Title: Do I really need Samba?
Post by: elelme on May 28, 2017, 12:48:12 PM
Like a few others here, I am older and need it simply-stated. Having read about the Samba vulnerabi-
lity and realizing I am now 100% Linux Lite, I have to wonder how important Samba would be for me.
Could I just UNINSTALL it, and remove any potential problems? When would I need Samba if not dual-
booting with Windows?

Sorry if this is one of those 'stupid questions.' Also hope this was the best place to post this.

Hello,

I am unsure if it would be good to uninstall it as it comes as part of the LL distro.
I have read on Ubuntu forums where uninstalling software was okay but it said not a good idea to uninstall parts that are from the distro.
I think you would be best only to attempt to remove with support from the developers to do this correctly, and to not cause potential for issues in the distro.

I mean if you developed a something and it needed a component then it is not likely you will support removing that component, as it kind of says you didn't need to add it to begin with etc, and when developing especially for a Lite project you wouldn't add things not needed.

I think I just wouldn't use it until the vulnerability is patched.  Merely having it installed is no risk.  The risk is in linking with a Windows computer that is vulnerable.

If you want the option to remove Samba and you will NEVER use it:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove --purge samba

To a real layperson, such as myself,  what does SAMBA do, and would I miss it if I removed it.  LL only machines, no twin boot.

I think it has been fixed already.

Samba lets yoou share files and stuff across a network, like if there's another computer in the house and it runs Windows, you can remotely access files and peripherals (like printers) using Samba - assuming you know the passwords and stuff of the other machine.

Well, I now don't feel so goofy for asking. Several answers that gives me all the info
I really need. THANKS, folks, for this.  And I am relieved to know that if I don't have
to use this, it is safe to leave Samba in the distro. A friend had UBUNTU and found he
didn't have SAMBA included in his distro, so it prompted the question, which is now
answered. This is SOLVED.
