Title: Wi-Fi keeps disconnecting
Post by: TheRoboticM on May 31, 2020, 08:50:55 AM
So, I am pretty new to the OS and when I started using it, I encountered problems with the connection and slowly the problems started growing worse. Now, I cannot connect to the internet.

When I faced this problem, I simply rebooted the PC and it seemed to kept working. But now, even rebooting the system isn't solving the problem.

The problem is that when I boot up the PC, it automatically disconnects the network and when I try to reconnect, it doesn't let me connect. I know that the network adapter is working but it is still not connecting to the network.

Please help me with this issue.
Thanks.

If you have hotspot on your cellular phone try that first. Second, if you have ethernet available, that works best  because ethernet is more secure and realible than wifi.

Nice idea from Jesse to try on a cellular HotSpot.
I have seen more than once a Wi-Fi router or card getting "tired" (i.e. internal components showing age).
For example, I do charity work and D-Link routers of a certain age are trashed since always problematic.

You could also try borrowing a compatible USB Wi-Fi adapter.
I say "compatible" since I had a bunch of adapter over the years, on different OSes, that were not always up to par.

TheDead,
Thanks for the compliment! I appreciate it!  ;)  As for a  better solution, this should be made as an aside by @Jerry somehow. He should make an announcement that if you have wifi issues with Linux Lite 5.0 you should try to use Ethernet or Hotspot. I do not know how many topics I have read about people all having the same wifi issue. Wifi is always sketchy which is why I personally use ethernet. It just is better. Just an idea for @Jerry. Again though thanks for the warm reception to my advice!

@TheRoboticM there are good suggestions in the thread
Additional information may be beneficial in troubleshooting, make/model the Wireless NIC, Driver - internal/USB etc etc...
If you haven't yet - a piece in the manual   https://www.linuxliteos.com/manual/network.html#wireless (https://www.linuxliteos.com/manual/network.html#wireless)

Some commands to run and post the output for each seperatly
Code: [Select]
uname -a

inxi -n

sudo lshw -C network

sudo lsusb

sudo lspci

rfkill list all

ping -c5 8.8.8.8

Really sorry for the late reply...
I was fed up with my computer so mch that I let it rot for almost a month. Almost magically, my 7-year-old computer came back to life normally with no issues. The network issue was solved and it is working normally. I am confused as to why it was not working earlier.

If you have hotspot on your cellular phone try that first. Second, if you have ethernet available, that works best  because ethernet is more secure and realible than wifi.
I had tried using cellular hotspot (when the network issue was there) but it still did not work. And as my router is far away from my computer (my computer is a large beast), I cannot connect it with ethernet...

My computer has just fixed itself magically. Any idea how?

Thanks a lot everyone for your suggestions.

Unicorn dust?

or, maybe some updates fixed some problems...
or2, some hardware is flaky and currently working until it does not. Use it while it works. ;)

Ok so I started using my computer once again and this problem again started frustrating me. Once again, I tried hotspot but no success. Then I ran the commands firenice03 gave and have attached the output.

I am once again asking for your technical support.

Thanks!

I added your output to the tread as code tags for easier reading....

Atheros :(   I too have one in my laptop - its stable (no disconnects) but speed fluctuates.... Mine is a little different

Somethings to try

Set your Wi-Fi to WPA2-PSK (if not)

Or look for a USB adapter - Realtek chip or a Panda :)

Yes, WPA3-PSK is a good idea.
Also, an update to the router maybe?

Again, if you have an old D-Link router, change it. ;)
... erm, what is your router exactly?

I am writing this on my laptop...
It is again alive and running normally... But the previous times it worked, the connection was alive for some time and then it was disconnected.
So I have full faith that I will be disconnected in a few minutes.

First of all, thanks for adding the code tags.

My Wi-Fi connection settings on the laptop are set to WPA2-PSK.
The problem with using a Wi-Fi USB adapter is that my old laptop has only 2 USB ports and one of them is for the keyboard and the other is for the mouse as the in-built touch pad is dead. I also do not have the Wi-Fi adapter.

I think you meant WPA2-PSK and not WPA3-PSK as that is not an option.

As for the router, it was given with my Wi-Fi setup and belongs to my ISP. So, I don't know what model it is or which company it belongs to. But most probably it is not that old as I got the new Wi-Fi setup few months ago.

Thanks!

It looks like you're running Kernel 4.4 and 32bit, which normally should configure automatically, but your PCI card is listed at 64bit, so you may have to manually set all of it. See the link below:       Otherwise you may want to run a 64bit OS.

Yeah, sorry WPA2, that was a typo.
Indeed, if the rooter is newer it has less chances to be the culprit, if you have a chance though, check the back or under for a P,N or Model#.
But, I also though of something, if could be that the Wi-Fi antenna is loose and randomly disconnect (?)... but this would show in the Wi-Fi signal strengh.
Also, it would be some bad luck that this happaned when you changed OS... but still.

Another, other thing ;) : Try using 2.4GHz and not 5GHz, it usually has better signal. But slower though...

So, after further investigation, now I am assured that the problem is not with the OS, it is with my crappy computer, specifically with the network card. The network card is really horrible and disconnects anytime anywhere. So, I will have to use a USB network adapter somehow to work with this computer.
So, I guess the problem is fixed now...

Thank you all for the suggestions!

Working with old cards can be a gamble.
A quick web search lists the model to 2010, I may be even older.
It seemed to work fine on Ubuntu 14.04, Kernal 3.x
Since 16.04 kernel 4.x, they are mention of some problems, maybe that have not been completely fixed since then.
Maybe it worked better in some kernels... or maybe the card is just old and flaky.

Still, nice to know you found the source of the issue. ;)  We'll see you in the forums! \( " )/

Well, I don't think the kernel is the issue because before installing Linux Lite, there was Windows 7 installed on the computer (Windows 7 was pre-installed). This problem also came when Windows 7 was installed. After some time, the computer was constantly being bombarded with Blue Screens of Death and we decided to shift to Linux. So, the card is just old and flaky.
