Hello!

Again, Welcome to Linux Lite.

You install Lubuntu, then you need Thunar (or to patch PCManFM to allow root access), add Pulse Audio to properly handle Bluetooth, then add a few more essentials, All of a sudden, Lubuntu also becomes slow. I reserve it - well stripped, of course - for the slowest machines. Haven't tried 'stripping' LL yet; that's a future project...

Lite 2.2 is a LOT faster than Lubuntu 14.04 on my 7 years old computer

I usually direct people with REALLY old machines to LXLE. It's a pretty solid LXDE based distro with a great selection of software.

Hello!

LL2 is a LOT faster on this old soldier than the 1.08 it replaced. I just might try 2.0 on some of the other old stuff around here...

Hello!

(Compaq Evo N600c) has a P3M-1066 CPU, 512MB RAM

Last of the P3's were a better CPU than the P4's were for some time!

Hello!

The machine I'm on now (Compaq Evo N600c) has a P3M-1066 CPU, 512MB RAM, and LL 1.08 for now. I want to try 2.0 on it, and will keep that if performance doesn't take a huge hit, as Lubuntu doesn't seem to want to 'play nice' with the Bluetooth adapter (no Pulse audio, I guess).

With 1.08, as long as you don't try to do too much at once, you're OK...

Dookus,

Nice to hear LL works well on old test laptop.

Just out of my own curiousity, would you mind posting the specs of the laptop?  I like using the inxi terminal program to give good overall snapshot of specs.  If you don't already have it installed, do following and just paste output of last command back to forum.

To install it (in LL version 2.0):
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install inxi

To have it list specs of computer:
Code: [Select]
inxi -Fxz
Try Linux Beginner Search Engine for answers to Linux questions.

I take back my previous statement, Lubuntu may boot faster (considerably) on older hardware, but that's where any benefit ends! ... Lubuntu is sluggish, LL2 on the old laptop I have been trialling light weight Linux distros on is the fastest once at the GUI, and the most attractive, best supported and least problematic than anything this old thing has had running on it, Crunch Bang used the least resources, but was even slower to respond than Lubuntu ... every LLx release it has had on it has shone ... and I tried a plethora of flavours!, there are some flaky woeful offerings out there sadly!

I would not recommend any LXDE distro for a new person coming from Windows XP for a few reasons, but one primarily is LXPanel. Its a pain in the rear to add items, and God forbid you remove something. I am not a noob in any sense of the word, and even I have had bouts with LXPanel that I could not resolve. XFCE is the way to go for a nice stable panel with ease of use that even a new user coming from XP will have no problem with.

Yup ... Lubuntu is basic, it is fast though, I do use it over LL on the slowest laptop here, I much prefer Linux Lite, LL is better used on at least later model Core Solo or faster with at least a gig ram in my experience

Hello!

There was a time when *I* used to think that, too. Lubuntu brought me an experience that was the most uniform over a wide variety of installation environments. EVERYTHING seemed to work EVERYWHERE. I miss the configurability of Openbox Configuration Manager and the look of the Clearlooks 3.4 theme. Might try playing around with Openbox on LL.

Lubuntu was nice while it lasted, but upgrading every six months WAS a *REAL* DRAG, LL DOES run FASTER than a comparable Lubuntu system, and I SURE don't miss Abiword, Gnumeric, Osmo, and the Chromium browser!

That particular reviewer must not be aware of the fact that after 14.04, Lubuntu faces an uncertain future, at best. This is the WORST possible time for anyone to push people that way. They'd just be changing to something else again, and sooner than later...

Well said Teddy5090! The only word I could think of for Lubuntu was boring.

Yes! Agreed. Very boring and plain.

I've sent a tip to review Linux Lite to the main editor and writer of OMG! Ubuntu!. Hopefully he will respond to my request to review Linux Lite, but considering he didn't respond whatsoever to my last one of a application review, I doubt it. Who knows.

As far as Lubuntu is concerned, it is definitely not as feature packed as Linux Lite, but it is lighter than Linux Lite, but that is really the only advantage to Lubuntu. Linux Lite provides the best balance between usability and lightness, while Lubuntu is too light, and too unusable out of the box. That is really all I have to say.

One more thing: I agree that these authors are not aware of Linux Lite, but even so, it is their opinion on the subject. Also, take a look at the quote you posted. "Lubuntu might be the best Linux distro for Windows XP users". Technically, the quote specifically says that Lubuntu Might be the best. Never said it was the absolute best. Just something to point out.

EDIT: The main editor of OMG! Ubuntu! did respond back to me about Linux Lite. See the "Good News from OMG! Ubuntu!" thread for more details in the "Suggestions and Feedback" Section of the forum.
