Unfortunately, it acted up again today. Not a big deal though. I'm sure sooner or later some update will fix the problem. Be well.

So far I've had two or three successes in a row. Two on cold boots, another after a long period of the printer being off. It's looking like updating and cleaning up the drivers was the key. Thanks guys!

Mine might be now, too. The only way to know is to watch it for a few days. Thanks.

I checked my HPLIP
Code: [Select]
dave@asus-mini-1:~$ dpkg -l | grep hplip
ii  hplip                                       3.14.3-0ubuntu3.4                       amd64        HP Linux Printing and Imaging System (HPLIP)
ii  hplip-data                                  3.14.3-0ubuntu3.4                       all          HP Linux Printing and Imaging - data files
ii  hplip-gui                                   3.14.3-0ubuntu3.4                       all          HP Linux Printing and Imaging - GUI utilities (Qt-based)
dave@asus-mini-1:~$

Mine is older, but it's working fine now.

I chose Yes to execute the utility, then All to let her rip. I think I saw the bit about HPlip being outdated the first time through, but don't remember choosing to update it. Not sure. Running hp-doctor again says:

Code: [Select]
Current contents of '/var/lib/hp/hplip.state' file:
Plugins are not installed. Could not access file: No such file or directory

Current contents of '~/.hplip/hplip.conf' file:
[installation]
date_time = 11/05/2015 07:58:39
version = 3.14.3

From the date it looks like I did install it. Nothing about HPLIP version being out of date now, yet the link torreydale gave shows 3.15.9 being available. Maybe  the driver version is keyed to the ubuntu version?

O.K,

When I originally had problems, I had a lot of errors, "hp-doctor" cleared them all.
This is my notes from when I ran it, did you make the same choices.??

You will get:
error: This distro (i.e ubuntu xx.xx) is either deprecated or not yet supported.
The diagnosis is limited on unsupported platforms. Do you want to continue?(y=yes, n=no*):
Type “y” and continue.

You may get:
Newer version of HPLIP-3.xx.xx is available.
Press 'y' to continue to upgrade HPLIP-3.yy.yy (y=yes*, n=no):
Type “y” and continue.
You may be told to install HPLIP manually, but it will continue anyway, and check for dependencies.

The next prompts will be:
Do you want to update repository and Install missing/incompatible packages. (a=install all*, c=custom_install, s=skip):
Type “a” and continue.

Found Plugin version mismatch. Press 'y' to re-install the plugin(y=yes*, n=no):
Type “y” and continue.

When you're asked whether to download, specify a path, or quit,
choose the download option by typing “d”.

HP will then ask you to accept the license terms:
Do you accept the license terms for the plug-in (y=yes*, n=no, q=quit) ?
Type "y" if you accept.

hp-doctor will then complete without further prompts.
When complete, exit terminal, re-boot.

I have also encountered the code/tags issue with the font size getting messed up..
I normally select all the text, and resize also.
Also it seems to be throwing in extra line spacing at times..!!

Hi Wirezfree,

I always boot the computer first, because I use the printer only sporadically. That's not going to change, so if I had to I would live with the problem - maybe put a launcher to the Printers on the Panel to make things easier.

That is a very interesting command. I ran it, without rebooting and after turning the printer on, and found:

Code: [Select]
Missing Required Dependencies
-----------------------------
error: 'libdbus-1-dev' package is missing/incompatible
error: 'libcups2' package is missing/incompatible
error: 'openssl' package is missing/incompatible
error: 'python-qt4-dbus' package is missing/incompatible
error: 'libjpeg-dev' package is missing/incompatible
error: 'python-dev' package is missing/incompatible
error: 'gtk2-engines-pixbuf' package is missing/incompatible
error: 'python-qt4' package is missing/incompatible
error: 'libcups2-dev' package is missing/incompatible
error: 'cups-bsd' package is missing/incompatible
error: 'cups-client' package is missing/incompatible
error: 'libsane-dev' package is missing/incompatible
error: 'libusb-1.0.0-dev' package is missing/incompatible
error: 'libcupsimage2-dev' package is missing/incompatible
error: 'libsnmp-dev' package is missing/incompatible
error: 'snmp-mibs-downloader' package is missing/incompatible
error: 'build-essential' package is missing/incompatible
error: 'libtool' package is missing/incompatible

It suggested that I run hp-doctor, which I am doing right now. That brought me to this:

Code: [Select]
Missing Required Dependencies
-----------------------------
error: 'python-qt4-dbus' package is missing/incompatible
error: 'gtk2-engines-pixbuf' package is missing/incompatible
error: 'python-qt4' package is missing/incompatible

Missing Optional Dependencies
-----------------------------
None

Total Errors: 2
Total Warnings: 0

Run 'hp-doctor' command to prompt and fix the issues.

2 errors, down from 15. I'm running hp-doctor again -- I got the same result. It says Trusty Thar is depreciated or not supported. Perhaps that is the problem. I'll watch this for a few days and see if the hp-doctor changes have made a difference.

Thanks much for your insight!

Note: strange, but in editing this post the (forum?) software turned some of the last lines into font so small it looked like a line of dots on the page. I thought the text was lost but only had to resize it. It seems to be associated with invoking the <CODE> tag on existing text.

Hi,

Do you normally have the printer switched on all the time.?
or do switch on printer, then PC.? or switch on PC then printer.?

I had a problem early on with an older HP3070A
It would sometimes not work, now I always switch printer on first, then bootup.

Something to do/check...
> Shutdown PC and turn off printer
> Switch on printer, then turn on PC/Laptop
> When booted open a terminal and do:

Code: [Select]
hp-check -t
It will produces masses of terminal output
What does it say at the end..??, this is my output

Code: [Select]
---------------------------------
| INSTALLED CUPS PRINTER QUEUES |

It's a Deskjet 3510, and I see it's included in that driver since v. 3.12.9. I guess this will have to go on my list, maybe for tomorrow. Thanks torreydale!

I don't know if you have a DesignJet or LaserJet.  But this link http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/release_notes.html shows a newer version of hplip is available over the one in our repository.  But the only 3500 that is affected by an hplip version newer than our repository version is the HP DesignJet T3500 36-in Production eMFP.

This is not a terribly big deal, but lately my HP 3500 printer does not remain in the Enabled state upon rebooting. I'll run a print job, then have to open the Printers dialog and enable the printer almost every first use per session. I've made sure the printer was on and settled before initiating the job, but that changes nothing. Printer is on USB.
