"Laptop Mode Tools" can be used to set your power scheme on a desktop also.

Dookus:
Open Synaptics and use "Battery" as the search string.

There are several programs to save battery power.

"Laptop Mode Tools" is highly recommended.

There is a wealth if information on Ubuntu Forums on this.
