Excellent! I think that package may be missing now that I see the package name. I was looking for missing components, but was unsure of its name. I will take a look the next time I go work on that machine. Will also look into the menu option as well.....thanks again.

The package is called "software-properties-gtk" -- maybe it's missing for some reason.

Look for it with this command:
Code: [Select]
dpkg -l | grep software-properties-gtk

If missing, install it:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install software-properties-gtk

You can have it show up in the Menu by itself (without having to open Synaptic) as follows:
-- Right-click Menu button on panel
-- Choose "Edit Applications"
-- Pick "Settings" category on left pane
-- Scroll down to "Software & Updates" and put a check mark in the box
-- Now it will appear under Settings category of Menu for easy access.

P.s.  You may want to check in Menu -> Settings -> Session & Startup -> Application Autostart (tab) and make sure there is no auto-update daemon (possibly included w/ Ubuntu Software Center) started on boot.

Interesting....every linux lite machine I have built does automatic updates every couple days or so. It updates various software, kernel, security updates, etc.

In fact.....I just built a fresh LL 2.2 laptop and made no changes to the system other than the typical Install Updates with a fresh install. Then in Synaptic Package Manager.....I clicked on Settings and Repositories.....which brings up Software & Updates. The third tab over is Updates and sets the automatic updates function for LL.

This is what is missing on the radio station computer, but is on every other LL install I have done......

Thanks for the link and info.....

I did not realize that Ubuntu Software Center actually would break things, as I have installed it on quite a few machines and had no issues with it at all. Unfortunately, as mentioned in the other post, the Synaptic Package Manager is definitely not as user friendly as the Software Center options for finding new software.....and a lot of the machines were built for new linux users who need an easy solution for finding software.

I did do the install updates on all machines......however on this particular computer, I still have no place to set how, when the machine does its automatic updates. In this case, the auto updates appear to actually freeze up the Rivendell radio station software and need to be turned off completely, so the user can launch them manually during maintenance.

Hi,

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but TTBOMK there are no "Automatic Updates" applied in LL
You need initiate "Install Updates" that checks for any possible updates,
If there are any, you then need to respond to the "Do you want to continue? [Y/n]"

Regarding using "Ubuntu Software Centre"
There is another Thread on the Forum(which alludes me) about the subject of "other" Software install tools.

Hello,

I recently installed LL 2.0 on a local low power radio station computer for their automation software. I have used LL 2.0 on a number of other computers with no issues, but this computer seems to be missing the "Software Sources" window. It should be available from both Synaptic Package Manager under repositories and Ubuntu Software Center, which i installed. In Ubuntu Software Center, the Software Sources is greyed out.....while in Synaptic, the repositories link is there but no tabs for controlling the auto updates.

This all started when the auto updates were causing issues with the radio automation software and I needed to turn the updates off to avoid conflicts. My other LL 2.0 installs have the Software Sources working just fine, so this machine baffles me.

Any idea how to get or reinstall the software sources so they work correctly???

Thanks
