says to "Add device and driver" I select the device but not sure about the driver?Probably missing something simple but will only mess things up more if I keep farting around.I see three uninstaller scripts in the unzipped folder, not sure if they would be sudo bash etc. or not. I had ran the installer several times over top of the first, probably not helpful.
Starting to wish I had stayed with HP.Any ideas anyone?
Oh running LL 5.2 or 5.4 not sure. :-)

Hello waynebob,
maybe the different installs had conflicted.
Here is how to purge -
https://askubuntu.com/questions/482375/how-to-completely-delete-and-reinstall-a-printer-driver
This page has a tutorial on installing it, it shows how to install differently than specified on the Brother tutorial, it may have some differences worth trying, on the install.

Thanks Bitsnpcs, I looked at the purge instructions and scratched my head. Not helpful at all.
I did the Brother uninstallers instead. got a couple messages about did not remove this or that because of this or that. :-)
Tried the alternate install method and got the same result, didn't work and the printer still shows the Device URI as an ipp instead of USB.Sometimes trying to print a page the printer will spring to life and start spitting out blank pages, I have to stop it, not sure how long it would go. lol.
Thanks anyway, maybe I will try installing it on my spare machine and see if anything different happens. It is a little slower but not scared to break it.I feel a bit like poor Kenneth trying to get going with Google Earth.

Hello waynebob,
I found this link, it is for a different model of Brother printer -
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1167674/finding-device-printers-device-uri-during-driver-installation (https://askubuntu.com/questions/1167674/finding-device-printers-device-uri-during-driver-installation)
It seems to have some information such as -
You enter No and do not enter the URI.
Or
You enter Yes and do enter the URI
You state you entered No and entered the URI, can it be the issue ?
Also on the link -
sudo lpinfo -v
The resultant descriptor has serial # to it after printer name, for identifying ?
-
Hi bitsnpcs, I entered no but still didn't get USB setup.
I tried the same driver installer on my spare machine also with LL 5.2 with the same results.Installed Ubuntu on second HDD on spare machine and the printer was just there automatically. It prints a test page and a document page fine.Scan tries but fails.
I checked the sudo link and it shows this:[sudo] password for linuxlite: file cups-brf:/
network socket
network beh
network lpd
network ipp
network https
file cups-pdf:/
network http
direct hp
network ipps
network smb
serial serial:/dev/ttyS0?baud=115200
Not sure what it means.
My device URI shows this:ipp://HL-L2390DW._ipp._tcp.local/I tried putting in USB in place of the ipp but didn't work.
-
It does not look to be installed.
Example my sudo link -
bitsnpcs@punch-technology:~$ sudo lpinfo -v
[sudo] password for bitsnpcs:
network beh
network ipps
network http
network https
file cups-brf:/
network ipp
direct usb://HP/LaserJet%20M101-M106?serial=VNC4G02127
direct hp:/usb/HP_LaserJet_M101-M106?serial=VNC4G02127
network lpd
network socket
direct hpfax
-
You are fast. :-)
-
Can you change URI to direct usb
-
I had a HP OfficeJet installed before so there may be remnants of HP stuff in there.
I had the HP running for a couple years then did a install on new M.2 drive and has problems.
I had a low ink alarm and saw somewhere that an alarm would cause problems.I was tired of the "maintenance" cycles wasting ink so got this Brother laser. So far no so successful. :-)I tried changing to USB but don't know what to put there.

On the http link it says to look for the line with Brother in it, but your results do not have this line.
1/Does this command show the info you can enter -
sudo lpstat -s
2/The below link shows a workaround for "what is the device URI", on Brother printer, notice how the URI is structured differently, can you manually edit your URI to that structure ? -
https://itectec.com/ubuntu/ubuntu-finding-device-printers-device-uri-during-driver-installation/ (https://itectec.com/ubuntu/ubuntu-finding-device-printers-device-uri-during-driver-installation/)
-
The sudo lpstat -s is : linuxlite ~ sudo lpstat -s
[sudo] password for linuxlite:
system default destination: HLL2390DW
device for HLL2390DW: usb://dev/usblp0
I changed it to the other link, rebooted and still nothing.Wont print test page or self-test page. How do you show your terminal copy/paste, mine is terrible.
The Brother driver page shows how to verify the USB setting, I changed it but no difference.https://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadhowto.aspx?c=ca&lang=en&prod=hll2390dw_us&os=128&dlid=dlf103579_000&flang=4&type3=10283

How do you show your terminal copy/paste, mine is terrible.
I type the word, code , inside a pair of square brackets [ ] , (no spaces between the brackets and word) , then paste the terminal results, then after this I type, /code ,inside another pair of the square brackets.
You can alternatively press the hash button "#" shown above the emoticons 2 times and paste the terminal results between this, you need to then add a / before the word code inside the second pair of brackets (no spaces).
Otherwise anything you type after the code will appear inside the highlighted code box too, as it was not closed as there is no /

Hi firenice03
I didn't get anything when I plugged in the usb cable. I have tried the stuff in the help manual but can't get the right usb address I guess?
The Brother website says this: Depending on the connection type you are using (USB or Network), follow one of the steps below.
(for USB Connection) - Open a web browser and go to "http://localhost:631/printers".
- Check if the Device URI of your printer is "usb://Brother/(your printer's model name)"
If the device URI is different from the example above, please go to "Modify Printer" of your printer to select proper device and driver.
If your printer is not listed on "http://localhost:631/printers", please go to "http://localhost:631/admin" and click "Add printer" and select proper device and driver.
I fooled around on the CUPS page and got nowhere.I tried your troubleshooting link (good find) uninstalled drivers, installed patch then reinstalled drivers.
The last line on the legacy patch said "No such device or address"As usual I don't know if that means anything or not.I have been using LL for several years now and love it. Printers seem to haunt me.Why does Ubuntu see the printer right off the bat and LL doesn't?Oh well, thanks guys will keep monkeying around.

Hi firenice03, I tried everybodys advice several times, looked around Ubuntu and Mint forums and still no luck.
Just now tried your link from Brother about can't print to usb for the third time and it worked. ? Still a win. :-)

Image Scanning Program not working? Failed to open device brother4:bus2;dev1: Invalid argument.
Document Scanner shows ready to scan but Unable to connect to scanner.
My mistake, the scanning works fine. I just realized that I need to turn on the scanner if it has gone into deep sleep.
Thank you for all of your help, Wayne.
