Title: Does flatpak increases ram usage?
Post by: aquasp on June 08, 2020, 10:59:58 AM
Well, I was going to install flatpak, but I really don't know if it creates a background service that will use more ram and cpu. Anyone know about it? Thanks!

Aquasp, I was wondering about SNAPS, and APPIMAGES as well. Thanks in advance.

@elelme well, about appimage, I am pretty sure that it does not use any backgourd service. Snapd still running all the time I guess, but its not relevant. The only thing sad about snaps for me is that you can't disable automatic updates, just change the time. And about flatpak I have really no clue, but I would guess that yes,it has a background service, but I will wait some confirmation.

Also, I would recommend you to see this benchmark:

Thanks for the benchmark page, aquasp...
Will digest this when I have time, but it seems that it answers my questions.
I wanted nothing to do with SNAPS, and messed up my install trying to remove anything snap-related
through Synaptic...and took out too much, losing my volume and who knows what else.
Result : I just reinstalled the complete 5.0.
Didn't take that long, but I learned a lesson I won't forget...don't take things out unless you are sure,
and even then, don't.  LOL

Some Ubuntu-based distros have refused to use snaps at all, for all kindsa reasons. But beginning in Ubuntu 20.04 snaps are the default rather than just an option as in Linux Lite.

Yes,  it seems Ubuntu is forcing the issue.
But maybe I am misreading this.
I'd rather appimages than snaps or flatpaks, anyway.
But I find I am definitely in the minority.

Our target audience would think a flatpak is a cardboard box that you build yourself. Snaps and Flatpaks don't belong in our OS. If linux folk want to add them later, go for it.

Flatpacks take up more disk space and use more download bandwidth to install. For RAM, not that I noticed so far.
For Snaps, I used to have it in LL 4.8. I think I installed about 3 apps from Snapd/Snap/SnapCraft. What I didn't like about Snaps is that it created an additional folder in my system. I want my filing system to be lean and minimal. The snap folder was an eyesore for me. Lol.

I downloaded WPS 2016 and SweetHome3D via snapd in LL 4.8. But when I upgraded to LL5.0, I threw these programs out of the window and just install these apps via Terminal (without snaps).
