Toshiba Portege R700
Lite 5.0
I use FBReader a great deal and I have the version 0.12.10dfsg2-4bu installed from the repository.
When reading an epub book the application inserts a hyphen after every word before the space.
No amount of fiddling with the settings changes this.
I have a similar setup on a Satellite Pro running MX and FBReader (version 0.12.10dfsg2-3) renders the text perfectly.
My old 32bit D420 runs Lite 3.8 and FBReader works as it should.
I've just learned that the developer no longer supports Linux and that version 12 is old software, I've also read that Ubuntu 20 has dropped qt4 which may explain something.
Has anyone else experienced this?

From what I know, all distros are about to drop Qt4 support.
Even in the programming community the support for Qt4 is rendered only for legacy and using Qt4 is discouraged.
Maybe it would be better to find a new App for this purpose.
Do a search with "Linux ebook readers" or "Best Linux ebook readers".

I tested Calibre, but for my needs, it is too complex. Still... If you used FBReader, I guess the "next-in-keen" would be Calibre. :)

I have used Calibre quite a bit in the past and it seems to work well once you get the hang of it. It works well as far as writing books in epub format too, though I have leaned over a little lately to using the epub extension set for LibreOffice.

I've tried quite a few ebook readers and found that Calibre is the best one. You should give it a try sudo apt-get install calibre

Yes, Calibre works but in my opinion it's overblown and tries to do too many things which I don't need. FBReader is great for just reading books selected from your own folders. It looks like I'll have to put up with hyphens everywhere or learn to use calibre - unless I can find another ebook reading appilcation as good as FBR.

I dont use an e-reader much, but gonna throw my plugged nickle in for Calibre ..
Because its in Lite Software, if its in Lite Software the Devs and Community like it :) ...
From Menu - type Lite Software - enter password and install...

I have Calibre installed, I just prefer the lighter simpler FBReader. The general consensus seems to be heading in the direction of "stop carping and put up with the hyphens or learn to love Calibre, " so that's what I'll do. I know it makes sense.

Unfortunately those that responded either like myself - haven't used or its what they know... :)
Maybe if someone comes across this post that use another they'll chime in..
AND if you should find something more suitable - come back and post... If its good fit, maybe it could be a replacement in Lite Software... :)

Calibre isn't that difficult, it is a bit "bloated" with lots of options cause it's not only an ebook reader but you can edit and create them with it too but I don't think that's a bad thing.
Here's a quick & short HOWTO to get you started:
1. Click on menu and search for calibre, click on it or hit enter to launch it, on the first run you'll se a window like this

2. Do your changes as needed in language and/or the location for the library, or if you're fine with the defaults just click next. In the next window you can set the type of device to use

3. Change it if you need to or click next if defaults are fine for you. The last window will give you the chance to visit some useful links, click on one of those if you're interested, otherwise just click on finish

4. On calibre's main window click on Add books and choose one the options from the drop-down menu, usually choosing the add from directories and sub-directories is enough, unless you need otherwise this is the safest and easiest way.

5. A new window will pop up for you to tell calibre where your ebooks are in your pc so it can add them to its library and be available the next time you open calibre, so you only have to do this once, unlike fb reader where you have to look for them each and every single time you launch it, oh yes, I used it too and stopped using because of this very annoying (un)feature, by the way, Fbreader's android version is little bit better. Also, if you see the below window just click yes and procced; navigate to the location of your ebooks library/collection, select the containing folder and click OK to add them to calibre.

6. Now that calibre's library is completely set up, you can choose whatever ebook from it and to start reading it, click on View from the menu and select one of the options available, usually selecting view with calibre e-book viewer is enough, but if you need/want to try something else is up to you, i.e, you could click on View and select Read a random book

7. Calibre's option will be added to the right-click context menu, so from now on you can select a file that calibre supports; pdf, epub, mobi, azw3 and open it by selecting open with >> e-book viewer

I am an idiot. At your suggestion I went searching for a light replacement for FBReader and I found what seemed ideal. A recently created, fully supported and updated, application. I downloaded the .deb and installed it, it's lightweight and fast, it's also already installed! Foliate has been sitting there in amongst the office applications ever since I installed Lite 5.0, I just hadn't noticed it. Pity my poor old eyes.
I've just tried it and it seems to be ideal for my purposes.
My sincere apologies for wasting everyone's time and thanks to all concerned.

Thank you, I had Calibre set up but I just preferred not to use it and I've just uninstalled it together with FBReader.
I think that the length of your post may be seen as reinforcing my dislike of Calibre but I appreciate your time.

No kidding LOL -- I didnt know that - I looked on my 4.8 and didnt see "Foliate" maybe its new in 5(LibreOffice)... But now we know :)
