Am I missing summat?
On xfce I right click on the desktop select "Desktop Settings" and brightness contrast are adjustable at the bottom of the window.

I have had problems with the brightness on my laptop. I found this:http://www.geekssharingspace.org/2013/11/brightness-indicator-adjust-your.html
and it just works perfectly with LL 2.2  :)
