I think that would be expected behaviour if you had used the grub loader earlier to manually select version 4.4.0-201 to back out the problem caused by the 202 kernel.  Grub remembers any manual selection and uses it on subsequent boots until you change your preference.

Weird...

I updated today from 4.4.0-201 to -204 and when I rebooted it was still operating on -201. I had to go into the Grub Loader Menu and select Advanced Options and manually change it to -204.
We only get one shot at this thing called life, let's make the best of it.

I installed kernel 4.4.0.203 on my Acer Aspire One, four packages using Install Updates (LL is the only OS on that little machine). Then I cleaned up using Lite Tweaks, which I think is an excellent application. Then I tested firing up my other essential applications: Install/Remove Software, Firefox, Chromium, Backups, Systemback and Calibre. No errors observed, so I will stay on this latest kernel until proven otherwise. But lessons learned:
  • If you see linux-generic packages in Install Updates, get out and install other packages using Install/Remove Software. Install the kernel on its own.
  • Make Restore Points and ISO images before updates. I back up ISO images on an external hard drive.
Any other hints? I am sorry to see support go for 32 bits. My 320Gb of disk space are not ready for recycling.

Oh, it's 203 alright:

 -Version-
Kernel      : Linux 4.4.0-203-generic (i686)
Compiled      : #235-Ubuntu SMP Tue Feb 2 02:51:00 UTC 2021
C Library      : Unknown
Default C Compiler      : GNU C Compiler version 5.4.0 20160609 (Ubuntu 5.4.0-6ubuntu1~16.04.12)
Distribution      : Linux Lite 3.8

I may update the P4 box someday, but so long as firefox works on the netbook that's all I use it for anyways.

@Frobozz and others..

Note 203 may not yet be available on your repo (could take a few for it to replicate)..  I use the USA repo and it did not..

Using the process I explained in my prior post - I did not receive a 2nd attempted update to 202 thought maybe pulled from repo's but sound as if others may have (in VM's)
I'm still on my previous 177..

Not fixed for me.  :(

Took a fresh 3.8 install on VirtualBox and let it update today.

Actually, it did run FF 85 ONCE, and OS asked to reboot so I let it. Now FF dead.

Originally the problem was it did nothing, now I get the spinning cursor only it stops spinning.

Can't access the menu, so I guess it's locked up.

On my netbook, I'm going to continue using the fresh install, only update the Firefox.

EDIT: Gave the VM machine 2 CPUs and FF ran. Can't do that with the netbook or P4 box....
Actually, when you give a VM a second core you must enable "I/O APIC" and that's what seemed to do it.
(Still not gonna mess with the netbook)

Just downloaded and installed updates on my 3.8 machine.  As well as the kernel firefox got an update to 85.0.

Booted with the new kernel and Firefox started ok.

So it was indeed a kernel bug and looks like they've fixed it.
Without each others help there ain't no hope for us :)

@stevef @Frobozz @LinuksLajt @tek10 @GregO I created a VM and installed Linux Lite 3.8 32 bits in it. I have another one but that's a 64bit. I just checked available updates and there's a new kernel version available: 4.4.0.203.209

I haven't upgraded the OS because it's a bunch, around 500mb and will take some time, so I can tell whether this new kernel won't cause any issues like the one you're experiencing, but it might be worth to try.

Obviously your second option of waiting with 4.4.0-194 is working for you.
The benefits of 4.4.0-201 over -194 might not be worth the effort.
The impending end of support for 3.8 is also a factor to consider.

Provided you have enough resources including time, boot media, working restore points and back ups to get you out of potential trouble you could try Synaptics (Install/Remove Software) to get a -201 kernel if you cleaned 201 after installing 4.4.0-202.  Personally, I would duplicate my working disk to an external disk before proceeding using Clonezilla. If 4.4.0-201 will download and install then the assumption is that it can be made bootable using Lite Tweaks.

1) open Synaptics package manager
2) filter for 201-generic
3) mark the linux-image-4.4.0-201-generic, linux-modules-4.4.0-201-generic, linux-headers-4.4.0-201-generic, linux-modules-extra-4.4.0-201-generic packages
4) apply

The preceding posts are about booting from a specific kernel already on the machine. Using Install/Remove Software I can selectively install the latest versions of other packages while avoiding linux-generic-4.4.0.202. And Lite Tweaks works fine, but it shows only one installed kernel, 4.4.0.194 (from a restore point). Normally I clean all the old packages with Lite Tweaks. Since 4.4.0.201 works fine, according to a previous post, how do I get that as a bootable kernel, while avoiding the faulty latest one? Or do I just wait for 4.4.0.203, make a restore point, and hope that the bugs are fixed?

No problem.  Although apt-mark didn't work the way we thought it would I was able to use the grub load selection easily enough to revert to 4.4.0.201.

The Acer One with all the kernels is not used regularly and the reason for having so many older kernels is mainly due to my lack of time (and laziness).

I try to keep my primary laptop and desktop machines a bit tidier.

Sorry to read that it didn't work. If you don't mind me asking, why do you keep so many kernels? You can keep 3 at most, you don't need that many, you have 8! They're not being used or anything related to them anyway. You might want to remove some of those and keep the last 3, just saying.

'version' in my post wasn't actually what I used in the command.
EDIT to correct typing error

I ran the command to hold the actual kernel version I wanted to keep hoping to avoid 4.4.0.202 - there were no error messages.  Checked it and it looked ok.

Code: [Select]
stephen@LL-AO722:~$ apt-mark showhold
linux-headers-4.4.0-201-generic
linux-image-4.4.0-201-generic
linux-modules-4.4.0-201-generic
linux-modules-extra-4.4.0-201-generic
stephen@LL-AO722:~$

Then ran updates from the GUI and the machine went ahead and installed 4.4.0.202

Extract from the log

Moltke - I couldn't get 'apt-mark hold version' to work.  Have you tried it ?

What do you mean "you couldn't get 'apt-mark hold version' to work"? What error did you get? I haven't tried in this particular case because; 1, I don't use LL 3.8 and 2, I don't have this kind of issue, sorry. However, I've used "apt-mark hold" a few times when needed, and it's always worked. Are you using the right command:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-mark hold
If by any chance you did sudo apt-mark hold version no wonder it didn't work cause that's not it. If that's the case, try again with something like
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-mark hold linux-image-linuxlite-4.4.0.201
Change the kernel version, so it matches the one you're currently using.  When time comes and it's safe to upgrade it, just "unhold" it
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-mark unhold linux-image-linuxlite-4.4.0.201
Without each others help there ain't no hope for us :)
