Checking SMART data can be wise action just in case you have faulty HDD.

Thanks to all who replied. I've been trying the various suggestions but, so far, without any luck.
I guess I'll just re-type the documents.

I also want to say, as someone who has so little to contribute to the forum's knowledge base, that I really appreciate all the help I've been given on various topics by so many members.

LL forums are the best.

Your older system may have saved the files in a temporary format that your file manager does not normally recognize. Your best bet before you do any more damage is to try scalpel, but make sure you use the right version for your system. See the post at the link below and look toward the end of it.

If you haven't closed the doc, have you tried UNDO (ctrl+z) to undo what you may have done?
You may have inadvertently slid across the trackpad swiping most..??...

Can try a search / find to see if files are saved else where.

I could see wiping out a file - but not "deleting" a file - unless you were in the folder and your cat ran across the keyboard - LOL

If you can't find the files from trash or hidden files with the file manager (because they doesn't exist) the only hope is use file recovery software (free) or service (cost too much to even think) and data recovery is possible only if the file was saved correctly before accidentally deleted/modified and not overwritten.

OK, strike my last post.  I've done as you suggested but there are no relevant docs amongst the hidden files.

Maybe you have make it hidden (dot before filename). Try open file explorer, go to desktop folder and press Ctrl+H to toggle view hidden files.
I won't let an old, but fully functional computer die just because some company tell me that they won't make no more security updates to their OS. Thanks Linux :)

I'm using LL 2.4 on this old computer and I've just spent a couple of hours typing some word documents in Libre Office, saving each doc to a folder I created on my desktop. I continued typing on a fresh page and suddenly all the text of my previous pages disappeared. I did not delete anything and did not consciously hit any "weird" keys. I seem to have lost one saved doc and all but one line of the doc I'm currently working on.

I don't have a trash icon on my desktop and can't even find the folder to check it. Does anyone have an idea what I might have done wrong?

Thanks
