For what do people use LL

Got rid of Windows 10 on both of my machines. I have a Media PC, which I have connected to my TV. I use it for Kodi, and web browsing, chatting, Skype, and email.

I also have a desktop PC and I use it for gaming. Steam works great on Linux Lite and, suprisingly, installing proprietary Nvidia driver 352 was a snap so games run really well. So, on my desktop I game with Steam, retrogame with Nestopia, chat on Kageshi, email, skype, and other basic web stuff. I'm hoping that GOG.com gets it together and makes their Galaxy Game interface compatible with linux soon.

I also have a friend who chats with me on Kageshi. He has an old laptop with 2gb of ram and he was running Windows Vista. I used Linux Lite 2.6 and he loves it. I showed him a few things using Teamviewer and now he can chat with no choppiness or lag at all.

I use LL on my laptop as my main system . Got a teclast x98 pro tablet which runs windows 10 and android in dual boot. The tablet is mainly used when i got too much physical problems and i am unable to get behind the desk, for the rest i use the laptop.

I've been using LL on my main desktop computer for a little over three years now. This current system is fairly capable with an AMD A10-6800K, SSD and 8GB RAM. I installed LL because it works great and I liked using it on an older desktop. When it was time for a hardware upgrade I didn't hesitate to do a fresh install with LL2.0. I'm not a novice with Linux and have done some customizing but love the stable and ready to use base LL provides. I use it for browsing, photo management, music, videos, etc. I sometimes do business projects on it, such as business cards, forms design, sale flyers, spreadsheets, quotations, line card designs, etc. I prefer doing more and more on LL and have less and less interest to work in MS Windows.

I also have LL dual booting with SolydX on my old HP-G60 laptop. Linux with the XFCE desktop breathed new life into it. That computer goes on trips with me and gets used in hotels, coffee shops and libraries for personal and business uses.

I've had good success replacing XP, Win7 and Win8 on friends and families computers with LL. They are all happy and using their systems for typical home uses.

You are correct, "officially" no more updates for WinXP...
However WindowsXP Embedded is Supported to 2019
and the fixes can be applied to regular WinXP..
But you are on your own if you have problems.

Running Windows in VM you still need to take "all" Windows security measures,
no matter what you read.
It is still vulnerable to all the same Windows exploits...

Just to add to Wirezfree.... Microsoft no longer supports XP - So no patches.. AV software is migrating away...
A VM is like any other physical PC, on the internet the same rules apply... a Windows VM on LX or OSX is just as susceptible to a virus or the alike as any Windows systems.. Being out of service increases.. If its on a segregated network with no access to the internet less risk...
How much risk you're willing to accept, is up to you...

I recently replaced Win 10 with LL - Let's see how it goes.

My machine, although modest, is new hardware. I tend to lean towards "Lite" systems more because I dislike superfluous features. I'm not massively obsessed with resource usage as long it's managed correctly.

I don't mind getting my hands dirty from time to time but to be honest these days my PC is primarily a media consumption device: Movies; Music; Gaming. You get the idea.

To create a "Lite XP" you can use "nLite"
Basically you copy your entire WinXP install disk to a folder on your PC
Run nLite, and you can select & build and extremely compact XP
It allows you to do all the config during the nLite session, remove components, drivers etc...
Then create an install ISO.
I managed years ago to get a "real bare bones" install down to about 195MB
Here's a link to a "184MB XP" , it used to be a challenge/game, how small could you go.

Running LL on 2 physical PC's - Windows left them behind, LL breathed new life into them..
The 1st system is used day to day email, web, youtube, Office etc. Its at the homework desk, so its used by the entire family.
The 2nd the mini isn't used as much daily as the other it runs VirtualBox (FreeNAS test) but I mainly use to spill into work, especially if away from the house - VPN, RDP and what have you..

Both systems do have Win7 installed but haven't been booted to in months (and that was for updates).
Additionally the desktop has an old HP LJ 1000 installed to , again breathing life back in, which is shared on the network as well as google print for mobile devices.
Still new with Linux but of 3 PC's, 1 is Windows running other VM's on it..

Re XP "image", is it possible to cut down XP to a "Lite" version so that it is less demanding on a VM and hence viable on a  less powerful lap top laready running LL2.6?  I too have a few programs, such as gps updater, that need to run on windows and do not function on WINE.

You could always create an "exact" image of your XP install and run it in Virtualbox.
That's how I finally retired my XP Box. I fire up the XP VM now only for 2 programs, MS Visio & AceMoney.
