Post by: javier_mina on February 13, 2021, 04:12:46 PM
Hello.  I am using a Dell laptop with Linux 4.8.  The battery icon is present, showing 0% charge and no time indicator.  BIOS indicates "battery charging disabled.   Battery status shown as ok.  Laptop works fine on line power.  Original Dell charger and battery.  Laptop only 3 years old.

Here is the acpi -V result

linuxlite  ~  acpi -V
Battery 0: Charging, 0%, 2417:00:00 until charged
Battery 0: design capacity 2800 mAh, last full capacity 2417 mAh = 86%
Adapter 0: on-line
Thermal 0: ok, 44.0 degrees C
Thermal 0: trip point 0 switches to mode hot at temperature 100.0 degrees C
Thermal 0: trip point 1 switches to mode passive at temperature 92.0 degrees C
Cooling 0: intel_powerclamp no state information available
Cooling 1: Fan 0 of 1
Cooling 2: soc_dts0 no state information available
Cooling 3: Processor 0 of 10
Cooling 4: Processor 0 of 10
Cooling 5: soc_dts1 no state information available
Can anyone help or is my battery simply toast.
Thanks. Javier

'Charge' for 3 hrs, then take the charger out of the pc and see how long it runs on battery before shutting down.

The OS would not interfere but you can try to charge when the laptop is OFF.
Also, if the laptop was plugged in all the time, this seems to accelerate the "death" of a batteries. Never did research on this though. :-S

Thanks Jerry.  Tried your suggestion, but no joy.  I presume that the battery is completely dead.

Strangely enough, I had to change 4 batteries from DELL system last week about the same age...
The batteries in all of them was dead, but also they all were "bloated". (i.e. they were suppused to be flat/slim but looked like they ate chips and chocolates for the lest year ;) )
Kidding aside, this made the laptop split open near the battery compartement and I'm pretty sure it could be a fire hazard.
So, check if you have any "deformation" of your laptop. Is so, remove the battery A.S.A.P.. Replace with an genuine one, not a "compatible/refurbished" from ebay.

Cheers!
