Title: How Long Would Lite 3.0 be supported?
Post by: mdiemer on February 12, 2020, 05:01:28 PM
I recently installed Lite 3.0 because of video driver issues (see my thread on that under Video section). Basically, my on-board graphics work better with Nvidia than Nouveau drivers. Lite 3.0, as well as other Ubuntu 16.04 distros, will allow me to install the Nvidia driver (304). But if I update to newer kernels that come with the point-updates, somewhere along the line Nvidia won't work anymore and I have to use Nouveau. So far I have tried updating Lubuntu 16.04 and that's what happened, bye bye Nvidia drivers.

So, if I stay on Lite 3.0, or I figure out I can use say 3.2 and still have Nvidia working, how long will I have support? The full 5 years, regardless of what point version or kernel I have? I ask because with Lubuntu, they tell me I have to update to the latest one to get the full five years. But I believe Lubuntu has a different release plan than most distros based on Ubuntu. But I just wanted to clarify this.

Thanks,

Mike

@mdiemer  - the roadmap.. https://www.linuxliteos.com/download.php#roadmap (https://www.linuxliteos.com/download.php#roadmap)

So at for 3.8 until April of 2021..

I would try to do the Lite Upgrade to 3.8 and see how it runs..

Make a Systemback - backup of current state, if not happy you can revert back easy enough.
- I'm still running 3.8 on the mini :)

Thanks, I appreciate the help. I have now figured out which kernel is the last one Nvidia 304 driver will work on: 4.4. I booted that kernel last night on Lubuntu and it allowed me to install the driver. So, now the question is, how long is that kernel supporetd? I do plan on keepiong an eye out for a cheap card, but in the meantime will use the 4.4 kernel.

You can use that kernel (4.4) on any LL system..
Use Lite Tweaks, kernel install...
If I recall, upgrading from 3.0 to 3.8 would keep the same kernel version as on 3.0...

Could test.. have a system back to roll if not or tweaks for the preferred. .

I just upgraded to Lite 3.8, all went well, and the system is still using Nvidia drivers. So I have Lite 3.8 until April 2021.

Incidentally, I have posed this on the Ubuntu forum as well, as I've been testing Lubuntu 16.04. Morgae of that forum answered thus:

"Re: Lubuntu 16.04 and Nvidia drivers.
The Nvidia 6150SE n430 is a special case and the problem is exactly as you describe: Most Geforce cards of the same age run fine with Nouveau but this one needs Nvidia closed source drivers which are not supported by newer kernels."

Which supports my feeling that this video chipset does better on Nvidia drivers.

Thank god for Lin ux Lite. Of all the 16.04 'buntu systems I've been testing, only it works flawlessly, can use the Nvidia drivers, and is supported until 20212 April. You guys are the best.
