First thing first.  It's great that he is off windoze.  I use LM on my desktop and LL on laptop.  They are both good distro.  They are easy to navigate. IMHO, LM has more "dressings" (fancier background, etc).  IMHO, don't push away from linux.
As long as he is happy, great.

@ sysdrum
I'm not sure of his reasons?, he did like me in the beginning jump around distro's
He's a hardcore Win User Win 7, he's self taught programmer, started with Delphi and even does Android stuff now.
He's written what I think a pretty good whole home monitoring/control system, that controls everything.

He's was in Broadcasting, AV/Studios etc, but now retired
I think he just was on Mint, decided to try his hand at Lazarus, and just stuck with it.
All I picked up was he has 2 script that run at start-up, and they run some things he created in Lazarus.
He configured Thunar without any menu's and Icons, and he just has them looking like they do at start-up.
He did install some Win progs in Wine.

Did your friend give a reason for disregarding Linux Lite?
What did your friend state beyond Lazarus(IDE) as being a reason to use Mint?

Running a XP theme I see.  I guess he is using portable applications like for winamp and lots of other things. Hence the program and utilities folders holding the portable applications. Sticking to his Windows mindset.

Nothing upgradeable though (static apps). Cool if you like that sort of thing I guess. Though I am just guessing and could be way off base on everything I am saying.

 Nice job there wirezfree.

Here is my Mint Laptop running a XP theme. You'll notice the "Show Desktop" icon on taskbar (covered in a black square outline) is a Windows looking folder.
The drawer next to it is my quick launch.

Introduced a friend to Linux Lite, he's a "Hardcore Windows User", He decided to go with Linux Mint.

He's created a couple of programs in Lazarus(?) and some scripts with Thunar to create this Desktop
It remembers things and positions and a bunch of other stuff, to clever for me, it looks like this:
