Title: LL 3.0 - restart button, add printer problems, mouse cursor
Post by: mdavies5 on June 02, 2016, 09:00:20 PM
Congratulations on V3.0. Everything I have tested works fine but just 3 problems you might like to know about.
1. I cannot find a 'Restart' button. The icon in the menu is just a logout option. Adding the applet to the panel offers 'logout', 'shutdown' etc but not 'restart'. The only way to restart is to logout and then restart form the menu on the login panel. Am I missing the obvious?
2. The printer problem is common to all Ubuntu distros I have tested. IT applies to Epson XP310. The installer identifies the printer and finds a driver. I accept the license, message "Installing Driver" then takes me back to the driver search screen. This behaviour repeats over and over. Has anybody else encountered this with any printer? I am surprised that the Printer installer is not included in the Settings Manager as it is with most other distros.
3. My mouse cursor disappears, particular if I logout or lock screen and then return. If I logout again and login the cursor has returned.
4. One observation, that is purely subjective, is the default theme and window settings. The Title bar merges with the panel and other windows. It is difficult to identify to click and move a window. I solve this by using the Moheli window style.

Log out gives a Restart option in the upper middle row.

I installed LL 3 yesterday and also had my cursor disappear, (64 bit)
On trying to see if it was a software problem or if it was something I had done, I managed too dis enable my touchpad (definitely my fault ha ha) Having to use a mouse.

Otherwise seems as impressive as normal :)

When I install a new upgrade, I always have a couple of days trying too push it to its limits and try things I normally wouldn't, then do a total new install, as it only takes minutes.

I'll continue pushing it, today, do a fresh install tomorrow, and report back.

BTW thanks to all :)

Thanks Torreydale, but I never get to see this window in 3.0. The menu item in 2.8 produced it but the same menu in 3.0 just logs you out; as specified in the tooltip.
It looks like a design change.

Quick workaround for disappearing mouse cursor:

Ctrl+Alt+F1
then
Ctrl+Alt+F7

Hope this helps.

Try going Menu > Settings > Session and Startup on the General tab make sure 'Prompt on Logout' is checked.
That setting turns that window with the options on and off.

Hello, first post on this site. First time using Linux Lite, long time Linux user.

I'm on 3.0 and also have the disappearing cursor issue. As user neptune33 mentioned, I do the Ctrl+Alt+F1 then Ctrl+Alt+F7 workaround, works for me.
I don't have the issue with the restart button missing, its been there since install two days ago. Cool OS! Using it on my Samsung R480 laptop.

The work around works but its so annoying.....I find out that others debian based distros are having the same problem....If LL do not address this issue very soon I'll have no other option but go back to Mint.

If you're ok without a lock screen...
Disabling "Lock Screen when system is going for sleep" in Power Manager and/or
Disabling "Lock on Suspend" in Lite Locker
and setting "Automatically lock the session" to never in Power Manager

- disabling/enabling one should repeat in the other, but once disable the system will wake from sleep with the cursor still visible.. BUT it will wake to the desktop (no lock)..

Its another work around option for the time being..

This was a good option too...... btw do you guys know whats causing this to happen ?? it the kernel or what?

The workaround from F1 to F7 is simply handing off the mouse control to the operating system. It is an OEM EFI CSM SMM problem as I noted before, not a linux lite kernel problem. On some ASUS boards F1 is enough, as it initiates the handoff. If you can bring up a shell in EFI you can change the bin in the SMM, but that depends on your hardware version. Samsung is the most common offender with this issue. Check your OEM for version modifications, and RHEL. I haven't looked for the RHEL solutions for a while but I bet there is one. You will probably have to enable RPM functions in synaptic to use and compile the RHEL file, which is probably by the way OEM hardware specific. If you want to be careful adding RPM functions to synaptic use Alien to convert them to Deb, or a Porteus convert to Deb app.

??? UEFi issue? It can be replicated on a 32bit LL3.0 (non uefi)...
No issues with 2.2 thru 2.8 only occurred in 3.0
- Not saying it not relative to the items quoted and would agree not with the kernel but perhaps more with XFCE, Lite-Locker or a screen lock setting of sorts...
Similarly to the "black screen" after hibernate of previous..

Just my plugged nickel...

I think I have found a solution to the cursor disappearing after sleep.
I found this here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/1568604/+index?comments=all

Essentially it involves updating the video driver as described here: https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/ubuntu/graphics-drivers

This is what I did:
In terminal:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo reboot

et voila the cursor now appears after sleep.

My system:
System:
Kernel: 4.4.0-21-generic i686 (32 bit) Desktop: Xfce 4.12.3 Distro: Ubuntu 16.04 xenial
Machine:
Mobo: Dell model: CN0Y53 v: A04 Bios: Dell v: A04 date: 06/22/2009
CPU(s):
Single core Intel Atom N270 (-HT-) speed/max: 800/1600 MHz
Graphics:
Card: Intel Mobile 945GSE Express Integrated Graphics Controller
Display Server: X.Org 1.18.3 drivers: intel (unloaded: fbdev, vesa)
Resolution: [email protected]
GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel 945GME x86/MMX/SSE2 GLX Version: 1.4 Mesa 11.2.0

YMMV

Wish I knew this four days ago.  On Friday, I reverted my laptop to LL2.8 64bit for this very reason.  The ctrl-alt-F1 and ctrl-alt-F7 workaround was becoming inconvenient for me.

I'll go ahead and jinks myself..
BUT I haven't had to use the work around for a while and actually forgot about it.. But I've turned off all the locking features...

I may try enabling locks, to initiate the problem and test blinkingbee's fix +1 on the share :)

Thx man....I was just about to unistall LL3.0....luckily you came for the rescue .... funny that DEV seems to not mind people ditching his OS for something so easily fixable and yet so complicated for non-programmers.... no wonder LL has fallen down so much on distrowatch.

Le000,

It might be too soon to start throwing rocks.

Furthermore, following your Distrowatch logic, Slackware, openSUSE, CentOS, and Arch are higher on the list because they're less complicated for non-programmers than Linux Lite.  Must be frustration talking.  You can't really believe that.

No worries, I'll just add every graphics driver PPA in existence to the next LL  ???

SEE below. This is not a linux lite or any other linux system issue. Have you tried other distros and have you had the same issue on them ?
If you have and the issue does not happen, maybe you could post your hardware config and mouse configuration to see what is different and it can be either fixed or added to linux lite. Give us info and we can help you, and at the same time, improve linux lite !  8)
