Thanks technomancer

I have a small addition to this that won't affect many people but is useful for those that are:

If you power your wireless controller via USB (like if your battery is dead) you need to make sure that it isn't plugged in before you activate the driver otherwise you just get an error.

I have my Xbox360 wireless controller working without issue after following the instructions listed in the link below.
http://www.noobslab.com/2014/08/configure-xbox-controller-on-your.html

Here are the instructions if you don't want to link->

Terminal Commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:rael-gc/ubuntu-xboxdrv
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-xboxdrv
sudo service xboxdrv restart

USE this to configure---> jstest-gtk     ---OR see below !

I had my wireless receiver connected as i did the above commands and it worked immediately.
It was the last one in the list for me, 4th. I had to remap some buttons.
<>I will update this post with mappings that worked for me.

How to create Joystick settings desktop shortcut
Here is how to create a desktop shortcut to the settings for the joystick-
1. Right click the desktop and a menu pops up.
2.Move mouse pointer to- create launcher and left click on it.
3.In the name feild put- joystick config
4.In the command feild put-   xterm jstest-gtk
5.Then left click- create button
* A dialog will appear asking what you want to do with it. Click --- make executable
* After you change mapping etc, be sure to save profiles to make it persistent.

If you want an icon for it that looks approriate just do this->
1.Left click on the icon
2.Left click-  properties
3.A window opens, the picture of the icon is available to Left click on. Click on that.
4.In the "select icon from" drop down menu select "Device Icons"
5.Scroll down to "input-gaming-symbolic" it looks like a game controller.
6.Click on "OK", window goes away then click "close"
Done

I hope this helps everyone playing games or using Steam with a Xbox360 wireless controller that came from Windoze.
