I generally go to the iplayer website - copy the PID from the program I want to download and then paste it into to the PID box at the top.
Works well for me.

Sorry can't seem to get screen shot to work.

Thanks newtusmaximus. Yes, I realise now that what I was trying to explain must have sounded unintelligible, as you use a GUI for get_iplayer.
Therefore I wont go any further with what I was trying to explain, unless you'd like me to ...

I didn't know a GUI for get_iplayer existed, so I always used command line & just assumed everyone else did.

Could you post a screenshot of the GUI (really curious to see what it looks like)?
Do you have a weblink for the GUI?

Really appreciate any help with this - many thanks

64bit OS (32-bit on Samsung netbook) installed in Legacy mode on MBR-formatted SSDs (except pi which uses a micro SDHC card):
2017 - Raspberry pi 3B (4cores) ~ [email protected] - LibreElec, used for upgrading our Samsung TV (excellent for the task)
2012 - Lenovo G580 2689 (2cores; 4threads] ~ [email protected] - LL3.8/Win8.1 dual-boot (LL working smoothly)
2011 - Samsung NP-N145 Plus (1core; 2threads) ~ Intel Atom [email protected] - LL 3.8 32-bit (64-bit too 'laggy')
2008 - Asus X71Q (2cores) ~ Intel [email protected] - LL4.6/Win8.1 dual-boot, LL works fine with kernel 4.15
2007 - Dell Latitude D630 (2cores) ~ Intel [email protected] - LL4.6, works well with kernel 4.4; 4.15 doesn't work

m654321,
don't normally use command line - giplayer GUI.
For command line do you use a special command to normally get added?

UPDATE
Command line  from this morning

So it seems "Added" is functioning ?? on the INFO part at the beginning.
HOWEVER, just quickly scanned the whole listings and entries for this morning (31/10) do NOT have a prefix "added" in the listing.
You can only tell the listing in "new" if it happens to have a date suffix.

Is that the answer you were looking for??

Yes - programs from today 30/10/2017 listed in V 3.06
Are the new programmes (i.e. new since yesterday), prefixed by "Added", on your computer.
I have the TV listing, but without the "Added" list before the main list, that is:
Code: [Select]

However, under "INFO" it says it "added 218 TV programmes to cache". Not sure exactly what this means.
Does it mean these 218 programmes are just added to the main list (the start of which is shown above), even though they have not been prefixed by "Added"
as they were in previous versions of get_iplayer from 3.02-1 and earlier.

Do you get what I'm trying to say, newtusmaximus? Did you have an "Added" list for today's programmes?
If I'm not clear with what I'm trying to say, I'll post such a list to show what it looks like ...

Suggest you read through this  link
I went through the sudo apt get route to install the ppa

Thanks m654321.
https://launchpad.net/~jon-hedgerows/+archive/ubuntu/get-iplayer.  gives details of product development for future reference.
Yes updates automatically.  NOTE , not an "approved" PPA as not in Synaptic.  However so far I do not appear to have had any problems.

Thanks newtusmaximus, for the link. I installed the PPA & ran 3.06. It gave the TV listings.
I'm hoping it will show the "added" (new) TV listings when I run it tomorrow - I'm looking forward to downloading
Attenborough's Blue Planet II - hopefully it'll be available...

Many thanks
Mike

I have installed the Get_iplayer  PPA so am on  Version3.06.   Will do checks this evening when there should be a list of updated programs from today.
Do you get updated to the newest version (automatically or manually) with the get_iplayer PPA installed?
If you do, could you run through with me how I install the PPA.
I think I did it once but have now forgotten...

get_iplayer, version 3.02-1: not showing the new "added" TV programme listings since yesterday (29.10.17) - anyone else got this issue?

Has anyone installed the the most recent get_iplayer version (3.06) to see if this fixes it?

@newtusmaximus
Yes, version 2.94 from the repository won't work - don't bother with it - I don't understand why Ubuntu haven't updated it in their repository. As I mentioned previously, it's already been superceded by 3.01 (which is now also out of date & wont work !) & we're now on to version 3.02-1.

I'm sorry you couldn't get the steps I outlined in reply #8 to work for  3.02 - it's a very good version, e.g. it fetches the TV listings much faster than before, using "concurrent indexing" to do this rather than the more sluggish "sequential indexing" of earlier versions. Also you can download simultaneously more than one TV programme. However, you seem to have found a method that works using the pid, though it does look somewhat more complicated than the usual method.

Since get_iplayer problems & upgrading seems to be a such recurring issue for those of us in the UK (AFAIK get_iplayer won't work outside the UK), I think I'll write instructions (with screenshots to make things clearer) in the member submitted tutorials section. I'll PM you when I've done it, so hopefully things will then be a bit easier for everyone concerned, me included ...

I'll get back to you again soon on this
Cheers
Mike

Hi,  Thanks for your message

V2.94 in Synaptic I can't get to work.  So fully uninstalled - including dependencies etc. Then visited https://launchpad.net/~jon-hedgerows/+archive/ubuntu/get-iplayer to try and get 3.02
This pointed me to GITHUB but could not get it to download.  Me??.
So, although not LL policy – understood valid reasons, added ppa  via command line
Then added GUI Giplayer -v0.52

RESULT – Search  TV  box and download works
BUT using PID  box at top and download throws up error PID not recognised.

The latter used to work flawlessly and allowed for download of programs older than 1 week.

Will now try and get older programs using the command line PID command.
“get-iplayer --pid=xxxxxxxx”

That seems to work.

UPDATE:-
The GiPlayer PID download option worked ! when i tried very early in the morning/ Very Late at night.  No PID error.  So it is possible that this needs to be used when BBC iPlayer server is not very busy.

Also the command line route for getting PID  of older programs still listed on iPlayer seems to give  File sizes are approx 2x as large as they would have been via Search TV.  The  route taken appears to be to record the program as opposed to downloading a pre-prepared mp4  ??

It appears that support for the 3.01 version of get_iplayer stopped on the 18th August 2017. This may explain why the 3.01 package mysteriously disappeared from the Ubuntu repository, sometime between May and August. The latest 3.02 version was published on the 22nd August.

If you want to install the 3.02 version, you will need to first delete any previous version of both get-iplayer and its dependency, atomic parsley.  The default version of atomicparsley (in the Ubuntu repository) is 0.9.2, but you will need a later version for 3.02 to work. You can delete these packages using Synaptic Package Manager (Menu --> System --> Install/Remove Software).

Then, follow these two steps to install and run get_iplayer 3.02.

First step
Download the atomicparsley 0.9.6 dependency from ...
https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=250289

If you are using the LL3 series, you will need the xenial version of atomicparsley - the link is shown under the paragraph beginning with "Linux Mint 18.x wrote..."   Click on the link. The package to download will then appear on your desktop; right click on it, then click "Open with GDebi Package Installer", to install the package.

Second step
Download get_iplayer_3.02 from ...
https://launchpad.net/~jon-hedgerows/+archive/ubuntu/get-iplayer/+packages

Scroll down past "changelog", until you come to "Package files"
Click on get-iplayer_3.02-1-ge2c5943-ppa30c~xenial_all.deb

The package to download will then appear on your desktop; as above use GDebi to install it.

When done, you're now ready to go. Just open the terminal and type get_iplayer after the prompt, to get the BBC TV listings.  To download one or more TV programmes, type get_iplayer -g [programme number].  If you have more than one TV programme to download, leave one character space between each number in the list (don't use commas).

I hope this fix for get_iplayer works for you (as it did me). Ongoing issues with get_iplayer can be frustrating, but it seems there is usually a way around them - at least so far so good - thanks to some clever folk leaving their solutions to Linux issues on the web ...

64bit OS (32-bit on Samsung netbook) installed in Legacy mode on MBR-formatted SSDs (except pi which uses a micro SDHC card):
2017 - Raspberry pi 3B (4cores) ~ [email protected] - LibreElec, used for upgrading our Samsung TV (excellent for the task)
2012 - Lenovo G580 2689 (2cores; 4threads] ~ [email protected] - LL3.8/Win8.1 dual-boot (LL working smoothly)
2011 - Samsung NP-N145 Plus (1core; 2threads) ~ Intel Atom [email protected] - LL 3.8 32-bit (64-bit too 'laggy')
2008 - Asus X71Q (2cores) ~ Intel [email protected] - LL4.6/Win8.1 dual-boot, LL works fine with kernel 4.15
2007 - Dell Latitude D630 (2cores) ~ Intel [email protected] - LL4.6, works well with kernel 4.4; 4.15 doesn't work

@newtusmaximus - could you now mark this thread as solved, since ...

... the up-to-date version of get-iplayer (3.01-ppa30a~xenial) is now available from the Ubuntu repository.
Just go to  Menu --> Install Updates --> Search (type get-iplayer in the Search box).

I just went to the "Install Updates" repository to install get_iplayer v. 3.01 (mentioned in the above quote) but it is not showing, only the 2.94-1 version ...  I don't understand why v3.01 was there in May, but not in September.
