Title: Other Distro
Post by: CSNLinux on February 23, 2018, 07:53:19 PM
Like I mentioned earlier, I'm really thinking about Installing Linux on my desktop.
Because this is a way more powerful machine than my laptop, which has LL3.8 Running.
I've been looking around here and there, but I'm having trouble to see a clear path in the Linux Jungle.

one of my co-workers mentioned KDE-Neon. So I tested a live version this afternoon, looks nice but my feeling didn't really jump for joy on this one.

At the moment I've got a live version of Ubuntu Gnome running. And this feels good.
But I'm anything but an expert as it comes to Linux.

Therefore my question is what should you consider to be a good distro on a
(from the top of my head)
4 GB RAM
2.9 Ghz QCore
350 GB HDD
64 Bit
System which in currently running running on Windows 10 ( Ieuw, now I have to wash my hands again for typing dirty words) ;D

To answer the first question
Desktop is used for Music, Photo editing, Mail, Downloading, Some gaming

I have stronger specs than this and I still run Linux Lite.

I use Linux Lite 3.2 64 Bit on the desktop

This is not a Support question. I would also like the Op to consider if this kind of question is respectful in this community. If you would like to enquire about Manjaro for example, then it would be better to ask on their Forums if their OS is suitable for your hardware. I wouldn't send an email to Supermarket X and ask them to recommend me cheaper stores. Food for thought.

You're absolutely right. I had some questions also before posting.

But instead of making forum accounts for a couple of Distro sites and to wait to get answer and compare them all with each other after that, I chose to put my question in a very must alive forum I know in an off-topic section

So that's the reason for posting and if the moderators don't want this here, they are free to move or remove this Topic

Time for an addition to forum rules? "This forum is for discussion and support of Linux Lite only!"
Also IMHO, I don't think jokes and films form part of that discussion either,  they are a distraction and there are lots of specific sites for those topics. Others may disagree and I accept their opinions, Iv'e just given you mine. No flame wars expected or accepted!  ;)

Other distros can and have been discussed. You just have to be respectful when choosing to discuss them. My Supermarket analogy is a sufficient example.

You made a good answer to you questions in this ^
This forum is very active and not waiting long for replies. This matches well to the very active development of Linux Lite as a distro.

If you are successfully using LL on your laptop, the question is what are you  hoping to achieve from another distro that you are not already getting from LL? If it is "Bling" then so be it.  However, I suggest having to "learn" to use another distro for little extra benefit seems a waste of effort.  My desktop is more "powerful" than my lappies, but continuity, function and reliability of the OS for me is more important. For me an OS is a means to an end, not the end in itself.

Usually when I wanna go swimming. I just jump in. I don't ask about the water. I am a team member on other distros.  Just run Linux Lite. It is what I do.

You will be pleasantly surprised.   Trust me on this. Or not.  Up to you. Just like it is up to me.  Be a member all the way today.

You can dual boot, run off usb or sd card. Playtime can be done all kinds of ways with some imagination. My intro to this forum for example.

But then . I have never been accused of being shy.  Good luck with what ever you decide to do.

Since this was placed in Off Topic, I felt it was okay.  The forum describes Off Topic as:
"General discussion not necessarily relating to Linux Lite.  Not a Support section."

It was originally in a Support section, I moved it to here.

Thank You.

To close this case, I'll wait for LL 4.0 to be released and try ( and later install possibly) on my desktop
That gives me time to save my precious files for later use on LL.

Thanks all for your meaning and learning points on this matter.
