Title: Computer Recommendation
Post by: Coastie on July 15, 2014, 07:32:35 PM
I think my computer hard drive died. :'( It had been crashing. Sometimes it said it had overheated. I could shut it down for a while and usually have to unplug it. It did not come back up this last time. I tried reinstalling Linux Lite 2.0 from the DVD but it said there was no space on the  hard drive. I am taking it in to a computer repair shop tomorrow to be checked.

Anyway if it costs too much to fix, what would you recommend to replace it?

From reading http://www.cupoflinux.com/SBB/index.php/topic,538.0.html looks like an AMD would be the best way to go. I do not have the skill to build a computer so a ready made would be necessary. I think $500 or less would be a good price with shipping and/or tax. I would want a DVD drive. Can reuse monitor, etc.

Hello!

I hate to hear that your hard drive died. If it is a SATA drive that failed, or if your computer has internal SATA ports, you can get a 1 TB SATA replacement for $80 or less, and a 2 TB for a little over $100. Hard drives are not too terribly difficult to install, and it's not like you need an OS transferred fro the old drive.

If you're willing to go as high as $500, you can get a nice desktop AND LCD monitor (bundled or separate) for that - usually less WITH Windows 8.1 pre-installed, It's a matter of whether you choose to buy it locally or through someone like Amazon, Newegg, Tiger Direct. etc.

One thing I definitely recommend is that when you get a new PC, create recovery DVDs (you'll need several blank ones), in case something happens if/when you try to add Linux Lite to it. PM me if/when you get a new PC  - so I can advise you on how to make it run better on the Windows side - ESPECIALLY after you add all those Windows updates. Even out-of-the-box, new PCs ship with  hundreds of invalid registry entries in them...

Thanks for the response, Rob. Turns out it was just loose pins in a connector so won't need new computer.
