You can remove the 4.4.0-89 kernel if you like. I'm not sure if you'll get updates, I would guess no as this kernel is built for Trusty. Let us know if you do, will be interesting.

  • CPU: Intel i5-3230M (4) @ 3.200GHz

  • MEMORY: 16Gb

  • VIDEO CARD: Intel 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics

  • Kernel: 5.x

It booted to a login screen.  Took some tweaking, but I now have both monitors working with the docking station.

I assume it's okay to remove the 4.4.0-89 kernel, and this 3.13.0-126-generic will get kernel updates using Menu->Favorites->Install Updates?  Or do I have to do sudo apt-get install linux-generic?

Code: [Select]
sudo dpkg -i *.deb
should be fine. You can always run:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install -f
if you need to.

Interesting.  I've done the download on the desktop (LL 2.8 64 bit).

The files are in *.deb format.  I suppose I just run each *.deb file on the laptop (LL 3.4 64 bit).  Is there a particular order I need to follow?

Download all the kernel files with apt-get download off that machine re. that kernel version, then install them on your 3.x box. See if that works.

I'm not using it on my laptop right now, but it would be the same as the one on my desktop that is running Linux Lite 2.8 64-bit, and that is 3.13.0-125-generic.

3.13 on LL 2.8 64 bit.  And by the way, I think I did already try to downgrade the kernel on LL 3.4 64 bit to 3.13.  If I didn't, I can try.

What kernel version are you running in 2.x that this works (32bit or 64bit)?

@bitsnpcs ,

Thanks for the tip.  I wish I thought this was a kernel issue.  If Jerry puts out a 4.13 for Linux Lite 3.x, I suppose I can try it.  But as I mentioned, Fedora worked as expected.  Linux Lite 2.x worked as expected.  This feels like an Ubuntu 16.04 LTS problem.  And it's gotten the better of me.

I don't want to abandon Lite for Fedora on this laptop, but I don't really want to go back to the Lite 2.x series either.

Opensuse didn't work.  I didn't figure out how to get a Live USB, and I didn't want to install it either.

I'm getting close to just putting LL 2.8 64 bit back on the laptop.  Feels wrong.

Tried Linux Lite kernel 4.11 and 4.12.  No better.  I'm getting the feeling this is an Ubuntu 16.04 LTS thing.  Whatever they didn't do here, that they did do with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, hopefully they will do with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.

For grins, I'll boot to an OpenSuse Leap 42.3 Live USB.

Just booted up to a Live version of Fedora Workstation 26 and both monitors are recognized using the docking station.  Tried a Live version of Ubuntu 16.04.3 yesterday, but no dice.

Fedora 26 is using 4.11.8-300 as its kernel on the Live USB.  I'd like to think this is just a kernel issue instead of an Ubuntu 16.04 LTS one.  I'll see if LL has 4.11.x and give that a go.  I think I've gone as high as 4.10, and both monitors didn't work with the docking station as they did with the Linux Lite 2.x series.

@firenice03

I've heard nothing from the other forum posts.  I'll just limit my docking station time for now, I guess, and continue to approach this as time permits.  If time gets extended, then I'll abandon the thread.  For now, I want to keep it open.
