Thank you Valtam for stickying it and changing the title, also for your help  :)
The most thanks though for making an awesome Linux distro. I just collected my second issue of Linux Format today, it states next months issue will have an article about the best Distro's of 2014.

Ghosting

http://redobackup.org/

http://sourceforge.net/projects/qt4-fsarchiver/

Internet cli application/browser

http://www.uzbl.org/

Code: [Select]
$ apt-cache policy uzbl
uzbl:
  Installed: 0.0.0~git.20120514-1.1
  Candidate: 0.0.0~git.20120514-1.1
  Version table:
 *** 0.0.0~git.20120514-1.1 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty/universe i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
Flash and java work with no special tweaks. My favorite terminal based browser.

Radio streaming in terminal

http://moc.daper.net/

Code: [Select]
$ apt-cache policy moc
moc:
  Installed: 1:2.5.0~beta1+svn20131120-1
  Candidate: 1:2.5.0~beta1+svn20131120-1
  Version table:
 *** 1:2.5.0~beta1+svn20131120-1 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty/universe i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

also a favorite of mine. Another is https://cmus.github.io/

Code: [Select]
apt-cache policy cmus
cmus:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 2.5.0-4build1
  Version table:
     2.5.0-4build1 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty/universe i386 Packages

A good file manager I also like is

Code: [Select]
harry@harry-Latitude-XT2:~$ apt-cache policy spacefm
spacefm:
  Installed: 0.9.4-1
  Candidate: 0.9.4-1
  Version table:
     0.9.4-1 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty/universe i386 Packages

http://ignorantguru.github.io/spacefm/

I know spacefm is not maintained anymore by ignorant guru but there are some killer plugins (https://github.com/IgnorantGuru/spacefm/wiki/plugins) for burning isos and other things in it. Plus it is a double paned file manager. It does not take up much space and can run alongside Thunar.

Depends on ones tastes I guess.

Would like a focus on easy to use, simple GUI equivalents, no terminal stuff as our target audience are Windows folk :)

The review score was very high for Linux Lite, I know which one I would vote for  ;)
It is out on the 30th September.

You rang? :)

Thanks to bitsnpcs for starting this thread.  As a not-terribly-bright, ex-Windows user, I really appreciate it.

For whatever reason the original title was changed back to "Useful Links'. I have changed it back again to ' Linux Replacements for Windows Programs '.

I had not knowingly altered the title. I am unsure why it happened.
I notice today when I quoted and replied to a message it used the old title of that message on my  reply, as the message I quoted had the old title. I have edited my replies in the thread so that all the reply titles match the main one so it doesn't happen if they are quoted by anyone.
It may need doing to any others in the thread that use the old title so if quoted it uses the correct name.
Knowing this now, I realize as I had 2 windows open when adding the first additional links if that window or the first one had the old title as they had been open a while it may have saved it using that title ?

Ok you have the Libre office lined through in some of those references, (at the beginning of the post) Why? Are they not working in LL?

I think I have used some of them and they seem fine but I will double check to be sure.

Hello ohjrson,
thank you for your help. The Strikethroughs were on the original list, to denote they were part of the LibreOffice Suite.
You are correct they do work in LL.
Based on your post, I have now -
1/ removed the strikethroughs and added in superscript, being the first of these it's #1 , this will be more accurate/and informing, it is also a better way to reference that.
2/ I added in a Reference section for explaining this and any future superscripts.
3/ I gave you credit for your work in the "Removed" section, and clicked Thanks :-)
4/ I gave you credit for your work in the "Reference" section on superscript #1.

Your work helped me to improve the list for us all both now and in the future, and is very much appreciated.

The full Libre office suite is installed by default but is not visible. To see this option you click Menu,Settings, Main menu, then the left had column under XFCE. Choose either Graphics or Office (Depends which category you want to see it in) Put a tick under Libre Draw and close.

Wow, Thanks Such an honor. I am sorry for not reporting back sooner but I did check they all worked fine. Thank you for the credit. I am proud to be a part of the LL forum and community.
I have recently convinced my neighbor down the hall to use LL 2.0 and he really seems to like it. He is also impressed with it (LL 2.0 or Beryl?) So that is great.

Anytime I can help with the improvements or what not please feel free to ask. After all we all benefit right?

I have also just upgraded tonight to LL 2.0 or BeRyl and I am happy so far with its performance. I just have one thing to test and then will be VERY impressed. (so far it seems to be on time) I will let you know more details later.

Thanks again.

Hello ohjrson,
I have put a link to a guide for you in your other thread, it uses a legacy open source driver, available via the link, there can also be another driver/s installed that needs removing for this to work, there are also instructions on removing them.
Some other pages I read were about loss of AP's so reducing/affecting connectivity with this model wifi , it was the additional driver that caused that and the removal solved it, it was added via updates so the method also includes a way to not receive that less favorable driver in future updates, so it would prevent a future problem such as this too.
This may be why the Live usb works well and the update that was installed caused the problem with the wifi to occur due to the driver conflict etc.

I would like to add the following:
Notepad/wordpad: Geany
Video conversion: Handbrake
MP3 tagging: Puddletag

Most Windows apps can be replaced by similar/better ones on Linux.  The only exception I ran into with a generic app (excluding things like Fidelity brokerage app, etc.) is Quicken.  It is the only app for which I maintain a Windows virtual machine as the 2014 version does not work under Wine, and I have tried all the alternatives.

I installed it via the Synaptic package manager. The link is to the main page.

gLabels is a program for making up labels and business cards.
You can make and add your custom QRCode to your labels or cards with what ever information you wish embedded into that, such as website url, email address, phone numbers etc.
It can also do cd and dvd labels.

Another addition for AutoCAD replacement should be FreeCAD (http://freecadweb.org/)

Also, I would like to suggest that where there are several Windows apps with identical list of replacement apps, they should be combined into a single line to reduce the length of the list (e.g. MS Access / dBase, uTorrent / Azureus, etc.).

Hello riser,
it strays from the concept of the title "Linux Replacements for Windows Programs", I didn't choose the title, I was less concise in my choice (as I often am lol).
So I would not be able to make the decision to change the title myself, you would need to ask Jerry.

I use qbittorrent but I've no idea how it compares with other ones, I used to use utorrent.

For a blocklist I use this script
Code: [Select]
   #!/bin/bash

    ##remove & backup old list
    rm -f blocklst.p2p.old
    mv blocklst.p2p blocklst.p2p.old

    ## Get the lists

    wget http://list.iblocklist.com/?list=bt_level1 -O l1-z
    wget http://list.iblocklist.com/?list=bt_spyware -O spy-z
    wget http://list.iblocklist.com/?list=bt_ads -O ads-z
    wget http://list.iblocklist.com/?list=bt_templist -O bp-z
    wget http://list.iblocklist.com/?list=bt_hijacked -O hijack-z
    wget http://list.iblocklist.com/?list=bt_dshield -O hack-z
    wget http://list.iblocklist.com/?list=ijfqtofzixtwayqovmxn -O threat-z

    ## Merge the lists

    cat l1-z spy-z ads-z bp-z hijack-z hack-z threat-z > blocklst.p2p.gz

    ## Decompress

    gunzip blocklst.p2p.gz

    ## Clean individual list files

    rm -f *-z

I've no idea if it's a good list and any ideas to improve it will be very gratefully received my friends.

Well I am not part of the staff but, since the topic is "Linux Replacements for Windows Programs" and not "Open source Replacements for Windows Programs", I would mark it with a footnote stating it contains proprietary components. That way everyone can have the freedom to make up their own mind as to whether or not they wish to use it.  :)

Since the originator of this thread seems to have moved on, and the list has now been incorporated into the Help Manual, I'm not sure if this is still open for further suggestions.

But if it is, I would just suggest adding Clementine (as Misko did very early in this thread) to the list of music-player alternatives to Windows Media Player and Winamp.  I believe it is derived from Amarok (which is listed, and which I have not tried).  But I find Clementine the most user-friendly and satisfying of all the music organisers and players I have seen.

One interesting feature is that it is also available for Windows.  Since I still use Windows for some purposes - and find Windows Media Player very tedious - I now use Clementine in both Windows and Linux OSs.  Double benefit, and no need to adapt to different GUIs.

Waaah!  Don't expect me to edit code that determines what someone else's post looks like...... I wouldn't know where to start, and I'd be bound to mess it all up.

Much wiser for me to leave it to others with the skills (and motivation) to add more software programs - like Clementine - to the list in the OP and eventually to the Help Manual.  But the suggestion is on the table (so to speak).

Is there any Linux lite software with which pdf files could be edited, for example pdf forms which could be filled in windows adobe reader (forms that are made in a way that they could be filled (not changed) and printed)? And how to install software in Linux os, is it only done through terminal or it could be done in other way?

Install Xournal.  You can use it to annotate PDF files.  You can find it in Menu > System > Install/Remove Software.  After it's installed, open your PDF using Xournal and you can annotate it that way.

My printer is down.  So I've used Xournal to fill, sign, and date PDFs and I email/fax them back to the senders.

I haven't posted on here in a long time sorry for that. I just wanted to say that, with my older hardware config Linux Lite is and has been the best choice. Rock-solid and dependable. I have tried other Distros and I find none as good as this one. A thousand thumbs up!  :D

Thankful for this information. I installed it the same evening, and I installed some additional software from the list (important is that I did not try this option before, now I know it is available, for additional software installation). I did not have time to try it but I will. I am an accountant, and for commercial purposes, I will need Windows on other computer, because  of accounting software demands. I will be using Linux OS for personal use

Hello,

I have added a new alternative to the list today, 'EasyTAG'.
I installed it via the Synaptic package manager. The link is to the main page.

I have been using this for just over a month now and it has worked out as a good replacement.

I like using Audio Tag Tool.
Basic and easy to use.
sudo apt-get install tagtool

There was one program that I use on Windows which is obscure, unique, and not updated in 14 years.  So I thought "no way is there a Unix equivalent".   Well, I was wrong !

The program is YAC - Yet Another Callerid program (ironic title for the only one of its kind).

But it inspired a unix program NCID - Network CallerID which has servers and clients for a variety of platforms, and even has a "gateway" to connect with a YAC server on a windows machine.

Also, I was amazed to not see a clipboard manager in the list

Here is what makeuseof says about this:

"What is a Clipboard Manager and Why Should I Use One?

Clipboard Managers are tools that run in the background of your system and keep a history of the content that you have saved to your clipboard. This means that never again will you accidentally overwrite content in your clipboard and never again will you lose something you just copied by closing an application.

They are great tools because you no longer have to worry about overwriting the content in the clipboard, or losing it by closing an app. Perhaps, like me, you use a clipboard manager while programming or writing. I rely quite a lot on the ability to copy many things in succession and to then use the history to quickly select the content I want at any given time. If you’ve never tried a clipboard manager, then you owe it to yourself to try one out."

Here is one for XFCE:

I can't find any new development notes on this beyond 2014 for anything other than the apk. Not sure if this is even available anymore except for android and as a cloud service. A lot of it may have been based on apache maven project source code so perhaps it has been discontinued because of licensing issues. I can't even locate the source code or the developers as their web site links are dead except for old discussion dating from 2013.

Office Suites & Applications

Windows Application       Linux Alternatives
Microsoft Office (suite)       LibreOffice (http://www.libreoffice.org/), OpenOffice.org (http://www.openoffice.org/), KOffice (http://www.kde.org/applications/office/), siag office (http://siag.nu/), Calligra (https://www.calligra.org/),

---> ONLYOFFICE (https://www.onlyoffice.com/ru/)

It's safe, light, easy-to-use, minimalistic but full-featured, and absolutely free for Linux. The software is Russian and the official web-site is, of course, in Russian. Use Chromium-browser to translate the page and understand what is what.

You can download DEB, RPM, and SNAP packages here (https://www.onlyoffice.com/ru/download-desktop.aspx).

Enjoy!  :)

Just take the 'ru' out of the URL for English.

No need to apologize NN, taking out the ru without adding en works fine in Firefox.

I wasn't sure how to get it to display in the thread so put the link.

Really? Then how did you manage to paste pics in your earlier posts (e.g. here (https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/coding/uk-thunderball-killa-open-source-donation-builder/msg41127/#msg41127))?

When reading online posts here and elsewhere online, I've often wondered if it's more satisfying to let someone know if you're going to block them or to just do it anyway without the announcement.

I've appreciated contributions from both of you and hope the hard feelings can subside at some point.  I like the updates to this list.  I'm sure they will benefit me and others who decide to become Linux Lite-ers.

CCleaner (https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner) ---> Ubuntu Tweak, Ubuntu Cleaner (an abridged version of Ubuntu Tweak), BleachBit (sudo apt install bleachbit)

Ubuntu Tweak:

http://archive.getdeb.net/ubuntu/pool/apps/u/ubuntu-tweak/ubuntu-tweak_0.8.7-1~getdeb2~xenial_all.deb

Ubuntu Cleaner:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gerardpuig/ppa && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install ubuntu-cleaner -y

AusLogics BoostSpeed, Glary Utilities, Advanced SystemCare ... and other similar system optimizers ---> Stacer (https://github.com/oguzhaninan/Stacer/)

Together with Lite Tweaks, Stacer, Ubuntu Tweak/Ubuntu Cleaner and BleachBit your Linux will always remain clean and optimized. Enjoy!

That is an awesome list, and thought I'd contribute to it:

Microsoft office - Softmaker Office (paid, but powerful)
PDF viewer - qpdfview
Mailer - Claws Mail

Sorry if this is considered necroposting :D

Regarding FreeCAD (2D drafting)  I would also
suggest   LibreCAD (3D modeling), perhaps this
would be a much better choice for some people.

If you're in to using old DOS games/apps - eg: retro stuff... Dosbox is a good one to install

Great resource bitsnpcs. Here is another Linux alternative to Microsoft you might be interested in adding to your list.

Creately - http://creately.com/ (http://creately.com/)

Creately is also a graphic editor for Linux that is a great alternative to Microsoft Visio. Creately has everything you need for graphic editing with an extensive shape library, image search and a wide selection of diagram models.

PDF Studio
https://www.qoppa.com/pdfstudio/

Fantastic scanning / PDF program for linux.

Full suite like Adobe Acrobat (not the reader).

There really is no competition to it just yet.
