I guess it's the convenience of having some thing that "should" work
especially if you are new to using VM's

If I've ruined my current testing vbox image, don't have a backup, and need to get back testing ASAP, downloading a ready made image would be a timesaver.

You probably know this anyway....
When I create a new VM, and it's all configured/set-up an working and "clean"
I create one "Snapshot" in the VM
If I break it, I remove that one "Snapshot" and I'm back to my original "clean" VM
