Title: Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) Officially Released
Post by: N4RPS on April 21, 2014, 03:22:08 AM
Hello, All!

Well, on Thursday, April 17th, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr was formally released by Canonical, the people behind the Ubuntu family of Linux distributions. In addition to a new Ubuntu, a new Kubuntu (KDE), Lubuntu (LXDE), and Xubuntu (XFCE) were all released. For the first time, ALL are LTS releases. This means 5-year support for all - in other words, at least through April 2019.

With this latest Ubuntu version being released, it also means that LL 2.0 should also be released within a few months. One need not upgrade LL just because a new version comes out; a lot of people still use 1.0.6 despite 1.0.8 being available, and the current version of LL will continue to be supported for the next three years. Besides, until an upgrade path is developed (which generally makes a mess of things anyway), a 'clean install' is needed to install newer versions - IOW, a LOT of work reinstalling everything - ESPECIALLY if you've REALLY 'tricked things out'!

I've been busy with other matters lately. Therefore, I've downloaded the ISOs of interest to me, but haven't used any of them yet. If any of YOU *HAVE*, what do YOU think about them???

Thanks for writing this Rob! I have Ubuntu 14.04 LTS already running on my Secure Boot Windows 8 Travel Laptop. I didn't even have to turn off Secure Boot to boot and install it, thankfully. It runs and dual-boots with no problems. As I usually do, I downloaded the Ubuntu 14.04 LTS ISOs already and saved them to my external 1 TB Hard Drive (both 32-bit and 64-bit). I still have plenty of space to burn, still have barely half of it filled.

Linux Lite 2.0 will be released around the May / June time-frame. I don't know what features are planned for that release, other than a new base and kernel.

Sounds like a good recommendation, I was thinking of upgrading my system from 12.04 to 14.04 but wasn't completely sure, I am happy to use my current distro at the mo so I might stick it out.
