removing .desktop files solves this
Hm,one file stays in /etc/skel/.local/share/applications/
The other one stays in ~/.local/share/applications
once you remove both files it doesn't show up in the whisker menu

This works! Thanks.  ;)

Thanks!  It would have taken me quite a while to find .desktop files in /etc/skel/.

I also have a problem removing menu items.  In Synaptic, I removed Mumble and Leafpad, but entries for them still appear on the Whisker Menu and on the Xfce standard menu.  The entries do not appear in MenuLibre or in Alacarte, so I can't remove them using a menu editor.  Their .desktop files are no longer in /usr/share/applications, so I don't know where they are lurking.  I tried reinstalling both applications and removing them again using Remove Completely in Synaptic, but they still show up on the Whisker Menu and the Xfce menu, without their icons.  Does anyone have any idea where else I need to look to find the files from which the menus are creating these entries, or how else to remove them?  Thanks.

Colin,
Not sure if you want to permanently delete LibreOffice but if you do then uninstalling it in Synaptic Package Manager should do the trick.

I removed Wine which leaves a lot of dead Menu Items . Most of them I deleted individually using >Settings > Menu > (Left Click ) Delete .-------- Is there any better way

I removed Libre Office and had to remove its dead Items

I (foolishly) tried Restore system configuration ---now in the Office Menu there are 3 Libre Office options which only give an error message as Office is gone .
When I check in the Office Menu Settings box the 3 Libre Office items are not available to un-tick .

Can they be removed easily - I tried a web search without finding the same scenario using the Wisker Menu . What I did glean, as usual with Linux the config files appear to be spread about and the whole subject is not average-user friendly

If its easy to solve let me know but if not do not do not worry --I can easily turn a blind eye to the problem -- its easy for me as I have one good eye !
