Tried to run Install Updates from the menu. Has some sort of error message and that I was supposed to run some command line program. What I really got out of the message was that the window was going to close and it did before I could get down all the information on what it was suggesting I do.
Couldn't you make the window close on me hitting the enter key or something so I could take down the message.
So, what do I do now? Re-install the whole thing and pray?
-
Open a terminal and run this command:
sudo apt-get update
That will likely produce same errors and terminal window will stay open. Copy/paste relevant errors back to forum.
-
I tried to run "install updates" like I do every morning. But today after entering my password I got this line..
synaptic: no process found.
Never got this before...do I have a problem or are there just no updates?
-
Hi - Just had the same error - then I run the beta GUI updater I have installed - more errors - restarted and now all back to normal - Not sure if what I did helped but does seem to be ok again now.

Thanks Kurt..where do I get the GUI updater?
-
Theres a thread about it on here somewhere - but as its a Beta i wont recommend it - maybe wait and see if someone else posts about this issue ?

I had the same problem with Install Updates. Ran above command in terminal and got
will@will-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get update

Thank You Scott

You must update manual to fixx this.
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
There was a bug in the update
Oh WYSIWYG editor works on this smartphone. 8)

@ Coastie, Dana Marsee and Kurt,
I don't have any idea what caused your errors. Just ran updates myself a minute ago to see if same thing would happen to me and it all went fine. Maybe there just happened to be some server side problem at time you tried to update. Try again. If still have problem, follow Scott(0)'s link and see if that info helps. (Edit: misko_2083 just posted before I finished writing. Try his suggestion first, then Scott's links.)
@ maccool,
If you're still around, try what I recommended first before following above links. You may not have same problem as others.

Hi Thanks it seems to be working fine now again…
I sometimes get errors when trying to update Windows ( sorry for the bad language )
But Linux Lite is Far more important to me hence why I posted ..
Regards
Kurt

I just tried the usual "install updates" and everything went fine. Not sure what fixed it...I rebooted earlier and that didn't help. I think the server side problem may be correct. All is well now though. Thanks everybody.

You can actually just run Menu, Favorites, Install Updates to get the new update which has some checks in it (thank you misko). The previous Update script had some code in it to close synaptic and gdebi, so you got an 'error' because they weren't actually running. Now we have a properly scripted check that won't produce any errors. This will put an end I hope to threads where new folk can't run updates because they have a package manager open at the same time.
Hope this is clear to all :)

... open a terminal and run:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

Thanks. That fixed it. Ran Install Updates afterward and it worked but of course it said I was up to date. ;D

I get this error when using install updates.
Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/hydr0g3n/qbittorrent-stable/ubuntu/dists/trusty/main/binary-i386/Packages (http://ppa.launchpad.net/hydr0g3n/qbittorrent-stable/ubuntu/dists/trusty/main/binary-i386/Packages) 404 Not Found
Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
Not finding anything named hydr0g3n via CLI, or Synaptic I decided to use Synaptic for a complete removal of qbittorent , the error still occurs.
I tried past week all of the UK mirrors in Synaptic, all produce this error, then re-tried install updates (after closing synaptic for each mirror), I got 20 something updates from my isp mirror, but still this error too.
On the UK Ubuntu mirror, I then ran in CLI
sudo apt-get upgrade
This done a quite scarey 88 updates including lots mentioning the dreaded Plymouth and lightdm, and many codecs for Chromium which I don't have installed and never have had installed (or Chrome).
After restart it still functions as usual (the computer) which I was doubtful of during the updates as the updates seemed to be for someone else computer.
Using install updates after this upgrade still produces the same error.
I realize the error is because hydr0g3n is no longer hosted and so produces the 404 error, it came down as a regular update, can anyone give me some help please on -
how to find and remove hydr0g3n from the system to stop the error occuring ?
-
bitsnpcs,
You can get rid of or disable the repo in one of two ways.
- Open file manager as root and navigate to /etc/apt/sources.list.d/. Find the text file for that repo and delete it if you want to get rid of it completely. Or, open that repo text file and put a "#" (without the quotes) at the beginning of the line to deactivate it.
- Open Synaptic Package Manager and go to Settings -> Repositories -> Other Software (tab). Find the repo and either delete it or uncheck box next to it if you just want to deactivate it.
Updates should be back to normal after that.
-
Thank You gold_finger :)
-
Hello gold_finger,
I have done this now, following your tutorial, I used the first method, open file manager as root and deleted the text files for that repo. There were 2 of them .list and .save for hydr0g3n.
I then done the updates, and as you said they would be, they are back to normal now :)
-
Forgot about the ".save" file -- I think it's just a backup copy of the other. Don't think it gets triggered during updates so wouldn't have caused problems if you did leave it. (But makes more sense to delete both as you did.)
Glad it worked out.
