Title: LL version for my computer???
Post by: This PC on September 24, 2020, 11:02:19 AM
Hi LL community.

I recently re-installed LL v4.8 (downgrading from v5.0 due to system perfomance issues).
This is the best Linux to replace Win7 (though i use both).

I've noticed that LL v4.8 slows down a bit when connected to internet and when i use Atom code editor it consumes too much memory and slows down the system.
For offline use, i can use even v5.0 or above. But I want a suitable version of LL to use with internet according to my system hardware that runs fine.

Code: [Select]
Processor: Intel Pentium Dual Core CPU E5300 @2.60 GHz
Memory: 1 GB RAM (DDR2)
Graphics: Intel G33/G31 Express Chipset Family (Chip type: Intel GMA 3100) (256 MB)

Should I switch to v3.8 or v4.0? (At least v3.8 is still supported and recieve security updates)
My main focus is learning programming with Linux.

Will v3.8 get auto-updated to v5.0 if I use system updates (or any apt-get update commands)? I wouldn't upgrade unless there is any special requirement.

So, what do you think?
And, I forgot to ask what is the minimum requirement for v3.8? I couldn't find about it!

Hello This PC and welcome!
Can’t answer your first question (should you switch from 3.8 to 4.0), I’ll let knowledgeable users do that.
2nd question : there is no upgrade path from Series 3 to Series 4 or 5. So no, it won’t auto-update or auto-upgrade. If you choose to move from 3.8 to Series 4 or 5, you’ll have to reinstall.
As for system requirement for LL3.8 : same as 3.6

Hi,

With 1GB RAM, I would personnaly use 3.8, 32 bits.
Also, for a browser. I would use Palemoon (32 bits) which is base on a Firefox core (but not the new and memory hungry Quantum engine).
They are lower ressourced browsers, but I didn't find them stable enough for me.

Don't open more than one or two web pages at once either. 1GB RAM is quite the bare minimum nowadays.

Actually, I didn't have enough knowledge about computers earlier. If things are like this, I'd upgrade the RAM to 4GB but not other things as some PC building forums says that this motherboard is so outdated and rather than upgrading it, it would be better to get a new modern build.
Thanks guys for your advice.
