This problem came back, but I installed lightdm-gtk-greeter, and this one works well.
There are reports on the internet, that the lightdm-webkit-greeter gives black screens on some hardware.

Just wanted to say that I don't have anymore this problem (for now), after few days, like it "fixed itself". I didn't install any updates or changed any settings.

I actually get the following error:
init: ureadahead main process (240) terminated with status 5

I will have a look into the link when i get back from walking the dog.

Might post this in Terminal :

inxi -Gxx

& see what graphic card that you have  on computer .

This is the outcome of it:
Graphics:  Card: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] RV710/M92 [Mobility Radeon HD 4530/4570/545v] bus-ID: 01:00.0 chip-ID: 1002:9553
           X.Org: 1.15.1 drivers: ati,radeon (unloaded: fbdev,vesa) Resolution: [email protected]
GLX Renderer: Gallium 0.4 on AMD RV710 GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 10.1.3 Direct Rendering: Yes

I had the same problem today, turned of the computer after running updates and when i turned it on again after a few hours i only saw a black screen. Left it there for over an hour but only saw black screen and mouse pointer. Had to use clonezilla to put back backup and now its running fine again.
Interesting... Do you know which update caused it? I reinstalled my system right when some new updates came out, so that's probably why I didn't have any problems before.

But I don't see anywhere more people reporting this bug...

Did you install the updates again, and it works now? Or you didn't install them?
I dont know what caused the problem. But after putting back the image i ran update again and booted a few times and all still works without a problem.
Only error i get is : ureadahead terminated with status 5

Yeah I know, there aren't any proprietary (if I'm writting it right) drivers for me. I heard they work only on old kernels for X2300. I know, OK, thanks, I'll do that. Anyway, I did MD5 check.

Well you shouldn't need a video driver, I'll have to sleep on this one. You could go for reinstall, I doubt 2.4 is going to make a difference it's practically the same with newer software, settings, tweaks, etc. This time just mount any NTFS partitions on the root file system, eg. /myntfs
