Thanks tomt.

It seems from article Sourcefire bought ClamAV, and then Cisco bought Sourcefire, Sourcefire it says made Snort (Intrusion prevention system) -
"Snort entered InfoWorld's Open Source Hall of Fame as one of the "greatest [pieces of] open source software of all time"

Snort wiki

Would it be Sourcefire do the work on ClamAV ?

Clam from what I have read a little while ago was taken over by some corporate outfit whose name escapes me at the moment and is not considered quite as good as it used to be due to neglected interest in maintenance. Not my opinion, just information I read online.

Cisco own ClamAV  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clam_AntiVirus

"Cisco is the largest networking company in the world."  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cisco_Systems

I have been using sophos for sometime and it does not slow my system down at all. It runs in the background and you can do scans anytime you want. Unlike Clam it actually prevents maleware before it gets into your system. Clam from what I have read a little while ago was taken over by some corporate outfit whose name escapes me at the moment and is not considered quite as good as it used to be due to neglected interest in maintenance. Not my opinion, just information I read online.
Once Sophos is installed if you update it by following the below instructions[/size]open a terminal and type sudo su & enter your passwordthen type /opt/sophos-av/bin/savupdateThis can take a few mins to complete so be patient- after that is completed drop root elevation by typing exitThen do a full scan by typing the below into the terminalsudo savscan -archive -suspicious -pua -remove /

If anyone is interested I will repost the video instructions to install via terminal which I had posted here some time ago. Only takes a few minutes to install and teh you might want to update. Cheers.

Again, great thanks, Jerry. I had almost installed SOPHOS, which I had installed in previous distros.
You guys keep saving me from my own old noggin!  ;D

Been doing some research on Sophos and it's all bad news. They collect data and send it to their servers. It's also not free software so there's no chance of creating a GUI for it. You also need a username and password for it.

@elelme not a problem :)

Update screenshot, I'm really liking the way this is turning out, and, in less than 110 lines of code for the entire program:

I guess it is dumb, on reflection. I don't use a mail program, nor am I on a network. I simply surf and use webmail. No Social Media, either. And no mingling with Microsoft products, anymore. I thought it was a small risk and maybe that is faulty thinking. Thanks for responding, Jerry.

(I am not typical, I know. And I didn't mean for my remarks to mislead anyone else into following my mistakes.)

The ClamAV daemon will run in the background. Folks need to be aware of this. Why would you have an AV if it wasn't protecting your system :)

Jerry, if this allows me to manually scan and not to have it constantly in the background, it is a winner for me.

(I have used SOPHOS and CLAM in other distros and in Linux Lite, and have yet to catch anything. But they were a
drag on speed and RAM, just enough to wish there was some way to turn them on and off manually. YES, I realize
this undermines the programs, but with Linux Lite, and able to reinstall a recent ISO made via Systemback, I have been
surfing "nekkid."  :-[  )

Great idea J.  However I am far from sure on how reliable/up to date clamav is.  Tried it for some time and the updates of the virus /threats library etc were far from frequent.  This is assuming of course I had it set up properly. i.e the GUI.

After a recent episode with android based malware on a family mobile ( discussed elsewhere and assistance given in this forum) I have had to leap into the dark and load/use SOPHOS ( free to home users).  This to ensure that the threats/malware library is constantly refreshed and all incoming is screened in the background.  Does tend to slow response times down but that is the price to pay.  Using it to ensure I do not inadvertently act as a conduit for threats when exchanging files with others not enlightened enough to use LL.
I did not feel, perhaps wrongly, that clamav was sufficiently current to deal with the potential threat I was trying to deal with.  i.e clamav might give a false sense of security?  Me being paranoid??

Perhaps a user friendly front end for SOPHOS?  Could be a winner as they have stopped developing their GUI ;)

Sorry it took so long to get back to you, I've been rather busy. Still tackling this in some spare time. Latest iteration, again, far from complete:

This may end up as a option in Lite Software. I get lots of messages from people about this.
