updating from 1.2 to 3.6 on a Windows 10/Linux Lite dual boot
Posted by: moshiachnow - 12-19-2017, 08:24 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (4)

I have a dual boot with an old version of Linux Lite (1.2). I would like to upgrade to 3.6.

I did the installation using the instructions on a YouTube video that has the boot choice controlled by the Windows menu and would like to know how I can upgrade without messing that up.

The way I installed it is detailed in this video:

Any advice/guidance would be appreciated.

  Replacing lost drivers?
Posted by: paul1149 - 12-19-2017, 03:15 PM - Forum: Video Cards - Replies (11)

While dealing with broken packages and many old kernels, I made the mistake of using the -F Autoremove command, and on rebooting saw that I had lost most of the drivers to an Acer laptop: the video, audio and network was absent, and possibly others. Going to LL's Drivers utility showed nothing available. A Synaptics search for "driver" also produced nothing.

I know what to do in Windows - go to Acer.com and find the driver using a machine with a connection, download to a USB stick and install on the broken machine. But how does one do this with Linux? I ended up reinstalling LL from scratch. That's not a very big deal, but I would like to know a better way to deal with missing drivers.

Thanks.

  Chromium browser extension?
Posted by: C0nfused - 12-19-2017, 11:34 AM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (2)

i see this "webhp" on my home page of [google. com / webhp] my home page is set to just google, and it starts there, but if i open a new tab, i get a page with a browser add-on [ it appears] with }" powered by "MW' in a tri-colored circle in the right upper corner and a tracking packing search bar add-on. Seems janky to me. anyone have a clue as to how to remove it? the chromium browser is lots faster than the firefox so i'd like to keep usinf\g it, but dont trust that apparent add-on.

Plank Docklets Opening Wrong apps in LL 3.6
Posted by: Mart - 12-18-2017, 11:52 PM - Forum: Other - No Replies

After hearing that Xubuntu xfce might run a bit quicker than my ever trusty LL, I dual-booted Xubuntu to find out. Can confirm that a few apps run a bit quicker at start-up – file manager, firefox, libreoffice, etc  - but once I fully loaded my Xubuntu-core install with my favorite apps, the performance differences between the two Ubuntu-based distros are marginal to say the least and nothing to write home about – although, that said, boot-up and shutdown were certainly quicker in Xubuntu.

But that’s not why I’m posting today. You see, to make the comparison between the two distros as accurate as I could, I also themed them exactly the same adding Plank Dock on both. Plank installed and ran perfectly on Xubuntu but surprisingly is quite buggy on my LL 3.6.

Oddly, in my usually trusty LL, the Plank trash docklet inexplicably opens a sign-in window for ‘usr/scripts/updates-gui’  (not sure if it’s asking for root permission), and equally oddly the Plank terminal docklet opens Htop, although of course Htop uses the terminal to display, so that malfunction is a bit less inexplicable, but still unexplainable to me.

So my question to all you good people in LL Land is - How can I fix these issues? I’ve already completely uninstalled and re-installed Plank twice, but no change regarding the malfunctioning docklets. Is there a configuration file I can access to resolve these issues, or a way to correct the problem through a terminal command or two. Failing this, I’ve downloaded the Plank_0.11.1.orig.tar.xz file from Plank’s Launchpad site  (I’ve only installed Plank through the terminal so far) in the hope that doing a clean install of Plank using the tar.xz package might make Plank work correctly, but I‘m not sure how to install the .tar file – instructions, please - anyone?

P.S. - Installed Lite-Tweaks in Xubuntu 16.04.3 - It runs great!

External Display plug-n-play in LL & other Ubuntu-based distros, revisited ...
Posted by: m654321 - 12-18-2017, 06:09 PM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (15)

In September 2017, I posted a question asking if instant plug-n-play capability for external monitors could be developed in LL (see https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/sugge.../#msg35043).

My own experiments showed that Manjaro and PCLinuxOS could instantly plug-n-play with either our Samsung TV monitor or with two other displays (Dell & Hanns G).  However, LL and all the Ubuntu-based distros that I've tried, did not instantly plug-n-play; instead you need to fiddle around with settings, e.g. which one is required as the primary display and whether mirror displays are required or not, etc, which is time consuming and a bit complicated.

Jerry suggested that the issue might be kernel related as, at the time, Manjaro & PCLinuxOS were using kernel 4.6, while LL still had 4.4.  To test this idea, I did the following two things:

(1) Upgraded kernel from 4.4 to 4.6 then 4.9 for LL: still no plug-n-play with external monitor
(2) Downgraded kernel from 4.9 or 4.6 to 4.4 with Manjaro & PCLinuxOS: plug-n-play capability maintained

Therefore, I concluded that the lack of instant-plug-n-play capability of LL (or other Ubuntu-based distros) with external displays was not due to the kernel.

My question therefore, thinking about LL's future, is as follows ...
Would it be possible to develop external display plug-n-play capability in LL, even though this feature appears to be absent in its Ubuntu 'parent' ?  Such a feature would be really useful.

Many thanks for any feedback.

Terminal - how to exit fullscreen
Posted by: Sprintrdriver - 12-17-2017, 09:52 PM - Forum: Desktop Customization - Replies (2)

Hi.

Just decided to install Linux Lite to replace xubutu on an older laptop. During live-cd session (yes, need to backup some stuff before I go ahead on install) I have used Terminal / rsync in order to backup some files. However I stumbled over this really stupid issue. I made terminal fullscreen, but cannot get the way out, so to speak.

Found some Linux forums various places on the internet where people have asked similar question using some variant of Ubuntu, where hotkeys like F11, Ctrl+Alt+Enter was mentioned as solution. However none of those works in Linux Lite terminal window.

Therefore - my question: How do I get out of full screen terminal window - whitout exit?

Thanks

Best/safest option to wipe a donated computer before installing LL 3.4
Posted by: JanetBiggar - 12-17-2017, 08:46 AM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (9)

I have just been donated an older Toshiba laptop that the donor has not wiped.  I would like opinions on which is the safest erasure process (for the donor's information) that should be performed such that I can place it with a youth with little risk to the donor.

Yes, I know backing the car up over the computer is a sure fire way to secure his data  Wink  However I'm not considering this as an option.

I would prefer to simply wipe and install LL from the bootable USB as this is far faster than using DBAN first.  I am certainly comfortable using DBAN first, after checking that LL 3.4 runs fine on this computer, should DBAN be deemed the best option.

Trying to find a software to have more settings for my Wacom tablet. SOLVED
Posted by: chaotikcrow - 12-16-2017, 12:51 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (1)

I did research and so far I can't find anything, I looked inside the Mouse and Touchpad but there's nothing useful, I'm using  a intuos Pro and the issue I have for now is I run my PC with two monitors and it's using both of them, and I want to be able to change the shortcuts for the buttons on the tablet. If any questions let me know, thank you.

EDIT I used xsetwacom, it works well I just need to find a way to save it so that I don't have to always paste the command in the terminal.
