Title: What was your first Linux Distro ?
Post by: bernard stafford on July 08, 2019, 08:46:48 AM
My first Linux Distro was Ubuntu 7.04 [Feisty Fawn] 04/2007.
After that it was 7.10 [Gusty Gibbon] 10/2007 when it first came out.
I have been a Linux enthusiast ever since.

My first was Knoppix but I have no idea which version. That was back in 2013. I ran it from a live cd that was in a library book about Linux. My first install was Kubuntu, off a library cd as well so no idea which version. Kubuntu convinced me to really try out replacing Windows 7 with Linux and as you said, i've been a Linux enthusiast ever since.

I proceeded to distro hop for a few months and eventually installed Linux Light 1.0.6, to an HP laptop, right after it was released. Been using Lite on at least one of my systems since.

I have not had the pleasure of using Knoppix or Kubuntu Distros.
You went to Linux Lite 1.0.6 that is  impressive. That shows dedication towards this distro.
The first Linux Lite for me was 2.2  64 bit, which I still have the CD I burned.
Then as your reply distro hopping for me. Some of which were different servers mostly.

My first Linüx distro to ever give a try was one of the mainline GNOME elegant Ubuntu and I disliked it, remaining with my Windows Vista at the time, instead. I was long hesitating then, after some years taken to reconsider, to eventually switch from Windows 10 - which I liked by the way and have nothing bad to say about, but having checked at least a handful of other Linüx distributions, I found hardly any of them really matching my taste. I thought that I would go UbuntuMATE, but eventually someone somewhere listed Linux Lite in a thread regarding lightweight Linux distributions. Once I saw it and tried it, it was an immediate *it*. Since then, I did not even attempt to seriously consider switching to any other distro, but like I said, if Jerry says beat it one day, I would probably go something Debian based.

Puppy linux on a USB stick for browsing and secure online banking.   Serious work, tried Linux Mint from time to time, never comfortable with it.  It was only when I heard about LL that I really jumped in and ditched MS.  5 years ago !
It was this forum that gave me the confidence to never look back :) For which thanks.!!

I tried others, but the first distro I used as my daily driver for more than 60 days straight was LINUX LITE.  Been using it since.  I started with Linux Lite 2.2 or 2.4.

Mandriva in a VM cause we going to be using RHEL 5 at work...
Hopped around, Mint was probably semi most then found LL, since 2.2, which has been the only to be dedicated/installed!!

Sick of the slow-downs and interruptions of Windows XP, I didn't even know there was anything else but Apple!  Put off by the price of it, I looked online for an alternative and found Linux.  A "distro chooser" pointed me to Ubuntu (9.04) and it worked okay, but it was ugly.  So I tried different flavors and fell in love very quickly with Xubuntu

When PulseAudio got pushed on users and caused all kindsa problems, I hopped for awhile, and found several that I really liked:  PCLinuxOS, Linux Mint, then SalixOS (very different, Slackware-based but simplified "for Lazy Slackers©") and it ran faster than anything I have used since.  But it's still complicated and scary for a technophobic Ba'aku boy, so I kept hopping and ended up back on Xubuntu for the next ear and a half before I heard about Linux Lite, which I thought might bring an old hand-me-down computer back to life for a friend, and still be easy enough for a total newbie.  I have had LL on at least one computer ever since.  My others are Salix and MX-Linux.

It an honor to have The 'Linux Lite Creator' On this forum . This Distro is very unique.
Thank You for all of your extremely hard work and devoted dedication developing Linux Lite. We appreciate you.
:)   @Jerry    :)   Together we are LINUX.    Alone we have an OS named Linux.

It isn't just Jerry all by himself, though.  He leads a team that has created this beautiful masterpiece and model of simplicity.  I think it's only right that we acknowledge their contributions and extend our gratitude to them as well.

It is the philosophy behind LL that is the key.- Linux newbie oriented.  Oh, I do wish it had been based on Debian though; we might still have a 32bit LL into the future :(
Jerry, re you "being humble".  As one that has absolutely no idea what goes on under the bonnet of LL- it is us poor mortals who should be humble!! :)  Kiwi power!

Nix and IBM mainframe at work around 1986 through 1994. My first Linux at home was a boxed cd set with manuals of Suse around 1998, 99. My first Linux Lite was 2.6.

My Windows XP had a virus and I took it to Staples to have them clean it. The guy who did it asked if I'd ever heard of Linux. Nope. He said to check Distrowatch.com. I did and then I went to the library and found Mepis. I started with it and then went to PCLinuxOS. Then tried Ubuntu and settled in on Mint for a bit. I kept trying other distros then found Lite.

Thx Jerry and the crew
I still check out other distros but they wind up getting compared to LL. Thanks for the simplicity and the care y'all put into it. LL it is.

Jerry is the 'creator of Linux Lite  Which is the most difficult part of everything especially creating an operating system.
After that huge task having the dedication and expertise to be the lead developer and the team of developers that
accomplish the end result of maintaining security updates, Bug fixes and other software problems.
To develop a 'stable OS is a huge accomplishment. The greater accomplishment is keeping the OS 'Stable.

My first Linux was Xandros Linux on an EeePC 701 4G. That was also my first computer. Still running today.  ;)

My first linux distro was ubuntu 14.04 or 16.04, but it was too easy to use (no options to do my basic jobs like setting up encryption, modifying panels without terminal. Just aplications). I also noticed that it was unstable, but now I know that it felt unstable just because I ran it on broken computer. Linux lite is more complex. Easy to use but I can't for an example show almost anything (GUI) in one screenshot.

Mine was also Ubuntu (12.04) but I couldn't get the graphic card to work properly.  I saw a good review about LL2.2 and made the switch.  I had a Win7/LL dual-boot setup for a while 'till I made a mistake and deleted Windows while re-sizing partitions.  I don't miss it.

I think the first distro I installed on bare metal must have being Mint Debian edition, around 2014.

I had installed Ubuntu on Virtualbox before that, and I also have used Gparted live-cd way before that.

The only thing I regret now, is that I waitet all the way until windows XP EOL before seriously switched to Linux. Wish I had done that before.

Why in particular?
