I have firewire slots on a multi card pcmcia card on my IBM T23 and they are hot and supported since the 2.6 kernel in AntiX so I expect the firewire ports to be operational on your gear also.

Code: [Select]
03:00.2 USB controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. USB 2.0 (rev 65) Subsystem: VIA Technologies, Inc. USB 2.0 Kernel driver in use: ehci_hcd 03:00.3 FireWire (IEEE 1394): VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6306/7/8 [Fire II(M)] IEEE 1394 OHCI Controller (rev 80) Kernel driver in use: firewire_ohciExternal Hard Drive should be OK. You might have to pull the card on the camcorder and use a card adapter if the camcorder
is so proprietary that is file system won't show in a file manager in Linux lite.

Like Jerry said. Give it a shot 1st in a live session to see or not.
My cameras, camcorders, all work for me MY WAY in all my Linux installs.
Even my Blackberry Phone.
