Thank you but I settled for Lubuntu, apparently it's the only user friendly distro capable of supporting that Acer junk.

Anyway, Linux Lite is a very good Distro, I'll definetely keep an eye on the development.

If I may suggest something to try, it worked on my slow system:

Open VLC
Click on 'Media'
Click on "open Network Stream"
Paste the You-tube address
Press play

Hope it helps

:)

Understood, thamks for you help.

Since that makes the machine unusable (the user really wants to see videos), could you suggest me a distro which could run better on such bad hardware to allow smooth video play?

I already tried lubuntu and it worked fine, except that wifi was totally broken.

Then you are limited by your hardware, sorry.

That command opened a "notepad like" window. I pasted that stuff, saved and rebooted.

Nothing changed.

There is one more thing you can try, but it is not without risk, do a back up first if you need it as you may have to reinstall.

Open a terminal, do:

Code: [Select]
sudo leafpad /etc/X11/xorg.conf
and add this:

Code: [Select]
Section "Device"
            Identifier "Intel Graphics"
            Driver "intel"
            Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
EndSection

save, close and reboot.

It's not a particularly powerful computer. Try this, open a terminal and type in: vlc followed by the youtube link.
eg.
Code: [Select]
vlc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bmj7tHzXFU

Oh, I know, it's a terrible machine...that's the reason why I decided to remove that Windows xp hog.
Before Linux lite I tried lubuntu and it was the only distro that played videos fine, but it simply did not recognized any wifi, so I was forced to use an Ethernet cable.

I did what you suggested and it opened a vlc window with a Linux lite review...unfortunately, the video doesn't play at all, it appears to stay stuck at 00:00 no matter what I press.

Here's the terminal output:
Code: [Select]
VLC media player 2.1.4 Rincewind (revision 2.1.4-0-g2a072be)

So to quote what it says, "You are looking specifically to see if "sse2" is listed?  If it is NOT listed and you only see "sse", then you need to use an older version of the flashplugin." You say it is not listed, therefore you don't need the older flashplugin.

The next step is to run Menu, System, Create System Report and attach it in your next post.

Read through the post from the beginning line by line. Follow the instructions first. You may not need flashplugin-legacy after running the first command in the tutorial.

Valtam, I started from the beginning of Goldfinger's post and ran that grep flags command: it does show sse2. Does it mean that I don't need to use the old flash?

Then I tried this SMplayer and I had the same issue: acceptable video performance, but unbearable and choppy audio.

Thank you guys!

I tried to find Driver Updates, but it only found stuff for the network card, which works perfectly.

Valtan, I looked at the topic you linked...can I just download that deb file and run it (after I delete the old flash, which if I got it right, is described in the first part of Goldfinger's post)?

Firstly, check here: Menu > Settings > Install Drivers to see if there is any driver for the VGA. I think there is a topic somewhere in the forums discussing Flash issues and watching YouTube on low-end machines but I can't find it right now.
