I've updated our Features page with the following information:

Linux Lite is a 'gateway operating system'. It was created to make the transition from Windows to a linux based operating system, as smooth as possible. It does this by providing easy to use familiar software such as Skype, Steam, Kodi and Spotify, a free Office suite, a familiar user interface or DE (Desktop Environment) layout, and most importantly, by continuing to improve on what we already provide by listening to members of the community.
This is a question I get regularly, so now when someone asks you what is Linux Lite, or what is it's purpose, you can get the answer easily :)

One quick question @Jerry , I noticed that it states LL has a 5 year support and correct me if I'm wrong, but to my knowledge Ubuntu derivatives, with a few exceptions, received only 3 years of full support and I believed this included LL. For instance, LL 3.6 would be fully supported untill 2019 since it's based on Ubuntu 16.04, just like LL 2.8 based on Ubuntu 14.04 has reached its end of support, am I wrong?

Don't get me wrong @Jerry I don't mean to be controversial whatsoever, if anything I just try to understand how exactly LTS support works.

Ubuntu LTS main hardware support until 2019 but has maintenance updates, including critical security upgrades until 2021.
Some of the modules you mentioned seem quite "core" and almost all are XFCE. Is this information from Xubuntu?
I'm too noob in Linux to known the planned for XFCE but could go to version 5 maybe in 2019?

@TheDead No, it's not from Xubuntu, it's from LL when running ubuntu-support-status that's what I get, apart from other output but some mentioned packages I installed myself so it's not relevant.
I'm too noob in Linux to known the planned for XFCE but could go to version 5 maybe in 2019?
I don't know but it'd be nice having a 5 XFCE version ;D

It's my understanding, according to what I read that the Ubuntu base packages are fully supported until 2021, but like you mentioned and like the above image shows main hardware support until 2019. I've also read, for example, in this post https://ubuntu-mate.community/t/why-can-t-we-get-5-years-support-for-16-04/5098/12 that Ubuntu derivatives/flavours such as LL with an alternative DE like XFCE has only 3 years support from Ubuntu regarding desktop environment packages. I guess we're good until 2021 on LL, but I still don't fully understand all this and how it exactly works. What happens next after 2019 when main hardware support ends? I guess we'll figure it out when the time comes.

Some Linux based OS' do only get 3 years of support. For example Xubuntu 18.04 will have a 32-bit & a 64-bit release. But what comes as no surprise, with only 3 years of support, we're back to 2021. Linux Mint is also another distro that only has 3 years of support. When they release 18.03 (which will have an XFCE desktop as an option) it will also be a 32-bit, 64-bit release. But with 3 years of support, and just like 'who's on first, what's on second', we're back to 2021. If you were to install Linux Lite series one on your computer (don't do that) and then run a support status you'd find that some parts of LL series one are still in support. Clear as mud, isn't it?

You could try and install 2.x and see how it fairs and updates in the next few months.
That release is already in the "after-hardware" phase at the moment.
1.x has passed it's end-of -life since its based on 12.04.

I hope Linux Lite still aims at keeping older hardware running well. While it's definitely awesome for new users coming from Windows and Mac, a lot of us came to Linux to begin with because Windows or Mac upgrades became too much for our ageing - but perfectly good - hardware. Hence the word Lite in our the name. I came here from Xubuntu because even it was becoming too much of a resource hog on my old 32-bit machine.

Unfortunately there will be no more 32bit LL (other than 3.8). There are enough distros out there that will cater to low end machines. Ok, they won't do it the LL way, but you still have options. That's the beauty of linux.

There's lots of time left on LL 3.x, so no hurry. And I'm also sure it will still be LITE even when 64-bit is all there is. I have been gifted with a sweet 4GB 64-bit machine that is currently running a heavily modified Linux Mint Xfce 18 OS. It may become a Linux Lite machine if and (probably) when Mint Xfce becomes too much for it.
In the meantime I remain a rabid Linux Lite OS fanboy for those 32-bit machines!

@TheDead I did try LL 2.8 before 3.6 because it's based on Ubuntu 14.04 and the fglrx/catalyst proprietary driver for my hd radeon GPU is still supported from AMD, which is not in Ubuntu 16.04, but I got issues with some apps like claws-mail and a few others, so I installed LL 3.6.

@Ottawagrant Xubuntu 18.04 is base on Ubuntu 18.04 coming out next year so, if I now understand how LTS works, it'll be supported until 2023, Mint 18.x series on 16.04 so in theory has the same support as LL and I believed LL 1.0.0 has already reached it's end of life since it's from 2012, am I wrong?

I'm really sorry if someone misunderstood my words. I was simply trying to understand and I think I did, still have some questions unaswered but I'm confident that with some reading I'll find some answers.

I'm really sorry if someone misunderstood my words. I was simply trying to understand and I think I did, still have some questions unaswered but I'm confident that with some reading I'll find some answers. ...

If I don't reply to some threads, it's because I want people to go on a search and discovery journey on their own. This is a good habit to practice because it teaches people not to take what they are told as gospel. I get asked a lot of questions, and what I try to do at the very least is give people a starting point. Research should be done by you, not for you.
